Ok how do I get yt app off there, I thought music was always there.

Media apps take over that area when in use, maybe try opening YouTube, closing the video and then checking again.

You realize you can turn off notifications by app, right? You don't have to let EVERY app post something to the lock screen. Just go to Settings/Notifications/(whatever app)/and turn off "View in lock screen." It's not that hard.
Even without notifications, the lockscreen GUI has always been somewhat intrusive and allowing even one application to show messages will worsen that substantially. Maybe it doesn't particularly matter to you but it's a big problem for me.

If the background picture is so important to you, turn it off?

right but if the problem is a 10 now and 5 with no notifications, you could at least take it down to a 7 by not having three separate twitter apps contacting you. ;)

Heh, I imagine that's just because Engadget wanted to show off the functionality quickly rather than an actual use photo.

Also, gotta say, pinch to home screen on iPad 2 is amazing. That, and swipe up for multitasking, and the Home Button is barely used actually.

I wonder why all the new Alert Tones available for purchase suck. Who thought it would be a great idea to have all the Alert Tones be longer than 2 seconds? All the best Tones that my friends have on their non-Apple phones are quick snippets of sounds such as the coin noise from Mario, a sniper rifle firing, and the Xbox Achievement unlock noise. "Say hello to my little friend" and "I AM YOUR FATHER" just don't cut it as viable Alert Tones for me.

I haven't tried it yet on my iPad, but I'm disappointed there is no swiping up for multitasking on iPhone. That sounds great. :(

well, my upgrade went less than ideal.

the actual backup, upgrade, firmware stuff went fine. Then when the phone came back it said restoring backup. It finished, I pulled my phone off (btw, that new background sync is a blessing AND a curse), and found (after running through the phone setup) I was "missing" a ton of apps and all of my media.. then the phone backed itself up AGAIN..

after hours and hours of fucking around, I was finally able to get an older backup working.. fortunately it seems my saves weren't totally lost, although... it doesn't have my Jetpack Joyride save from 2pm yesterday, but it does have it from earlier in the day, even though my backup was 10pm. likewise my last text it had was 3pm, but again a 10pm backup.

whatever though.. don't care. my biggest concerns by far were my sketchbook app (all of my pics are there), my gymnastics meet tracker (for my daughter), the vast majority of my texts, and recently Jetpack Joyride seems to just not have my progress from yesterday on it.

fwiw, ios5 runs on my 3gs about the same as ios4.. still can't wait to upgrade to my 4s, but at least it doesn't completely destroy my 3gs like ios4 destroyed my wife's 3G.

You should be able to cut your own texttones from whatever you want just like you can for the phone ringtones.

Wait, I didn't mention the best thing! Swipe four fingers sideways to go between opened apps.

Better hope you have an iPad 2. It's such shit, the site still offers no indication it isn't available for the original model like it does for, say, Airplay mirroring.

You can now create your own from the same files they created theirs. Just convert to .m4a and rename to .m4r and you're good to go.

Does anyone know how to set up my Mail cloud address up on iphone? And can that same address be used as my Apple ID?
When you first boot up it runs through the setup. It'll ask you to enter your existing ID if you have one, or create a new one if you don't. Did for me after upgrading my 3GS last night anyway.

There really was never a need for the Home buton on a tablet. It's so much better. I'm kinda hoping iPad 3 does away with the Home button entirely.

TBH the iOS5 upgrade stuff is relatively easy. The hard part is fighting iTunes every step of the way to not nuke every single piece of content on my phone. So far it's been about 50/50. Saved my apps, but not the order. Saved my music, but notes are gone. The iPad install was smoother, I guess, but all it really did was delete everything but the basic sync data (mail settings, etc.)

I look forward to cutting the tether of desktop syncing forever, simply because iTunes is a perfectly functional media manager, but a horrible, horrible way to manage backups. You simply cannot lose your Windows install for any reason. I don't look forward to having to ask Apple to reset my authorization allowance next year when I run out of auths because a hard drive failed.

(Also, bonus points for how iTunes refuses to handle the Camera Roll! Useless.)

...that being said, iOS5 is great. Twitter integration works well. Love the split keyboard modes. Feels just very...polished, at least on my iPad2.

Anyway to have a customized vibration set only when the phone is in sleep?

I don't want it to have it vibrating while the messages or iMessages are being sent, and I'm already viewing it on the screen

Not sure if it's possible? Or was it always vibrating no matter what? I can't even remember how it was before lol

ok when i went to install ios 5 on my iphone 4 it errored out. I restored it and got it to install but now i cant connect to my carrier. This happen to anyone else? what should i do?

Can someone in the UK please do me a huge favour and check your baseband?

Settings -> General -> About -> Modem Firmware (near the bottom)

Mine says 04.11.08, but I don't know if that's what it should be. Either way if I enable 3G internet my connection still dies, just trying to eliminate things. Thank you!

05.16.05 (3GS on O2).

heh, you ALWAYS see this post after a major firmware update. I won't even say if the life is or isn't worse (who knows?) but I swear... like clockwork. ;)

Mine seems unchanged, although obviously the battery was really hammered after install because I had to reinstall a ton of apps, make settings changes, test it out, etc...

Well I got my @me email set up and like the web interface and how it syncs up with the cloud.

Only issue with iCloud so far is that I installed the control panel on my work PC (Win 7 64) and it broke Outlook and the iCloud control panel would not open. Once I uninstalled it everything was back to normal though.

If they can get that ironed out it will be nice.

Yup, 04.11.08 for me, UK, iPhone 4 unlocked, currently on Orange.

Check all of your settings. At least on my iPhone 4, once I selected the options I wanted and disable the stuff I didn't need, I found the battery life to be similar to iOS 4. A stark difference from the shit battery life I had with the betas.

Thanks guys - interesting that one of you has 05.xx, must be an even newer version, not sure why me and Dave aren't on that? And thanks Dave, it's good to know someone has that baseband actually working okay for them. Really appreciate it.

On a side note, NewsStand, an app that I absolutely will not ever use, ever, is one that you cannot delete, and more importantly, you can't hide away in a folder either! Thank god for SBSettings :(

I love how I am discoverying new features as I use the iOS, now I know what it feels like to resist spoilers and going into a game fresh... bur with an OS instead. I discovered the reading list right away but I had no idea there was a built-in reader for Safari for Web articles. One of the reasons I don't use Instapaper much is because it is a hassle to open another app, but this makes Instapaper pretty obsolete for me.

Aside from the notifications not being manually sortable everything is great (well, maybe if my newsstand has some free and good content then it would be really great :p).

I do have a question as to what the "my info" option inside the contacts section of the mails settings is. When I click on it just asks me to select a contact from my contact list, which makes no sense. Also made a me.com email account within the iCloud settings menu (regretted not getting my full name for gmail), but I can't access or sync with it from the mail app for some reason afterwards (just constant loading by the network).

Yeah, I do. Still, it's odd that they don't mention that this feature is unavailable to the original hardware. :\

It's possible, for some reason it isn't for some people. Tried restarting the phone/resetting the settings?

The My Info section is how the phone defines who you are, what your name/home is and so forth. I imagine Siri makes use of this also.

I assumed that the "My Info" stuff was added in for Siri. If you've seen some of the videos of how it works, you'll see people say stuff like "Remind me to pick-up eggs after I leave work" and Siri will create a geotagged reminder that goes off automatically when you leave the address that you designated as "Work."

You can do similar things like "Text my Dad" or "Call my Wife" and Siri knows who those people are based on you designating them in the "My Info." I went in and added an address for my office and established relationships with several people.

Yeah it was only one day of use so I might be jumping the gun but it only seemed to be maybe 10% worse.

There are so many factors that go into battery life (maybe I was getting more emails than usual, maybe my connection was shit...), that I will hold off on making final judgement.

Custom text sounds without jailbreaking. Sad that that is the killer feature for me.

And the notifications are awesome now. You will notice it.

Oh my god! Really?! I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet but that's what I've been waiting for. My killer feature as well. That was the only reason I ever even thought about jailbreaking.

was comparing my ipad 2 with colleagues iphone. The update is much more impressive on the iphone. Wifi only devices don't benefit that much from it.

Also I'm not buying into icloud. This is the same thing as google has been doing forever and I already have a working google solution on the ipad which works great, so no switching for me.

Weird that icloud doesn't see my contacts and try to back them up though, I thought google contacts were accessed locally and synced, so I figured that icloud would pick em up as well, but that's not the case.

Ah, i see, so it does not matter which contact is specifically selected under the "my info" option then since it utilizes my whole contact list?

Okaaaay, then turn them all off — problem solved.

I really like the way I can sync using exchange with Gmail and Google contacts and calendar over 3G and not needing wifi, it is quick and reliable. Even on my Mac I sync my iCalendar with Google automatically along with my contacts, so iCloud just adds an extra layer of redundancy so far.

I tried adding in the iCloud calendar for an extra source of backup and it is nowhere near as quick or it might just do it over wifi (not sure). I like how iCloud can sync my settings and photos, but only while charging and over wifi is a bit limiting.

You create 1 entry with all the info in it for yourself, you can call it whatever you like. The "Home" "Work" etc. locations are defined by their entry labels and addresses within this contacts entry.

It isn't as evident/useful without Siri I imagine.

The Reminders app uses the locations and lists the ones you have in your "My Info" entry by default as alternatives for use in geofenced reminders etc. (e.g. notify me when i arrive "home").

Wifi sync doesn't require it to be connected to power. You can initiate it at any time in settings. It only requires power when it does the once a day automatic wireless sync.

For the life of me I can't see that working well at all, but that never seems to stop people from wanting it.

Are you really going to swipe four fingers on your tiny iPhone screen, or just hit the damn button?

Are the twitter notifications not showing up for anyone else here?
I've set twitter up to show the notifications in banner form, but I'm not seeing anything.

any suggestions?

The Twitter app only notifies you of direct messages or @mentions.
