iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

Question for y'all.

After my alarm clock died a while back, I've been using my phone as my morning alarm for sometime.

I remember daylight saving being an 'issue' before. Has this been addressed yet, or should I go pick up a cheap alarm clock today/tomorrow?

You guys think that they'll do an update with iMessage group chat?

Like maybe a title for the chat, ability to add/remove members, time frames, different colors for each person?

Group chat is awesome, but it's still very basic
Seeing if anyone knows any rumors of this being on an update

Pretty disappointed with IOS 5 so far.

- Installing was a pain as it wiped out all my music. this took a while to fix.
- Battery life is noticeably worse
- Tons of "crash to desktop." This is most evident under Settings
- Can't do any gestures to remove notifications off the screen once acknowledged

+ The camera from the lock screen in nice

I'm not a facebook or twitter user so updates in those areas have no effect on me.

Anybody with the beta see a difference in battery life?

I was on beta from 1 to GM on two 3G Ses (??). One of them always had shit battery life, much, much worse than anything anyone is complaining about with the release. One of them had ridiculously good battery life, where the release puts the battery more in line with late iOS3/early iOS 4. Hope that answers your question.

Sorry, I meant the 5.0.1 beta.

My alarms worked as advertised when daylight savings ended here (October 30th), both repeating alarms and stand alone ones. Seems fixed.

My battery drainage has decreased massively on 5.0.1 compared to 5.0. That said, 5.0 was alright as well with "Set Time Zone" turned off. Seems to be equal or slightly better than iOS 4 was on the iPhone 4 now. Sitting on 68% after a day's worth of usage (7h21min standby, 3h22min usage).

I have set a recurring alarm for sunday and saturday and a stand alone alarm for sunday in the morning. I've had daylight savings fuck up alarm enough times that I do this.

Can't get my iPad safari bookmarks to transfer over to my Windows Safari. Turned on Bookmarks in the iCloud settings on iPad aswell as the iCloud controlpanel on the computer. But nope.

Helpz.

I have a question that relates to the new Album Artist option and setting up my albums.

Example:

A soundtrack with various different artists on the album. I don't want it to show up in my iPod listings as 10 different artists for that album.. I'd much prefer if it could just be under the title of the movie and then inside are the 10 songs. I don't NEED to see the artist name in iPod but in iTunes I'd have the option to Get Info and see who the artist was.

I'd also like if all the songs were under 1 album artwork in iTunes and not 10 different ones.

What is the best way to set this up for my soundtracks?

If you make the album artist "Various Artists" or whatever and put the actual artist in the "Artist" field for each song, then sort by album artist, that should work fine. I'm not 100% sure but you may need to check "Part of a Compilation" for all of the songs as well.

THAT WORKED!

Awesome. However, now I need to go through every song (or album) to make sure that there is something in the Album Artist field or else it won't show up in my iPod app.

So far for the past several years I've mostly just been putting the artist in Artist and leaving the Album Artist blank.

So does using iCloud for contact syncing provide any benefits over just using Google?
Because if there are any differences between the two I'll go through the effort to migrate my contacts, but if there isn't then there is no reason to change over.

Can anyone recommend some really useful iPhone apps? Stuff that has improved your lives significantly.

There's a thread somewhere named "Best of iOS" that should have everything you want.

and

Simplenote ( Multi platform note taking )

My wifi iPad has my iCloud account enabled on it. Push is enabled but won't check for new messages unless I open the mail app. Others are experiencing this, right?

Why do I have duplicate songs from iTunes purchases on my iPhone but not on my Mac?

Is one the iCloud version and the other the downloaded version? How do I get rid of the duplicates?

I had this when I tried it on my iCloud account as well. I went back to my Gmail account so I have no idea if it's still an issue or not (though it sounds like it is).

I've been having some issues with my music on my iPhone 4 since upgrading to iOS5.

I had to turn off my phone completely two days ago because the network connection was hanging whenever I tried to access Safari (first time I've turned off my iPhone completely in a long time), and when I turned my phone back on, about half of my songs (150 out of 300) were completely gone from my iPhone. Album artwork will also randomly disappear from songs on my phone (whether they've been purchased from iTunes or not).

I can only assume that it's a software issue and will hopefully be resolved when 5.0.1 is released, but it's frustrating as hell.

iMessages really needs to compress pictures a bit. Takes forever to send a picture taken on my 4S. I assume it's sending in all it's full 8mp HD sized glory. Really unnecessary 99% of the time. What's app does this right.

This is on wifi btw so it's not a slow connection.

^ panorama mode sounds sweet.

I don't feel like messing with the new beta as I'm satisfied with the battery situation in my iPhone 4 but I really want to know if the map bug will be fixed. I'm not in South Africa but it's also affecting my city, I can still search and find addresses but the dropped pin functionality is broken.

Does anyone else notice a more "laggy" experience with ios5 on their iphone 4? I don't have that many apps on my phone, so i'm pretty confused as to what i should do... Any suggestions or good online guides you would recommend?

I'm not sure what you define as laggy. I was one of the few folks who felt that iOS 5 made a few things take slightly longer than before. for example, the time it takes for the system keyboard to pop up in apps or the time an app would take to come out of suspended animation.

it wasn't a dealbreaker but I did notice it here and there.

not much to do about it, from what I can tell.

Ever since iOS5, I've noticed my iPhone 4 3G just doesn't work. Websites won't load, apps won't load, even with full signal bars for 3G. Wifi works fine so I know it's not the browser or apps themselves, it's just network 3G will stop working for really long periods of time. Rebooting the device typically solves the problem, but I don't want to have to keep doing it.

Is anyone else having this problem? What could be causing it and how can it be fixed?

Did Apple say if developers will be able to deliver delta updates for their apps?
I swore I heard that too but I've since been told its still all or nothing for third party apps.

Apple specified delta updates for Mac App Store apps. they didn’t specify anything (publicly) for iOS apps. that may still come in the future (it’ll be nice for the bigger 500 MB+ apps, for sure)

Am I the only one who feels like the iPhone 4 camera is worse on iOS5? I think there is something with HDR photos that looks way worse than they did in 4, often unsharp.

Yes, seriously! That was one of the biggest features I was looking forward to with iOS5. It seems like it just fell of the map. I thought it was supposed to be released in October.

they're straight up late. Apple just released a second beta of itunes 10.5.1 for developers with the itunes match stuff enabled.

I suppose we'll see another leaked email from Apple saying they're resetting the itunes match libraries and then it'll go public in late November.

Yes. The camera on the i4 was excellent before iOS5. It took very crisp high def pics. Now, they are considerably fuzzy. I hope Apple fixes this.

This guy says he contacted his carrier and they fixed it:

Other than that I haven't found much. I'd take it in if you don't find anything. Let the Apple Store switch it out for you.
