Pyrokai said:Couple (hopefully) quick questions. I posted this in the iOS thread but I think it was passed by and forgotten
In iOS, if you do a Google search or find a place via the Maps app (or another app that supports it), is there a button that says "navigate" or something that will bring up a turn-by-turn GPS app? Android did this very well and would be a feature I miss.
Also, if you try to perform an action that can be done with one or more apps, does iOS ask you which app you want to use? I can think of an example, again with directions, where I click on an address in the Android Browser, and a dialog box pops up asking which app I want to use to view the address, and it was unlimited. It gave me the option of "Browser", "Google Maps", or "Waze", which are three apps I had that could navigate OR display addresses. Just wondering if iOS can do this.
My last question is about file systems. Is it true that I'll have zero access to my phone's file system? So that means I'm completely unable to use an iPhone as a USB thumb drive, correct? I'm assuming there are also no apps on the App Store that allow you to have access to this either, right? Just wanting to make sure there is NO WAY I can drag and drop files from my computer to my phone without iTunes.

An iMessage text is always free of charge (insert disclaimer for data usage rates).hayguyz said:I've got a message about iMessage.
Does the messages have to be sent to the Apple ID to be free? Or can two people with iOS 5 send messages to each other's number and still be free?
My wife just got her first smartphone and I'm trying to understand the usage details.
Sean said:There is no turn-by-turn GPS app built into iOS - there are third party apps you can get from the App Store, but they aren't integrated with the OS. Apple is working on their own maps stuff so there's a decent chance of turn-by-turn coming at some point (probably iOS6 next year), but nobody knows for sure when that is.
As for the second question, no again. It uses the default apps that Apple created - click a phone number and it'll launch Phone, an address would launch Google Maps, etc..
Not sure about the file system question.

No, even though one Apple Store guy told me they could swap it in-store a few others have subsequently told me that they can't in fact do that. I probably could if I pushed enough but I think the universe is telling me to stop being such a pussy and be happy with my original choice. I did get a white bumper, though!Shurs said:Did you end up swapping your 4S for a white model?
I agree. All of my gadgets are black. I went with white just for a change. Both options are super slick though.Bgamer90 said:But I think a good part of it also has to due with the fact that all of my phones in the past have been black and therefore I'm tired of that color.
That's what I saw here in New York as well. Along with hundreds of Chinese people trying to buy tons of them at a time.Gary Whitta said:BTW in my experience today at several stores the white is by far the more popular model, so people who are getting it because they think it's going to stand out more in a crowd are probably in for a letdown. BLACK IS THE NEW WHITE!

It's way faster, the basic apps are far more useful, and the virtual keyboard is a non issue. Great, great phone.
Bahahaha. That's awesome.Gary Whitta said:Actually what finally swayed me off the white iPhone today was outside the Apple Store while we were looking for one for my girlfriend. There was a guy who'd just bought one standing outside playing with it. It was a white model and he absolutely one of the douchiest looking posers I've ever seen in my life. And I live in San Francisco.

::shrug shoulders::
I think they should dump the numbers and have names for the future iphones.
ReconYoda said:Its the 6th iphone but according to the way they are naming, it would be the 5.
Zefah said:No, according to the way they are naming it, it would be iPhone 6. iPhone 4 was the fourth phone and it debuted iOS 4. The next iPhone will be the sixth phone, and the 4S already debuted iOS 5.

Joe Shlabotnik said:We don't really know what their naming method is yet. They elected not to call the second-generation iPhone 2 or 2G for obvious reasons (confusing with its 3G capability). The improved revision was the 3GS. When it came time for a major re-design in the iPhone 4, it happened to be both the fourth version overall and an appropriate number for the "next-generation" iPhone. We don't really know which of these was the naming convention they used.
ReconYoda said:I agree its too early to tell, but i highly doubt they go from 4S to 6. I think they either go iPhone 5 or do away with number all together.

Your theory falls apart with the iPhone 3G.

Honestly, neither of us have compelling arguments for the next phone being named (or not being named) the iPhone 5.
