I've read around about that. But this is a 100% legit iPad, bought new from Apple a month ago, no shenanigans whatsoever. And that makes it even harder to find a fix for! I might just call them tomorrow....so frustrating!
It's not about your iPad, it's your computer. Jail breaking software you've installed in the past such as tiny umbrella or anything else alters your hosts file which blocks iTunes from reaching Apple's servers.

Does Safari have the Android feature where if you load up a webpage that is very wide, it will automatically condense the text to the width of your screen, making reading easy so you have to move left and right to finish reading a line?

as a test, I know it was working on my Android phone on this site earlier:

For the first time in a couple years now... Dropped Atomic web browser like a bad habit. WOW Safari is lightning quick on iPad 2. Switching between tabs there is no noticeable lag whatsoever between jumping to a new page and being able to input clicks or scroll. I'm sure it's partly placebo but it just loads pages super fast and has very little delay between switching into app/tab and recognizing inputs.

I'm still using Atomic on the 4S because I think the safari "tab" system is a little clunky in comparison, but I do recognize why it might be preferred on a phone.

The page reads perfectly on ios5 iPhone.

yeah when you finish loading the webpage. On the right in the address bar, there's a "Reader" button, press that and it'll fix the font and align all the text to the width of the screen. Only tried this in portrait mode i'm not sure about landscape.

Guys! I STILL can't update my iPad 2. A few days ago I was getting the "ipad cannot be restored 3194" error, and figured I was in the same boat as everyone else. But now it seems like everyone gets the update just fine, but I still get hit with that error over and over....
halp?

It seems 3000 level errors are network related, itunes trying to hit the update server. Reset router/modem, turn off firewalls, if on a PC check your hosts file (look up the error in google and you will find some discussions on it), possibly even virus related - anything that will cause problems with your communication with the update servers.

Seriously! Haven't done a single illegit thing, even so much as an app relating to iTunes or the iPad.

I did the iTunes diagnostic check, and even that says the network-related stuff is good to go....I might go reset the router though, that's one thing I haven't tried.

Are you on Windows?

Go to windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and open it with notepad. If you're on a mac open terminal and type in open /etc/hosts and tell me what you see.

No. It's by design. I don't particularly like it, but it is what it is.

Edit: Looks like your jailbroken anyway so I'm sure theres something you can do on cydis

Thanks. That's what I figured but couldn't find an official answer documented.

I'm on windows.... I PM'd you the contents of that file! I dont know why I feel weird posting it in the thread, but meh. There is only one apple related address that I saw though.

Fuck me. Im just updating my 3GS to iOS 5. So far ive tried 4 times, and every single time ive had a backup error. The annoying thing is all the codes are different.

This is fucked up. Apple needs some more quality control.

Yeah, neojubei managed to clear up the same error by turning is windows firewall off, IIRC.

That's probably it. There shouldn't be any I don't think.

When is the last time you backed up?

About an hour before hand

Before you ever tried updating? And when you sync, are you syncing all your contacts with something like Address Book or Windows contacts?

I'm just thinking it might be easier if you can just cancel the backup and do a restore/update as a new phone. Then resync it after to bring your contacts and music back in. iTunes should remember your purchase history, as far as apps and music goes. It's a little less ideal and sucks because you have to take the time to resync everything back, but in some ways it's better because it 'restores' your phone and helps you start clean with iOS 5.

But you only want to do that if you have an up to date sync/backup. Also if you have game progress in some of your apps I guess you might not want to do it either.

Yeah that back up was done while downloading the update. Contacts are done though Gmail.

Ive jsut clicked continue and will restore from that previous back up.

But ive had similar issues updating my iPad. Hopefully the new update methods are a lot better.

EDIT: aaaand its fucking frozen. Just apple start up logo on the phone. Fuck this shit, 18 months, 7 betas, and they cant even get the update procedure right.

Were you able to play audio from the YouTube app in the background before iOS5? I've never noticed the feature before.
Damn that's awesome. No idea they added that. Too bad you have to manually press play to resume the stream when you exit the app.

You can also play audio in the background from safari (e.g, an mp3). Didn't notice that before either, but I don't know if it is new.

I don't see a iTunes topic and this one seems pretty relevant and active so I'll ask here. I wanted to catch up on the Walking Dead so I bought the HD version for like fifteen bucks last night. Every single episode is almost 2 gigs though! How is that even possible? Is it just the way iTunes formats its stuff?
It's 50 minutes of high quality HD video (720p). Is ~2 gigs really excessive? I'm asking, I don't really know. Seems normal to me.

How do you remove photos from Photostream?
You can't. You have to delete them from your Camera Roll on your phone *before* they sync to Photostream.

It's pretty dumb.

Man, data usage on my wife's iPhone has gone weird. She got a message about using 60% of her data at the beginning of yesterday, then got a message today about how she went over. I thought that was crazy so I looked at the history and she has a data thing for 70mb at 12:00 AM! When she's asleep! Some people on the net with a similar problem seem to theorize large data things are aggregates, but that's insane, and she's always on wifi when she's home. And if it's an aggregate it should be only from the last time data was "charged." Well, that means from 7PM till 12 she used 70mb? While on wifi? And she went to sleep like usual at like 9:30/10?

We switched her to a 200 mb plan a few months ago and now it's been a problem keeping her under, which is crazy because for the year and a half beforehand she averaged like 80mb per month and at MOST had 170 (when we went on a week vacation). Called up ATT to see what in the world was going on and at first they said she should close her multitasked apps because they can pull data (is this even true? Even though she's on wifi?). I responded that she had an iPhone 3G until yesterday afternoon, so there was no multitasking. They credited me, but I'm really worried/angry. I don't mean to get all conspiracy theory on ATT, but that's just really suspect to me.

Holds your photos for 30 days or 1000 photos, whichever comes first.

iCloud manages your Photo Stream efficiently so you don’t run out of storage space on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you have Photo Stream enabled on your iOS device, every single photo you take appears in a special Photo Stream album that holds your last 1000 photos. You can’t edit or delete photos from your Photo Stream. If you want to touch up a photo or keep a favorite shot permanently, simply save it to your Camera Roll. iCloud stores new photos for 30 days, so you have plenty of time to connect your iOS device to Wi-Fi and make sure you always have your most recent shots handy.

I set up the App store to only do updates and downloads through wifi.. for this very reason. I've only used about 1.4MB through 3G so far.

You can wipe the entire Photostream by going to icloud.com and clicking on the advanced settings. But there doesn't appear to be a way to delete single photos. The whole PhotoStream thing seems more designed as a personal way to access your photos on all of your devices, rather than a social photo sharing service.

The only thing I can think of is that she had auto-downloading turned on for apps, and you bought an app on your phone, and it downloaded on hers, but I think auto-downloading over 3G is limited to <20MB so I still can't get the math.

I mean my bill is due on the 14th. That's what I want. I want to see when my freaking bill is due. And I want it to remind me to pay the bill at some point before that, maybe a day or two ahead. That's how Todo works, and that's what makes sense for paying bills.
Yeah you've confused me too!
In Reminders you can set that your bill is due on the 14th and then you can set up an alert to remind you on any date, be that 1, 2, 5 or however many days beforehand. You can then also set for the alert to repeat, daily if necessary, so you'd get a new alert every day up until the due date.
Is this not exactly what you're asking for...?

Is that the automatic download thing? That wasn't even an option on her iPhone 3G. Is there another option to disable app downloads and stuff altogether unless on wifi?

We use different apple IDs. And I don't think her 3G even had the automatic download feature in the OS. I turned that on for her now with her new 4S she got yesterday. And yeah, downloading apps on 3G is limited to less than 20MB. I don't see how she got 70MB AT ALL. There's literally no explanation I can come up with. Nothing should be auto sending that many MB worth of data at all, and she hasn't used the thing any heavier than usual.

If you start a reminder on your phone you can't set a due date. You can only set a reminder date. Due date isn't there at all. I can force it there by starting the reminder on ical, but that's weird. And the repeating doesn't repeat the alert. It repeats the due date, which is alright, I suppose, but with the due date it won't show up in your notification center like a reminder would if you had a time set. So, say I do what I want and set it up on ical with a due date of the 14th and set to remind me on the 12th to pay it. Well I'll get the alert on the 12th, but it seems to me like then if I don't pay it the 12th, I'm not going to be reminded or anything anymore, AND it won't show up in notification center. It's still on the reminder app, but it won't show in NC, which is weird.

That's my problem, really. The features I want are there, kind of, but they're really buggy and/or just not working correctly.

So this may be a rudimentary question, but how the hell do I synch my camera roll to my computer? (without iCloud)

in iTunes I had selected sync photos with a folder I called 'iPhone.' But nothing is transferring over.

Is this on a PC? If so you'll need the iCloud Control Panel. Here you go.

Wait, so this is happening on both your iPad and phone? Those would be different backups too. It would seem you could isolate the problem to your iTunes or computer.

You don't need to use the iCloud control panel. Are you on a Mac or PC?

Your computer should recognize your iPhone as a camera. So just use whatever software you would normally use to transfer photos. Picassa, iPhoto, Flickr should all work.

You sir, are a GENIUS. Worked like a charm after I snipped that line out of the text file. And thanks to Giga too! Mac-Gaf comes though yet again.

Love iOS 5. iCould backing up/syncing purchases is cool and the notification center is awsome.

But does anyone have this problem? On my iPad 1 64gb wifi when I try to play a game about 97% of the time it crashes before it even gets to the main menu. (if it gets to the main menu it usualy works tho.)

This has happened in Cut the Rope, Angry Birds Seasons, and Slice it. Slice it, which is universal works fine on my iPod Touch 4 32gb. Do you think its just the apps needing to be optimized for iOS 5 or something?(even tho Slice it already has a iOS 5 update...) I don't have many iPad games but I tried one other, Super 8-bit Santa and it worked fine with no problems.

Do yall think its my iPad? Safari also crashes if I have a heavy page on it. It never did that before. iTunes also crashes sometimes since the iOS update(but not the app store) I downloaded the GM the day before while I updated my iPod officially through iTunes but I don't think that would be a problem.

Its like the update cut the iPad's ram in half or something lol.

Just thought I'd say: I've been having issues getting home sharing and wireless sync to work ever since all the updates last week and getting an iPhone 4S. I previously had a 3GS, along with an iMac, iPad, and Apple TV and they all spoke fine. I was at my wits end trying to get everything to work now, nothing was working with each other despite everything being on the same network. Well, I finally decided to turn off and on my router just for the hell of it and in an instant, everything was talking to each other and working perfectly.

So, just a PSA, go ahead and try cycling your router if you were having issues like me.

This may have been covered before, but if I'm on a large/shared Wi-Fi network (college), am I pretty much screwed in terms of the Wi-Fi sync?

I believe iTunes just syncs photos from your computer to your phone. It won't do it the other way around.

So no way to have it done automatically with iTunes.

Maybe? Can your device and computer see each other? For instance does AirPlay or iTunes home sharing work? If those work it should be no problem. Wifi syncing I can confirm works in many configurations without a hitch. Multiple machines all running iTunes on the same network does not bother it, and you can even have multiple copies of iTunes running on separate accounts at the same time syncing multiple devices. So I'd give it a try anyway, no harm in that*.

*at least I don't think there is.

Couple (hopefully) quick questions:

In iOS, if you do a Google search or find a place via the Maps app (or another app that supports it), is there a button that says "navigate" or something that will bring up a turn-by-turn GPS app? Android did this very well and would be a feature I miss.

Also, if you try to perform an action that can be done with one or more apps, does iOS ask you which app you want to use? I can think of an example, again with directions, where I click on an address in the Android Browser, and a dialog box pops up asking which app I want to use to view the address, and it was unlimited. It gave me the option of "Browser", "Google Maps", or "Waze", which are three apps I had that could navigate OR display addresses. Just wondering if iOS can do this.

My last question is about file systems. Is it true that I'll have zero access to my phone's file system? So that means I'm completely unable to use an iPhone as a USB thumb drive, correct? I'm assuming there are also no apps on the App Store that allow you to have access to this either, right? Just wanting to make sure there is NO WAY I can drag and drop files from my computer to my phone without iTunes.

iCloud is still fucked for my wife and I.

My me.com emails have stopped pushing, but Gmail and Hotmail push fine.

We can't seem to validate wife's iCloud account for soem reason. Validation email never sends.

Yeah so I absolutely cannot get iCloud backup to work on my iPad. It works great on my iPhone 4 but for some reason it just refuses to do anything with and only gives me error messages when I try to use it with my ipad

Just updated from a jailbroken 4.3.3 iPhone and it couldn't have been easier! The worst part was waiting three hours to download the update. I didn't realize I could have just downloaded the IPSW from another source until it was too late, but oh well. What's kind of funny is that the update freed up some space on my phone! Everything is just as it was before on my phone, but whereas I had .35GB of free space before hand I now have 3.5GB. Nice. It's pretty swell, so far.

Does anyone sync with iCloud? Seems pointless when you can just plug it into your computer. It's good for your contacts and calendars, really good, but a full back up seems like excessive bandwidth for no huge benefit.

*sigh*

The way iCloud is set up and works is confusing the hell out of me especially when my wife and I share the same itunes account.

Ok, first things first. 5GB of storage to backup. Why are you only allowed to seemingly backup camer roll, documents and apps but not music? Is it because you can access your music purchase history through itunes?
Because for iTunes purchases you have access to your purchase history and for everything else there iTunes Match.
