So hmmm, let's discuss the next Ascension tournament.

I like the pool play, but I think we're going to need some tweaking.

Balancing the pools a little better should be easy now that we have established some seeding from the first tournament.

Is there any way to set up the pool structure to make a tiebreaker less likely to be needed, without making it longer? I do think the tournament matches should be more definitive (maybe best of 3 games), but maybe not until we've thinned the field a bit to that point.

Also, maybe a good way to reward the pool winners is to give them a bye in the first round of the tournament by allowing the top 3 from each pool to advance to a tournament of 12, instead of running a 3rd place tournament to play in for the last seed like last time...does this make sense?

I guess I really need to win this game against SK then.

Has Big Daddy mentioned if they submitted the Eclipse update anywhere? Last update on their website is from May 9 but I thought I heard somewhere that the submission was imminent. Checking the bug/fix list still has me very concerned, however, as these are not crossed out:

- Resolving bankruptcy forces you to choose resources first
- Game log for multiplayer (I assume this means being able to see what your opponent did on their turn).

If after four months they finally release their mega-update and the game still isn't playable competitively I'm going to just delete it and move on.

Ok its been a week, any updates on some of these Summoner Wars games?

edit: NH too. Me and superrobot are at least a few turns into our game. Shouldnt take us long to finish.

Just found out about this solforge game. Played a few games and it seems good.

Doesn't explain a lot though. What are the factions for? Can you only include a certain number of factions in your deck?

I just don't really understand deck building at all.

You can only include up to 3 of each card in a deck, and only up to 2 factions.

There's a limited about of Synergy, but there's certain themes that you can go with. (e.g. robots/armor-heavy deck, or uterra zergrush/boost, or breakthrough direct damage, or whatnot)

Game with zero_sum is going steadily. It's FK vs vanguard so we're both a bit turtle-y.

Bonesquad and I going steady too. Seems like we're having a lot of actions that requires confirmation from the other player so it may be going a tad slower than usual. Almost done though.

For SolForge, Grimgaunt Predators have really won me over recently. At first I didn't think too much about them because it seemed like running into combat with them to force buff activations was really dumb to me, but once I realized that with a heavy removal deck I could just use mobility to place them in front my intended target and trigger the buff that way I gave them another shot. Their rank I is pretty easy to deal with but man rank 2/3 can take a lot of cards to deal with since I can usually get 2 activations off before he enters combat normally. I still have the Grimgaunt Devourers in my deck but I find myself playing them less unless I can quickly force 3+ activations on the same turn I play the Devourer.

Darkshaper Savant is another card I've been using more, and I think I like it more than the Scourgeflame Sorcerers I had in the deck. Free -3/-3 and -5/-5 spells at rank 2/3 are so good.

What's nice is both of those cards are heroic/rare respectively, which is much easier to get than their legendary counterparts for something I feel is a much more robust card.

Another card I'm considering adding in to my Nekrium deck is a single Gloomreaper Witch which happens to be the perfect counter for any pesky Oracles you may be facing.

Ray wins 13 to 10

Almost pulled the trigger on Trains today, but will probably let the world digest it for a few months. Afraid of it being a game you "solve" at the outset like Dominion, but that seems less likely given the board element. Theme is also a little dry. They should have called it supertrains or something and have trains with wings and maglev and the like.

Was this post supposed to go into the boardgame thread? Or is there an iOS version of trains? :p

Looks like SolForge 'drafting' will actually be similar to a sealed format instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fogTNqGni7E&t=187

The video is some short gencon footage and the section about drafting is basically you pick 2 cards each from 15 packs of 4 and that determines your deck. The first pack is a legendary/heroic (whatever 'higher rarity' stands for) of each faction and the factions chosen determine the factions you see in the remaining packs. It's meant for async play so you don't really interact with other players in a drafting pool. I assume it just keeps track of your drafted deck and then you play a set number of matches with it afterwards to determine rewards.

Anyone ever get a solforge online game to finish? I've always gotten disconnected after a couple turns and it will never reconnect.

Also a couple cards have what look like negative effects to bring thm into play like, sacrifice a creature, you can click cancel to skip the sacrifice. Is this intended? I know there are situations where it would be beneficial to sac a creature but that doesn't seem the intent to me.

There's a couple of bugs currently in Solforge.

You can play Tech Armour n any creature, rather than robots only, which makes the card better than it should be.

If you select quick play, unlike previous versions where if you had chosen 'random deck' for your opponent it would randomly select another deck. Now it just replays the first random deck you got forever, which makes the quick play function a bit useless right now.

SW: Bonesquad/justjeff defeats Slacker. Good game. Both sides were Dwarfs:) I got lucky that I drew a wall right after you destroyed mine.

I've been up in Canada which means I turn off my cellular data and rely on wifi, and for some reason lately my phone won't stay connected. I'm trying to keep an eye on that.

This has to be a bug. Playing a corpse crawler without having to sacrifice another card seems to make it way overpowered to me.

Yeah there are definitely bugs. Hopefully they get them sorted before they roll out the tournament stuff. I don't know how OP the tech armor is though. I've cut it from my deck but then again I run mostly bots so the marginal benefit of the glitch was minimal for me. Maybe it's amazing in other decks but I haven't really seen anyone running it.

I just really want them to get the other modes going. Mostly stomping people in random matches (though the occasional losses are still quite interesting and eye-opening).

More SolForge stuff: http://www.forgewatch.com/the-solforge-report-8-21-2013/#comment-413

Stuff I found interesting in no particular order:

•Tournament tickets for Constructed and Drafting should be added to the Daily Log-in rewards when it becomes available
•Tournament tickets will also be rewards for doing Tournaments and Drafts.
•You should be able to buy Tournament tickets with Gold and possibly with Silver. If they are bought with Silver any rewards will not be tradeable.
•Drafts will not require any booster packs to enter. They will cost tournament tickets or something equivalent to them.
•When you are done you will earn rewards based on your individual performance. There will be no overall winner of the draft.
•You will get to keep all the cards you gain during the draft. If it was a free ticket from a daily or otherwise not paid for with Gold the cards will not be tradeable.

So if you've been holding onto your booster packs then worry not, because the only thing they're good for is opening.

On another note, I created a free account to see how bad it was and without an influx of boosters you're pretty limited in what you can do to start. The split faction starter decks are pretty terrible and clearly inferior to the original single faction starter decks that were available in the closed beta. I played some random online matches with both decks and tried to create my own as well but lost every time. Starting with 16 total rare/heroic cards split between all 4 factions is a pretty shitty way to start your collection, but the real problem is that their starter decks don't really have much synergy. It's almost like a random collection of commons and generic rares/heroics were selected to create the deck.

Pfft! You kept starting battles taking off 2-3 HP and I could do nothing about it. I was just trying to stop you from killing my HQ, but last battle it happened anyway:(

I just want the game to work. Haha.

I have like 8 or 10 games going right now and it says its my turn in 90% of then, but I can't do anything when I join the game.

I'm sure it works better on PC, but I just want to play it on my iPad.

There's less bugs on PC (like skip-to-sacrifice mentioned above), and timed play seems to work fine (at least for me). Async is terrible though.

Edit: it's also faster on PC, especially the deck builder as well as playing against hard AI.

Yeah, its pretty slow on iPad, it drives me crazy sometimes. All around its just a pretty shitty app, haha. The game is pretty decent though, I really like how they give out so many silver coins, so I can get some new cards everyday, I would just get a lot more cards if I could actually take my turns.

I love the everflame phoenix. Such an awesome legendary.

So i still don't know where my starter decks are

You should probably talk to support about that. What did you back at?

edit: Wait you have or don't have them?

So somehow me and smiley have 46 normal boosters instead of the 20 youre supposed to have at 60. And all the starter decks. Apperently logging into the steam version causes you to get double rewards?

the 60 tier. I have my $70 in credit, but no starters selectable in the select deck menu.

EDIT: Me and Smiley figured out that the cards we have are from the beta split factions deck. Im missing the specific 2 faction decks.

Yeah definitely talk to support. You should be able to see all the ones listed here + two more since they gave all backers $25+ a set of each faction starter in addition to the 2 they chose. e.g. you should have the cards for 6 faction specific starters, 2 factions being duplicates.

Email on the site is support@stoneblade.com

It will probably be awhile before other modes are ready, considering they just released the open beta. A good start would be for async games to work properly though, so it would be possible to get games with friends going. And hopefully they'll be able to do some better matchmaking or at least have non-heroic (rare and common cards only) matches as options.

That wasn't me...

Im trying really hard to figure out how to play Mountain Vargath effectively. I really enjoy their pack-like style, but I end up fucking myself over more often than not, since my summoner gets put into much riskier positions more often.

I also made some REALLY bad miss moves in a game against tm, and left my summoner sitting in front of his champ 2 turns in a row, haha. One time I accidently moved him forward and back, then the next game I tried moving too many dudes and ended up fucking myself over.

Sorry TM! I will try to make the next one a little more competitive :p

Is this why I can never complete an online game, because I'm trying from my iPad?

Fun game though, anyone know of any other good tcg on iOS? I can't get enough of them

I backed shadow era but haven't played in like a year. I still have tons of credit. That game could have been good but last I played it was pretty unbalanced

Online Solforge is borked for me on PC and iPad. Shame, been enjoying playing it vs the AI. Don't think I would drop money on packs though.

There's lots of info in the latest Solforge report:

Next Update

Kibler mentioned that the next major update should include Tournament Play (Drafting and Constructed), Matchmaking, and possibly a small set of newer cards. Rumors from GenCon suggest this is currently planned for September, but as Kibler said on the stream “It will be released when it is done”.

After that, the next goal is to start working on Trading /Auction House, iPhone update, and Silver rewards. Android and Campaign mode are still scheduled for the end of this year. There isn’t any word on when achievements will be updated.

Trading

Full trading is still a few months off, but StoneBlade has said they want people to be able to do something with their extra cards before that. Once again, they have promised this very soon, so hopefully we will see something in the next update. It will be some form of trading up and/or selling back.

Campaign Mode

It will most likely not be ready until the end of this year.
They are currently looking at an “energy” or “gating” system to limit progress per day.
Achievements and completing quests will give you very specific rewards, not just Silver/Gold/Packs.
Raid Bosses for Co-op mode will most likely not be available when it is released.

And more, including an interview with Justin Gary:

http://www.forgewatch.com/the-solforge-report-8-21-2013/

Edit: also for the new page, there's a list of known issues at the Solforge forum:

I think the number of legendaries, and their power level, is too highto be frank in Solforge. 18% of the set is legendary, and their drop rate is ludicrously low outside of the premium packs which cost £5 per pack. Additionally, too many of the legendaries just seem to be 'amazing card you will put in every deck' rather than specialised cards that fit well into some decks (which is what most of Magics equivalents are).

Just feels too pricey for me currently, and too much towards 'rarer is better'. I kick started for $100 as well so started with 60 or so normal boosters and only have 8 legendaries I think in total including the faction starters.

Brakara

Member
Yet, in the latest tournament that was played, the sets from the top 10 players only contained 10% legendary cards (3 per player). I don't think you'll see much success from people who have decks filled with 3-of of only legendaries and heroics compared to more diverse and focused decks.

Maledict

Member
I'm not saying they would. A deck full of legendaries would be junk generally. What I am saying is that their rarety and power level generally means that someone with 3 of a set of a legendary is going to have a huge advantage over someone who doesn't due to their sheer power level, and because their are so many of them its incdibly hard without spending tons of cash to get a play set.

Sme of the legendaries really shouldn't be - it feels like they were put at that level just because they were in the starter decks. Utteran Packmaster and Fireblade Champion, a good solid cards that should be more accessible to players than they are and certainly don't 'feel' legendary - unlike say Souldrinker, or the Undying guy.

On a more positive note, my vote for most powerful overlooked card definitely goes to Seismic Adept. That card on its own completely changes the battlefield and allows you to totally dominate an opponent.

Brakara

Member
Yeah, obviously the more legendaries you have the more options you have as well. But it's a difficult balancing act I guess; if you make it too easy to get these for free (or make them less powerful), then why would anyone buy anything?

How are other F2P card games handling this (like Magic Online or Hearthstone) ?
