so if I set my iPhone to wifi sync I notice on my laptop it my phone is always appearing on iTunes, how much of a battery drain is this on my phone?

Shouldn't be any additional drain. iTunes is just noticing that it's connected to the same wifi network.

Guys, I'm a little confused as to why this has happened, but since resorting my phone for an iOS 5 upgrade, what used to be just a single folder of photos and videos, has split into 4 and it's made it an absolute nightmare to find anything. For example:

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\823WGTMA
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\858HDJES
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\860OKMZO
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\965YOKDJ

Is there anyway to easily merge these back into just a single folder? And how would I know which of them the iPhone will save to?

I cannot cut and paste between the folders.

Thanks
Hmm, just to add to this, they all show up as separate folders on my phone too, but I cannot add them back into the camera roll:

photo.jpg

Seems it's related to photostream, but if I try to disable it (which I really, really want to) it says it will delete my photos, and not just move them back into the camera roll.

Seriously WTF?

It seems like my iPad 2 isn't cooperating with iCloud nearly as well as my iPhone 4 is.

Notifications added, apps downloaded on iPad? Boom, on my iPhone before I can even look.

It isn't working the opposite direction though.

I've checked all the settings thoroughly, and as far as I can tell all iCloud and Store settings are identical between the two devices.

EDIT: It's not all aspects of iCloud that are giving me problems. Photos are syncing back and forth between the two devices without issue.

If you don't have exchange access to your work account, then you'll need to export your Outlook calendar to another service or program that can sync with the iPhone.

The best option is Google Calendar or iCloud so you won't be tied down by a program sitting on a single hard disk but rather in the cloud where you can edit it wherever and whenever. Just google how to export outlook to Google Calendar and then just import that into Google Calendar. And then to set it up on your phone, follow this: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252

Thanks a lot, will give it a try!

Shouldn't there already be a copy of those photos in the camera roll of whatever device you took the photos on?

Any way to get my reminders to show up in the notification center?
I turned it on in notifications but my reminders don't show up. Very annoying.

They only show up if they're for that day. And yes it's pretty annoying. I feel like they put out the most half-assed reminders and notification thing that they could.

Played around with Reminders a bit more with location alerts, and I've pretty much figured out what's wrong with it. The location reminders are too precise. You need to be pretty damn close to where it thinks the location is or it won't go off. So if you're going to someone's house, it'll be perfect. In fact mine went off after I got inside the garage.

However, if you're using them for something that has a bigger location, there is a good chance it won't go off because you won't be close enough to the actual coordinates that it thinks it should be at. For example, I tried the hospital and that's big campus so it never triggered. I would imagine this would apply to places like parks, large schools, fairgrounds, malls, stadiums, hospitals, large companies, and so forth.

They really should either allow a bigger range or allow you to define a radius of when to be alerted. Being notified when arriving at work I would imagine could be a problem if you try o rely on it. So right now, I think Reminders are a bit unreliable when you're using location based ones. I hope they fix that in the future because the concept is great.

I'm really digging Reminders. I'd used the to-do list in iCal quite a bit a couple of years ago, but since it didn't sync with anything, and was completely inaccessible on the iPhone, it was a little inconvenient and I eventually stopped. But now that it syncs to my iPhone, my Mac at home and Outlook on my work PC, it's great.

I have lists set up for home, work, roller derby and the pub quiz thing I do on the side, and I just check them off as I get things done and add new stuff as it comes. It doesn't matter where I am, it all just stays up to date. If there's a deadline or a time I'd like reminded, I set it, if not, I leave that part blank.

I don't even have a 4S yet. If/when I upgrade, I'm sure Siri and location based stuff will make it even better.

The only thing I wish (kinda) it had was a way to share the home reminder list with my wife. I did share a calendar with her, but I don't think a reminder list can be shared.

I don't understand why Apple can't fix the iPhone camera. It's starting to slow down to come up again. It was lightning fast when I first upgraded to iOS5 so I thought they fixed it, but now it's steadily getting slower to come up. What could cause it to take so long to access over time the more that you use it and why can't Apple fix it?

When it happened to her phone I kept trying to sync and desync it and it wasn't working at all until I tried the thing I just suggested to you. Hope it works for you.

Alright, your advice worked. Thank you. The menu options were a bit different though, so what I did was delete my entire iTunes music library and re-add everything. Got rid of a bunch I never listened to, so there's now a lot less clutter.

Yeah, so ummm....iPhone noob here and I have a whole slew of questions. Hopefully it's okay to post these here instead of the iOS 5 thread (why do we have two of them anyway?)

Bear with me here.....I suck @ iPhonelolz:

1. In a text messaging window, how exactly can I scroll to the VERY top of the convo so I can see the very useful buttons of "Call", "FaceTime", and "Contact"? There were a couple times I was able to "shoot" right up to the very top, but I haven't been able to do it on purpose yet. I originally thought it was double-tapping on the name. Anyone know this trick?

2. In the App Store, how can I view all the apps developed by a developer? In Android, this was really easy. Can't figure out how to do it in the App Store.

3. So I figured out how to put ringtones on my phone (put the .m4r file in the Ringtones category of iTunes), but how do I put text tones? If they're in the Ringtones category in iTunes, they don't show up in the text tone selection screen

4. I have my iPhone syncing music the same way my iPod does (or at least it appears that way). But in the Music app, in the "Artists" category, it only lists the "Album Artists" tag. So if I have songs without an "Album Artists", that particular artists won't show up on my iPhone when browsing by artist. Why does it do this? My iPod doesn't do this, and I have them synced the same exact way as far as music goes. Maybe there's something I'm overlooking?

5. Whenever I get a text message, it alerts me twice. To change this, I went to Settings>Notifications>Messages and made "Repeat Alert" read "Never." I still get two alert noises if I don't check a text I receive. Why is it doing this?

6. In Mail Settings, I have it set to show 500 Recent Messages, but when I open the Mail app and my inbox, it shows noticeably less. Why is this?

Thanks a billion in advance, guys!

I got you covered on the iPhone 4S thread.

Wifi sync doesn't seem to work most of the time for me. The devices are always there in iTunes but when I actually go to make any changes they disappear before anything happens. iTunes seems to open itself at random intervals as well. I'm thinking of turning it off until they actually get it working properly. :-\

I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue with the 4S or a software issue with iOS 5. On my 3GS, when I was listening to music or podcasts, an incoming text or e-mail would sound the chosen ringtone through my headphones, letting me know that something arrived even if the silent switch was on. With Siri, I was excited that I would be able to have these messages read to me instead of having to take the phone out of my pocket.

But for some reason, with my 4S I never hear a chime when a text or e-mail comes - I was streaming the latest ThisIsMyNext podcast on the bus the other day, and when I took the phone out of my pocket to open the browser, I saw that I had 5 new e-mails and a couple text messages. I upgraded my 3GS to iOS 5, but the battery is dead so I can't test it at the moment. Why doesn't it make a sound anymore? Do I need to turn off the silent switch now?

Wifi syncing works for me, but only manually. When I plug it in to charge nothing happens. I wonder if it's because I turn off automatic syncing? That would make sense, but nowhere does it say that option affects wifi syncing.

In addition, I can't remember, but between iCloud, find my mac and wifi syncing, I remember the system telling me I had to turn on 'wake on LAN'. I assume this is the cause of my most recent issue, which is that when my MacBook Pro goes to sleep after inactivity with the lid open, every now and again, my SuperDrive makes the noise that sounds like the computer is waking, but then the computer promptly returns to sleep. Is this normal for that function?

I had that problem during the iOS 5 beta once after upgrading, but I only had 2 "dfgdfgd" folders on my computer. Only files in one of the folders showed in the Camera Roll.

I was able to just move files from the second folder into the other and then all my photos appeared as normal on the phone itself. A popup window showed up stating "you can't move files this way" or similar, but they were moved anyway (and retained exif/meta data). On Windows 7, as an administrator (if that matters).

Every time I add an event into my calendar on the iCloud website, it syncs back to my iPhone with an added hour (so if I add 12:30 on the website, it appears as 1:30 on the phone).

Is this happening for anyone else?

Oh wow, really? That is great, thank you... I'm going to try and move all of the photos later when I get home then.

Did you literally just drag the photos from one folder to another in explorer? I swear that didn't work for me, but I'll try again and cross my fingers.

It probably sounds like I'm being super picky, but it really is such a nightmare, for example I can't even easily sort through and delete/group photos now, so whereas before all of my 'Rhodes 2011' or 'London 2010' photos would be together, and I could easily see them as a group, they are now randomly fragmented between 4 different folders...

Yep, just drag & dropped via Explorer.

I did take a photo with the phone first though, so that at least 1 photo appeared in the "correct" Camera Roll folder both on my phone and computer. No idea if that made any difference, was mostly for my own sanity to see which folder the phone was currently using as the Camera Roll location.

I no longer use or have access to a Windows installation though (moved to OSX Lion) so I can't vouch this method still works but it did during the beta, it should though.

I didn't try taking a local photo first but the two gibberish folders were definitely locked read-only in my case. Even as admin there was no way to move or c/p the contents on-device. :/

On the plus side moving the camera roll off the phone shrunk my iCloud backup from 3.x GB to >500MB...

Okay, well I have a couple other questions that I wrote down but they're actually something I don't know if anyone here is doing (synching with Google related), so I'll ask the easy questions first:

1. Right, so when I'm typing and I mistype a word and it displays a suggestion word in a mini-bubble thing, is there no way I can tap that bubble? The only way I know how to get it to use the word is to just hit space or add punctuation. Is that bubble for looks only? Just wondering.

2. In Safari, is there a way to find specific words on a web page (similar to Command+F/Cntrl+F)? I used this ALL the time on Android and on my computer, so losing this is a sad thing if it's not possible

Now the weirder ones....

3. Sooo, I'm using an Exchange protocol to sync my Google contacts, calendar, and Gmail. This is working fine for me so far, minus a couple OCD issues of mine. But then today, I noticed in iTunes there's an option to sync with Google Contacts under the Info tab>Sync Address Book Contacts when I have my iPhone plugged in. Right now it's turned off, but if I DID select it, what would the difference be between this and the way it works with Exchange? I'm afraid to try it because of duplicating data and stuff. I think the difference might be that it doesn't sync through the air, but only when I connect it to iTunes...

4. On iPhone, while synching with Google Contacts, if I add a contact to Favorites, will it show up as Starred on Gmail.com? Doesn't seem to work when I try it....

5. If anyone else is synching their Mail app with Gmail via Exchange, is this what it looks like? Why do I have the things under [Gmail]? Is it because I once synched it via IMAP with Gmail? Basically, is this what it's supposed to look like:

iphone.png

Sheesh, I hope this is the last of my questions :\

1. The bubble shows what your word is going to be replaced with, you tap it if you want to cancel that replacement. Press space or add punctuation if you want to let it replace the word.

2. Yes, once you're on a website type what you want to find in the search bar, scroll to the very bottom of the results. (It'll say "On This Page" or something similar)

So will I finally be able to get AirPlay mirroring to work with the new apple tv update? Wouldn't work at all before despite having the latest software available. Apparently apple pulled one of the updates or something like that.

I've had no problems with AirPlay mirroring but continue to have issues with my Photo Stream showing up. Photo Stream works great with my iPhone and iPad, but not at all on AppleTV.

Just realized that Stanza is broken with iOS 5, with pretty much a 0% chance of it ever being updated. That really blows, as it was by far the best reader app for iPhone, and it was free as well.

Anyone know of any good book reader apps that come close to stanza? It would be awesome if they were free, but if they are as good as stanza i dont mind paying.

They released 4.4.1 and pulled it almost immediately. Then I had to update twice to get 4.4.2 to stick (resets all of your settings). AirPlay seems okay for me.

Question about Iphone 4s/ios5.

Had my evo 4g that I love stolen :(

I already have an asus transformer that I love. So I've been contemplating going iphone for my new cell just to get the apparently great camera, and the few games a year I wish I could play that don't come to Android.

My one deala breaker is using the itunes client on my pc. Can I just download all my apps straight to my cell without using itunes on my pc? Can I connect it to my pc and just drag and drop my music in or will it force me to reinstall itunes and use that to "sync" etc? If not can I just download them onto my iphone from my home server without having to deal with itunes? It's basically the deal maker or breaker here.

If you have stuff that was not bought on iTunes I think you need iTunes to transfer it to your iPhone. With iOS5 everything else can be done just from the phone (apps, buying new media but only from iTunes, etc.).

I don't know of another way to transfer your media but if you have unlimited data I believe you can just stream it to your phone with a few different apps.

Thans for the info, major bummer :( Most of the time that I'd want to listen to music I own I'm not near wifi/don't have good 3/4g coverage so that's why I hoped I could find some way to end around just download it off my server. I guess I could just ignore music on my phone and get a bigger microsd card for my sansa clip.

It depends on which ebook formats you were using Stanza for. The Kobo app and the Bluefire Reader app are free substitutes for Stanza that can handle ePub.

I just use iBooks myself, dragged my .epubs and .pdfs I had since before via iTunes into the "Books" section on the sidebar (I don't sync Books) and they show up as if purchased within iBooks on the phone as normal.

I think its a bug but it may or may not get fixed. A bunch of my soundtracks do this now an I still haven't figured out how to manipulate the tags to fix it.

The feature I'm loving the most is being able to connect to any AirPlay station and stream ALL audio content. It works well for my girlfriend, who has Rhapsody and previously couldn't listen on our living room speakers without unplugging and moving stuff around.

Is this feature in Lion? I have Snow Leopard, and it's just bizarre that only iTunes content can use AirPlay. I know there are 3rd-party solutions for this, but it seems odd that I can use AirPlay to stream audio from a YouTube video from my phone, but not my Mac.

I've had trouble understanding iCloud and wireless syncing since I updated my iTouch. When and how exactly does my iTouch get updated over Wi-Fi? I'll notice randomly that sometimes it picks up updates from iTunes that was done on my Macbook, but not all the time. Also I inputted all my contacts from my terrible cell phone so that I could get them to the iCloud, or even onto my Macbook for that matter and they aren't showing up on either (actually I have no idea how to look at phonebook contacts on a Macbook). Can anyone help me with this? I've gone into the settings I feel like and everything should be working...

.

This! This is absolutely my favourite feature on my iPhone. It's my first iPhone and I had no idea it was possible until I accidentally found it. I'm currently streaming music to my Apple TV from my phone (which is accessing music from either Spotify or my iTunes library downstairs). It literally works first time, every time, and is flawless. I love it. This is a massive killer app and is so much more impressive than Siri, Notifications, iMessage, and so on

I have noticed this as well. If I go to artist, a lot of stuff is missing, whereas if I go to songs, everything in my library is there.

It's true. You can turn this off in music settings.

I really wish I could set the number of calendar notifications in the notification center to 3, rather than 1, 5, or 10. Why would they restrict it to those amounts?
