Ended up getting Might and Magic Clash of Heroes, and it turns out the game insists on stopping the podcasts I'm playing.
I hate this shit. Absolute deal-breaker for me.

Thanks to the EU commission, I now have a potential thread title for December.

"Bubblegum prices Get you down? Get inside and Get your iOS Christmas shopping done early!"

"Get all your free to play games here starting at $0.99 this holiday"

(F2P games are no longer allowed to be "Free" labelled, so Apple changed it to "Get".)

Gems of War is out worldwide. I think Pitta should play this version for at least 15 hours and tell us if it's still balanced without pay wall. :)

Ehehehe.
I'm still playing it daily...I'm well over 20/30 hours and it's still pretty awesome.
There where updates but I do not know what they changed (and no way I'll start again from scratch).
I'm full of gold and souls but finally the game is getting a bit harder so I'll decide where to invest those.
Also...now that more people are playing...the social aspect kicked in and it's pretty cool (you can be attacked or attack people for gold).
Not sure if they tweaked the first 20 levels, but I think not.
If anyone want to do a NeoGAF ingame guild I can help with my high level character....so they will earn even more money for a head start (or so I read, never bothered).

Me too. The game is great, and the IAP is painless. My favorite character so far is the fish, how he moves is hilarious too... saw your score on twitter... I have to get back on track but Kingdom Rush Origins doesnt let me... damn... also need to finish Sleep Attack TD (the powerups and limited towers per level are becoming tedious) first.

Crystal Siege HD just got a PG gold award.

I'd say if you're looking for tower defense, get that instead of KR:O

I wish I could... but soon -Christmas- when I get my hands on an iPad Air 2...

I like this one.

That would make a good december OT name, but I like Getium more.

Someone better register the domain "Getium" with Apple and fast... I wish I could but my Developers account end soon and I won't renew it (for iOS BETAS only is not worth it)

It really amuses me that people are advising others to skip KR:O without saying they don't actually like it, or giving impressions on it.

In the case of this post, I'd expect you to have finished both games, and explain why you advise people who enjoy TD games to skip KR:O (why it wasn't enjoyable), and why Crystal Siege replaces it entirely (does it provide like months worth of gameplay?). Why wouldn't you just get both if you like the genre, it's not like high-quality TD games come out every single day where you couldn't possibly fit both on your plate.

Honestly, I just 100% don't understand people who advise others to skip games, that are most likely good (especially if they haven't even played them). Why should people who like TD games not get KR:O? Even if it's just more of the same, if you like TD, that's probably good enough, unless there's some horrible pay-wall or other unlikely thing in it.

I've heard a lot of good things about Crystal Siege and probably will get it, but that was a disappointing review -- especially coming from PG. Not very informative.

Still, a Gold Award from a non-TD fan is impressive.

It's a great TD game. It's classic, doesn't really try to do anything new but it's insanely polished and playable without any IAPs.

If you're a fan of TD there's really little to no reason not to buy it.

Valiant heart is on sale. Well the base game is. Total game will cost you $11.

Think I might check it out. Hear it's pretty great.

I'm not a big fan of TD genre. I've played a few but none really grabbed me.

But I decided to try Kingdom Rush Origins anyway. After all, Google Play has this awesome feature that let's you try the game for two hours, so I thought why not.

After playing a few levels, I really like it, I think. Like I said, I have very little experience with TD, but here's my thoughts on why Kingdom Rush is considered top dog:

- It's easy to get into, but gets HARD pretty fast. This is probably because I suck at TD's, but I think the game will kick my ass pretty hard.
- There's something very distinct about the aesthetics. I really like the look of the game. It's simple, but charming. Same with the audio. Overall I think the presentation is very attractive, cohesive and polished, unlike a lot of generic looking games in the genre. Interface is very pleasant and polished too.
- There's a lot of micromanagement. Wow. You just don't stand idle for 10 seconds. There's always something to do. Always something to take care of. This is really different from the "set up and wait" flow I had with other games.
- Maps are very different, which makes you approach each level very differently too.
- Playing the same levels again with modifiers might be a great way to extend the length. You are not forced to do it though, so it doesn't feel like artificial padding, just more juice.

Maybe there's something else I can't define it yet, but these are the feelings this TD noob is having. Am I right or way off?

Shame there's only three heroes though. I know buying the others is not necessary, but they look so cool and must be pretty fun to play around too. A question by the way, are the heroes progressively better or just different from each other?

Also, I'm guessing the game plays much better on the iPad (I tried on a Galaxy S4).

^^ Good impressions. Google Play's 2 hour "trial" is awesome. If only they had all of the games there are on iOS, I'd be using that feature all the time.

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm digging Vainglory. I do agree that it isn't mind blowing graphics wise. There are definitely more showpiece games on the App Store.

That said, the gameplay is pretty fun. Biggest issue for me is that I don't always have a solid block of 20-30 min to get in a match.

Really enjoying the game too. Seems to have a great deal more depth to it than fates forever and the character designs are much better too!

Only issue is people being inactive during games. They need to add some punishment for this.

I use it all the time. I'm actually afraid Google will look at me and think I'm just abusing it, haha.

Solid impressions. I haven't had any issue with the difficulty so far (I am about 2.5 hours in), but I've played A LOT of the TD games including the past two KRs, so I have decent idea of the towers and their ideal placement.

I love the new environments with all the animation and all the pop culture and movie references. It's a blast.

In not in the mood to play another Kingdom Rush at the moment but, as a TD noob myself, I couldn't describe better what I felt about the original one (which I played to death back in the days).
Well done.

Get to Play title for the win.

I'm gonna be playing Gems of War all afternoon after I go "get" it. Pitta, let's get that guild going.

I also bought Crystal Siege over Kingdom Rush because of RPG elements. I haven't dived into it yet but I'm excited for it.

they are different. its usually just the dragon that is the OP noob mode.

haven't used them myself for origins but heroes tend to break down to;

- squishy ranged dps units that require micromanagement to be extremely deadly.
- tank units that are high health/armor/ or can self heal with abilities that slow enemy moment so your towers can wreck shop.
- support, which are units that buff nearby towers.

Was hoping for a recommendation from this thread.

I really enjoy Ipad games that are deep enough to get into but where I can also listen to a podcast or music in the background. I found FTL to be brilliant in this regard but after the 40th or so game I would quite like something new. Is there anything of this depth on the Ipad that also is not so story driven that I can listen to a podcast as I play it?

I'd highly recommend checking out XCOM. 110%

As someone who has played too much Dota 2, I agree totally. There really needs to be some way of penalizing players who quit or just don't play. Currently there is nothing that can affect your ability to play if you troll. Maybe extended queue timers or something, I don't know.

I'm... kind of in love with Vainglory, hehe. So good once you learn your way around. I highly recommend checking out the academy here:

http://academy.vainglorygame.com

The basics of the game are very well presented and explained there.

One thing that does impress me about vainglory is the sheer amount and quality of supplementary information. The built in videos are nice and to the point, helping newbs transition into the game pretty well.

The graphics aren't killer by any means, but I am amazed at the scalability. I play on an iPhone 6 and an iPad 3, both of which are smooth as butter!

I love having a 20 min moba on hand!

Edit: just went to play and I cannot connect to their servers. Not sure what the reason is, but I guess it is only a matter of time before DDOS attacks hit, like every other competitive game...

I'm still very new to iOS gaming but there are a few titles I'm keeping my eye on.

Is there a site (besides GAF, I guess) that's good to check for when games go on sale?

Download AppZapp (if it's still available) or AppShopper. Those help a lot.

Also wanted to mention since there's been a lot of TD talk. If you have an iPad, I highly recommend checking out Go Home Dinosaurs. It may look cute and kiddish (even says kids 9-11 on the app description), but it gets pretty challenging and some Tetris-style tower placement gives it an additional puzzle element. That along with controlling a gopher and managing tower cards makes it hectic and not easy to get all three "steaks" on every level.

Stumbled across it while deciding between Crystal Seige and KR:Origins and am glad I did. Also is on sale for a buck down from $4.99. It is iPad only though.

Exactly. And it's all integrated into the game. They even have videos showing how to play with each character, different builds, etc. As someone who knew absolutely nothing about MOBAs, I'm very grateful they made an extra effort to teach me.

As for disconnects, they say they are very committed with crearing new ways of eliminating it. So far threy implemented the karma system. If you finish a game (win, lose or surrender), you gain karma. If you disconnect, you lose karma.

Players with low karma will be likely matched against other low karma players. Also, the higher you karma, bigger are the discounts for buying characters and other stuff that is coming soon. It's not enough to solve the problem but it helps. I just think this needs to be communicated better to the player so he knows he will be penalized for disconnecting.

are there any great first person role playing games on iOS? something similar to eq?

Check out Ravensword Shadowlands. Also, Aralon: Forge and Flame is coming out within the next few months

For a sci-fi RPG, Exiles: Lost Colony is coming out before the end of the year

I just released my own game l've been working on for a few weeks as a hobby. I'm quite proud of what it turned out like actually! The strangest thing is, l'm probably most proud about the sounds l created (using GarageBand), usually l have no musical talent!

Anyway, the game is like find-a-word, except gravity comes into play. When you select a word, the letters above fall into it's place, meaning the whole board can change by just finding one word:

If you guys are into it, check it out:
AppStore:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lettermash/id909320306?ls=1&mt=8

And Iet me know what l can improve too!

How do you add bots in Vainglory? Fancied some off-line play practice but once I had selected my hero the game just started with empty teams.

So I just got ALONE about 15 minutest go and I am absolutely loving it. Definitely on my game of the year list.

The art is stunning and the music is mesmerizing. I just beat the first difficulty mode and holy cow was doing that a thrill ride!

Cally's Cave 3 coming in 2015
Cally’s Caves 3 is another chance for us to aspire to make the best platformer on iOS. We’ve taken a lot of the feedback we received from the first two games and are putting it to use while developing Cally’s Caves 3. The biggest change is that we are adding a new game plus mode, which will give players a lot more reasons to come back and keep playing. After finishing the campaign (124 levels or so), new game plus mode will open up. Another tier of weapon upgrades will open up, leading towards a god-tier final form for each weapon. Instead of just making new game plus be like the campaign again but harder, we are adding new enemies and weapon types into new game plus, and the one “true” story ending to the game will be at the end of the new game plus playthrough.

Games keep improving visually. Here's 1 & 2
