I keep seeing people say this but it never is close to the truth. Much like the wii, Marketshare seems to be meaningless here.

Well it's only started to surpass iOS in sales now, but iOS installed base is still bigger.

In 2/3 years it's all about Android.

I know you are good PC folk Stew.

Ofc it has the fastest CPU now, but is it really that much faster even? Also there are better things on the way already.

The rest of the 4S is really disappointing, no expendable memory again, small lcd screen. Even the big improvement, the 8 megapixel camera isn't amazing anymore, since it's been done.

This 4S just doesn't scream high tech like the S2 did, or the iPhone 4.
The CPU is about the same speed as all high end phones (a dual core cortex a9) and the GPU is twice as fast as your GSII.

I can understand how some people can be disappointed in the 3.5" display, but did you really expect expandable memory? That expectation should never be there in the first place with Apple.

The camera isn't all about megapixels. It's about a better lens, a bigger aperture, better low light (noise) performance, low shutter lag, fast start up time, face detection and so on. I actually would have preferred if they kept the sensor at 5MP to get even better low light performance since phone sensors are still really small.

It's been a long while actually. But so many of those phones have jank specs.

I don't see it happening anytime. Like Qub said, no one buys apps on android in comparison.

Whenever someone tries to throw the android Marketshare stats at me, they get a "how's that working out for ya?" in return.

I still think the iPhone 4 is great so seeing an S version is good to me, also impressed that the A5 chip is in with the same sort of battery time, so far.

This also gives me time to finish up my galaxy ace contract and buy an iPhone 5 next year :P

exactly. marketshare won’t be the metric that determines when or if Android will leapfrog iOS in developer support.

utilization and developer revenues will determine that.

most people using Android don’t pay for apps. they just use the web and expect most things to be free. it’s something that Google (or another app store holder like amazon) would need to address. But Google is in the business of selling ads so they won’t bother.

Could be true guys, could turn out to be true.

I'd rather have superior tech and open platform then play by apples rules.

Tech isn't superior (points to linked benchmarks), platform is more open means...what?

If by superior tech you mean 4G capability with hardly any coverage and terribly draining batteries due to power hungry screens and 4G antennas and beefy processors against an unoptimized operating system...you make a compelling argument!

How has the online pre-order been done in the past? Is it first thing friday morning (12:01am pacific time), or sometime during the day?

Have you seen AMOLED? LCD is like a dinosaur compared to it. Not to mention that the screen itself is tiny, iphone 4 next to S2 looks like a girls phone.

And open platform means you can just plug it into any PC anywhere without the need to install bloatware from apple to manage whats on your phone. Just plug it in, drag stuff onto it, done.

Open also means I can choose where to buy stuff, and am not constricted to what apple deams as OK or suitable.

I would think iPhone 5 will have a better larger screen, 1gb ram, A6, new design, this S upgrade is still rather good even if it sounds simple imo.

A5 will only be gpu king for a short while. Tegra 3 is on the horizon. Its an easy move for them. Still cutting edge-ish, but with the best camera phone in america. is enough upgrade for most people.

The S is for sirii, icloud intergration and iOS 5. This is probably the most mature product apple has released. Next iPhone will be less conservative. The software is going to sell the hardware.

They obviously saved everything for next years iPhone, watching the keynote was sad, they were trying desperately to justify a 1.5 year wait for an iPhone 4 with an a5 chip.

I'd rather have superior tech and a huge app selection with a thriving gaming community.

So it's iOS for me.

But I guess have fun with that bigger screen. Pointless without content, but to each their own.

before the event i couldn't think of much about my iphone 4 which i particularly wanted upgrading, and it seems apple felt the same way. this is a good thing! the 4S looks great, and yet i have little desire to make an irrational upgrade.

iPhone 5 is due first quarter 2012 with similar specs but case redesign and better battery tech.

This was told to me by one of my ex students in Taiwan who's father works for Foxconn in Tucheng. Production is well under way.

When I was teaching in Taiwan the same kid had an iPhone 3 dummy (as used in phone shops) about 3 weeks before the global launch.

S2 is man's phone. iPhone 4 is girl's phone. Why? Size.

Therefore: iPad 2 is man's tablet. Just about every other tablet is girl's tablet. Why? Size.

Size of the screen is a silly argument. It's a preference, not an indisputable benefit. Some people would say that having a Retina display is more important than having a big screen. It's a preference. When Apple doesn't have to compromise their Retina specification and a bigger screen makes sense, they'll update it. Hell, it looks like the 5 may be that.

So you hate iTunes is what your argument comes down to for "open"? iOS devices are PC free at this point, and if you really want all that fun functionality, you can jailbreak them. This is no different than Android folks rooting their phones to do things it's not supposed to do. Android phones are locked in some capacity as well. I'm sure a lot of people consider the interfaces handset makers put on their Android phones "bloatware" and therefore they need to install custom roms to get rid of them.

Apple makes it the most convenient to buy from them, I'm not going to argue against that. It's true. To me that's a perk. To you it's a terrible travesty. To each his own.

What a compelling argument . . . The iPhone looks like a GIRL'S phone. Oh my god, not a GIRL'S phone! How demasculating for all of us MANLY MEN. I'd HATE for someone to think I have a vagina and not an awesome PENIS.
What an idiot.
Also, you might want to check out a little process known as jailbreaking. Kind of makes your "open platform" look limiting. If I want to transfer stuff to and from my iPhone? Wireless transfer. Want stuff from outside of the App store (which dominates your App store, by the way, thus negating the need for doing that usually)? Cydia. Huge community of devs ( omg . . . XDA devs too! Wow!). No need for Apple's approval.
And don't let me hear you whine about how you shouldn't HAVE to jailbreak to get more functionality. Android users have to root in order to do a lot of things (including some basic things, like watching Netflix on a tablet up until recently).
Bottom line: you keep yours and I'll keep mine, and everybody should STFU, lol. Until you are paying for my phone and bill, I don't give a shit about what you think I should have.

EDIT: New phone's specs look great, but I won't be buying another iPhone until the screen is larger. Hope the 5 touts at least a 4" screen.

I see that it has "assisted gps", was that explained in the conference? I was hoping for a bit more in the way of navigation software from Apple.

Also, I hope that we can change the voice of the AI in Siri. But I have a feeling that I'm asking too much.

I'd like to know as well. I am going to be at a concert Thursday night and would rather not be worrying I am not going to get in.

Assisted GPS to refers to using cell towers to triangulate your location in addition to having a GPS unit built into the device itself. Allows for faster triangulation.

Nothing in terms of built-in GPS still unfortunately. 3rd party apps in the store have you covered for a one time cost, though. Not ideal, but there's options.

Things I've seen posted online say midnight Pacific.

Yeah but jealbreaking would lead not to being able to enjoy the one good thing about them, the games on the apple store no?

What an idiot.

I guess you are sexually insecure if my outspoken male heterosexuality and masculinity offends you pink hitler. But I'm not gonna mask it just cause you have a vagina. I'm really tired of this feminine oppression where I have to be ashamed to be a man.

Awesome. Opinions of phones = masculinity milestones.

The Wii (Android) has no games (apps)!!!! This is truly the next iteration of console wars.

Jailbreaking does not affect any of the built in functionality of the phone unless you want it to, so you're not cut off from iTunes or the App Store in any way.

We're basically all nerds (of varying capacities) with too much time on our hands. We've got to argue about pointless shit that no one else really cares about otherwise we'll get bored ourselves!

Dude, he read into it. Not me. I just said it looked like a girls phone. He made it about how awesome PENIS (which he bolded since it's a big issue apparently to him) are. So obviously he is reading into it too much.

I just said it looks like a girls phone.

O cool. Can you still get iOS updates? This might be something I'd do when the iPhone 5 comes then.

Welp, aside from some kind of act of god I will not be getting this now. Verizon will not budge at all in letting me upgrade my contract early, my date is February 2012. By then I may just wait for the next iPhone, or go Android again. Dammit Verizon, why'd you do away with early upgrades?

When you factor in the iPod Touch and the iPad, iOS is still ahead in sales, IIRC.

iOS updates will "break" the jailbreak, so the jailbreak community usually hangs back on older versions until the newer versions are jailbroken. This can be anywhere from days to weeks to months depending on the releases.

Can't just install any updates as they come in without affecting the jailbreak, though. At the mercy of the jailbreakers to get it done...but they are a pretty awesome community.

Ok. Thanks for the info, sounds pretty good.

Good point :) Well it will take even longer then.

He was saying that android would have the games locked up soon because of Marketshare.

Obviously that has not been the case for android or the wii so it was a valid comparison. But you already knew that.

No one said android or wii "had no games".

How does that matter? You said it looked like a girls phone, then went off on a nonsensical, personal-attack laden rant when challenged on the opinion. Saying it looks like a "girl's phone" is supremely weird to begin with. Why does it? How does it look more feminine than any other smartphone?

Why the fuck does any of that matter? Do you need a phone that scream "masculine?" Why?

And don't forget hyperbole, the secret sauce in these debates.

No one said android or wii "had no games".

So when you said "without content" you were using the secret sauce?

Well Wii is not an ideal comparison, since it's hardware sucks and it's marketed towards soccer moms and kids.

Android is for everyone and has cutting edge hardware.

No the top of the line android phones have good tech. The rest and by far the best selling have shit tech. Another reason devs aren't jumping in. Too many form factors/chipsets.

Wii is a perfect comparison as they had the overwhelming Marketshare and it translated to nothing in terms of dev support compared to the PS360. Just like android.

VanMardigan said:

In comparison, obviously. Just like the wii. He was making tech the most important feature. I'd say it was content.

I didn't think twelve year olds were allowed on GAF.

at least in the US, the top-selling Android phones are also the most expensive.

i don't know about globally but the galaxy s and now S2 seem to be picking up some big market share

Hey guys, if I have an iPad with Skype, does that make me the manliest of all?

Screen size doesn't have anything to do with whether or not a phone appears masculine or feminine. It's about the quantity of glitter that comes out when you shake it.

Individually sure. Add up all the low end or free androids now.

Sorry? I'm not following.

Edit: Oh, I see I've fallen victim to a good old "no, you!". How will I ever recover from a wound so grievous? Your wit continues to impress, especially against those of us with emasculating phones. Mine isn't even 3.5"!

oh, i didn't know 'best selling models' meant 'cumulative of worst selling models'

there is obviously a huge market for high end android phones and devs would obviously point their apps that that portion of the market.

just like apple devs. do you think the $0 3GS buyers are going to be buying infinity blade 2?

We're talking Marketshare. It's cumulative by default.

Infinity Blade is the highest end of app. 3GS' can still play the vast lion share of the content.

It's all pointless until the data shows android users begin to buy apps.
