Hey, once Apple figures out how to put touch feedback/programmable texture into their screens, you'll be glad they went with the fancy leather interface.

There is nothing that making it an app that would prevent these things from happening. Quick access as possible? You still have to click on Newstand and then click on your magazine. How is that any faster than clicking on your App, and then click on your magazine? It's the same number of clicks. You can show the newest magazine by updating the icon of the app. It's not like Apple doesn't have icons that update with info. An app doesn't prevent or limit this functionality.
 
Fricken wow, phone has just WIPED all the birthdays I had saved on my phone. If I restore to before when this happened, subsequent texts will be deleted right?

iTunes has no knowledge of jailbroken apps so they're ignored in a backup and a restore. You don't need to worry about them at all. Now if you want to jailbreak in the future and restore that, you'll need to either find an app that backs up your jailbroken apps, or simply write down a note in notepad of what things you've installed so you can manually reinstall them again to get them back to the state you were at.

update to itunes 10.5 do a back up of your ios device and then just do a regular update i think.

Right now i can't even down load the ipsw file from Apple what's a source to just download the retail file?

argh this is pissing me off, do I have to do a whole restore before I can upgrade to iOS5? It's not even like my devices are jailbroken

Just find a link to the GM that's being hosted everywhere. It's the same exact file. The beta thread has the link posted a few times.

On a different note, has anyone figured out how to clear out the notification that I have a new item in the Newstand?

Easiest jailbreak ever.

and you know what makes it not so bad as a thetherd JB? if you have to reboot and aren't in a position to run the thether app, the phone just boots without JB features. In other words, the phone is perfectly usable, assuming you aren't relying on jailbreaking for activation or something.

I'm as happy as a clam. Bring on Siri! :)

Thanks. Finally though, will this process delete all progress I've made in games, and default all settings in various apps, etc?

If you do a backup first, it'll save all your game saves and settings.

Help! I don't have any contacts! They're on my computer and I they're there in my messages but not actually in the contacts section. I click the refresh button and nothing is there. :((((( !

Turned it off/on and they're there. Phew!

What did you use to jailbreak it? I was waiting for an untethered jailbreak but now that I know it will still boot and function without needing to run the tether app I think I am just going to go ahead and do it right now.

I'm going to wait until the weekend before doing this, as two of my friends have had problems upgrading to iOS 5, on account of everybody trying to do so at once.

Err.. I'm sorry, but name me 1 app that can change it's icon? I've never seen it, and doesn't exist.

Also, yes it takes the same number of clicks, but it's psychological. Opening the new-stand doesn't throw you out of the homescreen, which the bookstore does. You can tap, glance the covers, and tap anywhere else to close. Quicker than pressing the home button again. Yes, small difference, but its still there. They made a call, and in my opinion it was a logical one, and I can see their reasons. You may disagree and have other priorities, but that doesn't mean they made the 'wrong' choice, or a mistake. They believed it was the best way for the majority of people- same as their philosophy for everything else. I would tend to agree in this case.
 
great, my ipad got fucked during the update and now it only errors out even if I try to factory reset. It only occasionally lets me try to download the iOS 5 update that takes 4 hours to download, and has failed the last two times I've let it finish.

what a clusterfuck
 
iTunes is really slow at restoring the iPhone apps from the backup after the updated. For a minute, I thought the phone was done and all my apps were gone, but then I remembered you can now use your phone while it's still syncing.

So for those folks freaking out thinking all your apps are gone, just be patient! It's slow, but it's working.

Fine if we want to talk about psychological, I'm willing to bet more people associate magazines to be similar to books so having a similar interface makes more sense than making it different. Heck they even gave both Newstand and iBooks a shelf that looks similar to each other. I don't think the masses would be so confused if it acted similar to iBooks because they've been trained to know how that works and what it looks like and in real life, people associate magazines in a similar fashion to books. It's much more jarring to wonder why your Books app can go into a folder but your Newstand which looks like an app, can't. Apple hasn't trained someone to think that a folder looks like the Newstand icon or the fact that a folder can look different. So if we're talking about psychological, it makes much more sense to make them simiilar instead of a significantly different experience.

Safari seems very responsive, faster, and less laggy then the previous Verizon iOS 4.2.10! I'm loving iOS 5! Thanks Apple! And RIP Steve Jobs :(

After you create the reminder, you need to click on it and it will have an option for Remind Me.
 
any other trusted mirros than the one on front page? it's slow as hell. and my itunes dl has already timed out twice ~200mb in so forget that.
 
Is iOS 5 out in the UK? Just connected my 3GS and it's prompting me to download 4.3.5 (I'm on 4.3.1 currently as I got a new phone and left the iPhone on pay as you go, so I haven't used it in a while until now. Do I need to update to 4.3.5 before it'll prompt me to update to iOS 5?
 
Anybody had an issue where iOS 5 fails on installing and your device is stuck on the "plug me into itunes screen" but itunes doesn't recognize it. Windows 7 64 bit chimes when i plug it in and I can see the apple usb drive show up under usb devices in device manager.

OG ipad with itunes 10.5 on PC

-reinstalled itunes
-tried firmware update mode
-tried restore mode
-tried more ports
-tried disabling 3rd party security software

only thing i havent tried is plugging it into a mac which if that is what is supposed to fix it as some have reported is fucking stupid.

Update your iTunes first.

Mine was stuck on it. I restarted my computer and it fixed the problem.
