This happened to me. Press the update button. You'll get a dialogue box asking you if you want to update to iOS 5.

For some reason iTunes gets confused if you aren't on the very latest pre-5.0 update. You should still get 5.0 rather than the version mentioned.
I am pressing the update button. It's just telling me it's up to date with version 4.2.1. Unless there's another update button that I'm not seeing.

Anyone know how much data iMessages will be consuming? I have a 500mb/month limit, and before iOS 5 I was using about 350mb/month. So assuming I'll still do the same stuff, I'll be having about 150mb remaining.

That should be sufficient for iMessage data right? I plan to use the iMessage quite a bit as well
I'm sure it's similar to what's app. And right now my usage for 4000 messages sent and about 4000 messages received is a whopping 3.2 mb.

That includes a few photos sent each day.

It uses next to nothing in data. Unless your sending a lot of video regularly.

I had no issues updating my 4 and my wife's 3GS. Loving iOS5, the only thing that I don't like is that they got rid of the iPod app and split it into music and video.
Count me as another person who doesn't like that they split up music and video.

That's why I'm so glad about iMessage. Texting is the absolute biggest rip-off ever when you consider how much you're paying to send trivial amounts of data. I really hope this cuts deep into the phone companies' text profits. Of course they'll then just jack up our voice plans to make up the difference.

When carriers switch to VoIP (probably sometime after LTE-A is widespread), everything will be on a hella-expensive data bill.

Here's something to keep an eye on for those of us that use Instapaper (and stuff like comic readers) a lot...

http://www.marco.org/2011/10/13/ios5-caches-cleaning

There’s no longer anywhere to store files that don’t need to be backed up (or can’t be, by the new policy) but shouldn’t be randomly deleted. This is problematic for lots of apps, including this quick list off the top of my head:
  • Instapaper and anything that saves web articles for offline reading
  • Ebook and comic-book apps (including iBooks, if the rules apply to it)
  • Podcast clients (the rules don’t apply to synced podcasts from iTunes)
  • Offline Wikipedia apps
  • Offline mapping programs
The common theme is offline. It’s easy to assume that this isn’t a big problem — that surely, anything downloadable can be redownloaded at any time. But that’s not the case.

A common scenario: an Instapaper customer is stocking up an iPad for a long flight. She syncs a bunch of movies and podcasts, downloads some magazines, and buys a few new games, leaving very little free space. Right before boarding, she remembers to download the newest issue of The Economist. (I think highly of my customers.) This causes free space to fall below the threshold that triggers the cleaner, which — in the background, unbeknownst to her — deletes everything that was saved in Instapaper. Later in the flight, with no internet connectivity, she goes to launch Instapaper and finds it completely empty.

(Last week, almost this exact scenario happened to one of my customers.)

It creates a terrible experience for everyone

I've been asking this numerous times and nobody can answer it. I've got the same problem.
In the end I just turned off Badges for my Edge app, and that removed it, but it's still annoying that it brings one up when I've read the issue. Maybe it's because I didn't buy last month's issue that also happens to be in the store?

So does iCloud's bookmarks syncing include Safari's Bookmark Bar?

Reason I ask: I've set up iCloud on both my iPad and Mac, but both bookmark bars still look different.

Mine are identical between an iPad, iPhone, and MacBook.

History is not shared, but I kind of wish it was.

Weird. Both my iPad and Macbook are set up with the same iCloud account and all. Mail, iCal and pretty much everything else worked fine but idk what's wrong with Safari on my Mac. I think I'm going to have to reinstall.

I believe you have to attach those addresses to your friends' respective contact cards. Otherwise, iOS can't determine a name from a random Apple ID.
You're my savior! Thanks so much!

YOur iDevice is too old. iPod touch 3G or iPhone 3GS and above only, I'm afraid.

Were you previously using MobileMe?

In Gmail on a browser, go to Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP and change the setting "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:"
I was under the impression that using IMAP lost you some functionality (i.e. push mail) from using the Exchange settings?

Terrell said:
Yep, really. Tell me what phone call you would expect to get in the middle of the night that requires you to get out of bed to answer it.
Ignoring the fact that what you're asking is a very personal question, is your entire life cocooned within the confines of your home such that you can't understand why someone might want to be in a position to receive a phone call in the middle of the night?

dream said:
I really wish Apple would find a way to tie that to carrier settings or something. It seems silly to be limited to 20MB when I have a 6GB data bucket.
They want you to PAY for that data, not USE it.

So I have a Canadian friend (lol i know right) and if he texts me, he gets charged since it's international.

We not both have iOS 5. Will that still apply? The international thing? Or is he safe to use iMessage with me now?

As long as you both have an internet connection, it should work. Location is irrelevant. You'll know it's an iMessage- it will be in blue. Texts are green.

Is there anyway to see your photostream on www.icloud.com??
Don't think so. It's iOS5/Lion exclusive I think, although you can access it with the iCloud Control Centre on Windows as well.

You've got to think they're going to add that functionality at some point though. Along with the ability to properly manage the photos therein.

I didn't ask for a personal example, I asked for an example irrespective of your own personal issues.
And no, I'm not the shut-in you're implying, I'm a working professional who would need a damn good reason to wake up in the middle of the night when I have to work the next day. I'm asking for such an example.

Anyone know if there is still a way to import all of your Facebook contacts into iOS?
Go to Friends, click the box shaped icon in the top right. You'll see the option to sync contacts.

I'm not implying anything, I just don't understand how it's difficult to grasp the possibility that you might get a call in the middle of the night - elderly parents maybe? Perhaps he's an older person and might get a call from his kids to pick them up in the middle of the night?

My example is more straightforward. Work might call me in the middle of the night (which I need to take), but that doesn't mean I want to be woken up with any and every alert that my phone throws out.

Managed to update to iOS5, but iPad's empty and i can't sync. What am i doing wrong? Here's what i've done step by step:

- Backed up iPad2
- Updated iTunes to 10.5
- Updated to iOS5 through Shift-Restore
- Restore from Backup

But now:

- All apps are gone, mandatory Apple apps are there, and in the custom folders i put them in
- When i download Apps through App Store > Purchased, all save data is there (which makes it seem the backup restore has worked)
- Sync button is greyed out (as well as button 'Apply') in iTunes. Can't sync.
- I always had manual management of iPad enabled, but i can't drag and drop apps to the iPad. Changing this in the Summary tab does nothing.
- When i look into the Apps tab in iTunes on 'My iPad', i see all apps i installed before the update. However, all these apps are on page 4-8, with page 3 greyed out.

Can anyone help out? Can't seem to fins any solutions on Google

Ok, so I need help. :(

I decided to update my 3GS to iOS5, and when I finish configuring it...all my messages and contacts were gone. I tried to restore my data using iTunes, but it didn't restore my messages/contacts. What the fuck is the point of syncing/backing up if it doesn't always save the parts that actually matter?

Is there any way I can restore my data, or should I start freaking out?

Apps were very slowly restored in the background, after it seemed the update was finished. I just left the iPad plugged in to iTunes.

I haven't read the whole thread to see if anyone else has talked about it, and I might be crazy, but the battery life on my iPhone 4 actually seems noticeably better after updating.

After 3:30 hours of usage it's at 45% battery life, where before it would probably be hanging at around 30% or so.

Hmm will try leaving it plugged in longer. Is there any indicator that it's still restoring/syncing? My iPad just goes to the initial iOS5 setup process when i unlock after 'Restoring Backup' bar has disappeared.

You should see a little syncing icon in the iPhone's status bar (by your carrier/signal strength) when it's doing it's thing.

iTunes should list the files it's restoring in the status bar. Something along the lines of "Restoring file X out of XXX. [game/music/photo name here]". This happens after the "restoring from backup" step is completed and it could be hundreds of files depending on how many photos/videos you got in your Camera roll. Once completed all your stuff should be exactly where you left them prior to updating your device.

If I had to guess, all you guys with missing games etc. after a restore, maybe you unplugged your device before this step? I did that once or twice accidentally during the beta upgrading process months back, but it could be resolved by just restoring from the same backup again and leaving it to do it's thing completely.

There was a small "restoring apps" pop-up in itunes. I went through the iOS5 setup process and apps started to appear on the iPad, then music, videos, photos.

I don't recall seeing any status bar similar to the one you see when you sync (Copying *** of ***/Downloading ***). Will check again when i get back from work tonight.

Maybe I'm dumb, but by what method are reminders pushed through iCloud to OSX?

Are they pushed to OSX at all?
yep - they reside in iCal. go to View -> Reminders

In regards to over-the-air syncing (the plug in and let it sync), does it happen immediately? I keep doing the sync, back ups, and they do appear as last completed, but they all finish around 3AM, and I plug it in at like 12 at the latest. I believe it is actively syncing, but I can't know for sure, because I never get to see the twirling arrows or anything, except when I go to the iCloud menu, under Settings.

My iOS version is the GM one (I believe it's unchanged, right?) and this is with an iPhone 4.

now I have imessage me and a couple of mates made a group and it's been so chatty with texts and imnages now we don't have to think about stupid charges. Game Changing!

Now once you're in the group chat you can never get out of it unless all of you delete the convo from your histories. Me and a buddy have had great fun chat 'griefing' another close friend of ours by talking to each other in the group convo he's also in. :P

iMessages are fantastic though, truly.

Apple wanted every platform to have the same configuration i.e. iPod Touch, iPad and now the iPhone. I will admit it was neat both music and video as one app under iPod.

Also, on the iTunes Wi-Fi Sync I know this is stupid of me but I thought if you were connected to any wireless network, doesn't matter if your near your PC or not you would be able to sync wirelessly. But you have to be on the same wireless network for it to connect and sync wirelessly lol

My phone is broken. There are apps on my phone that do not appear on my phone. App store says spotify is installed. I can search for spotify and find it under search but to actually see the app on the phone is a different story. I cannot believe this crap is happening again.

edit: so i power down my phone and turn it back on and now the apps that i downloaded are showing up.

i swear this phone is giving me so much stress.

I Upgraded both my iPod touch 4th gen and ipad2 to iOS 5 with no problems last night but today I discovered several huge problems For me with playlists and podcasts:
  • smartplaylists are not creatable or editable in any way on my devices, which kind makes it hard to be "PC free" if you want to use them.
  • on the touch, playlists are sorted by the first alphanumeric character in the name (with numbers after letters). Any other leading characters is ignored, which is frustrating because I use dashes and stars to force playlists to the top of the lists so I can quickly find and access them (particularly when connected to my car stereo where I'm too busy driving to be hunting for my playlist to play podcasts). The iPad does not have this particular problem.
  • on the iPad, the playlists are forced into a grid format that you can't reorder or resize. The first 10 or so playlists are some sort of 'genius' lists that are auto-generated and push all of my playlists off the top of the screen. I can delete one or more of them, but they come back the next time i synch. On the touch these lists are on a separate genius button where they can be easily ignored.
  • playlist contents do not change to the order I set to play them in. I have a smart playlist that I use for new podcasts that I need to play. Each podcast is added to the end of the list as they are downloaded and I'll usually connect my ipod for an initial synch with the new podcasts and then drag them around in iTunes into the order I will be listening to them. But after i've rearranged the play order the ipod/ipad do not reflect the changes when i run e synch again--the changes in the play order are not reflected. I have not yet tried rearranging a music playlist to see if its just podcasts that have the problem.
  • if I move playlists into or out of folders, the change is not reflected on the iPod or iPad. They stay in whatever folder location they were initially synced too. If I move the playlists out of a folder and then delete that folder the playlists that were in that folder no longer appear. I've had to work around this by creating a new playlist in the location I want it to be in and hand replicating all the settings. Note: if I expand the iPod in the devices lists the folder and playlist contents are displayed correctly, it is just the music app where they are incorrect.
  • thankfully, you can now have podcasts in top level playlists on the iPad. But now video podcastss no longer appear at all. Previously, videos would show up in a playlist but the iPad would switch over to the video app to actually play it--and only that one video, you would have to then switch back to the Music app to go to the next video or song in the playlist. Videos now seem to be totally removed from the ipad music app and won't appear. But the ipad Video app has no playlist functionality and you have to manually find and select videos to play. The iPod touch version of the Music App shows videos in playlists just fine though I haven't tried to play any on it yet to see if it now has the 'switchover' problem.

Still looking to see if I can find work arounds to these problems but it looks like any I find are likely to be difficult or annoying.

Edit: to fix the play list order problem on the iPod, I'm renaming my playlists to start with an A1, A2, etc. This makes it slightly more difficult to read the names, but at least my favorite and most frequent lists can now appear first.

Am I going crazy, or is there an option to search within a web page in Safari now? I swear a search like that just flashed up on my screen, but I cancelled it wanting to go to the Google search in the top right, and now I can't get the in-page search working again...

There is an option to search within the current web page now, yes. It shows up underneath the suggested Google searches in a "On this page (X match)" header when you type something.

This has been in since iOS4. just scroll down on the search results page in safari.

Just discovered some new changes that I didn't know about, thought i'd share;

-When using the camera app, you can swipe to the right to go straight to your camera roll, so basically your camera app acts as the newest photo and you can swipe right to see shots you took.

-This might be common knowledge but you can now lock the exposure/focus by holding tapping and holding for a second; really useful.

-When writing an email you can now drag and drop the contact into whatever field you want.

-Song and album information now scrolls so you can FINALLY see the whole album/song title where before it just ended with a '...'

-You can now delete your recent calls one by one instead of all of them, great news for cheating husbands.

-Multiple apps can be downloaded/installed at once, instead of one-by-one

And some other stuff that may be more common knowledge for some, but new to others;

-Custom keyboard shortcuts can be made in the settings, so when you type gaf it automatically makes it GAF or NeoGAF through correction. sm=Spider-Man, etc.

-Custom vibration from incoming calls as well as ability to set the LED flash to go off with incoming calls.

-Custom tones from everything to calendar events to voicemail.

-Define option when selecting text, no more need for a dictionary app.

-You can totally disable in-app purchasing across all apps, great news for people with kids using scammy apps.

A bunch of small features like this, but most are easy to spot out over time.
