1. Does the white model smudge or discolor easily?

2. Those of you who go caseless, is the screen pretty resistant to scratching?

3. Did the VZW internet speeds increase or just ATT's? (I don't know what HSDPA is)
No. Glass
Yes. I still use a monoprice protector because I'm anal.
No, just AT&T.

I can do that? :o

watch out. Apple has already wiped out one set of iCloud backups in the beta and they may do it again before the 12th.

I'm on iOS5 and i'm using itunes backups till next week.

So what's the deal with Bluetooth 4.0? Does it require a 4.0 headset to get the advantages? I have the new Mac Mini and still get audio that's out of sync. I'd like to pick up a wireless headset to use with the iPhone4S. They all work with VoiceControl/Siri or should I be looking for a special bullet point on the specs list?
For the new page. Does anybody use a Bluetooth headset with their current phone? It's okay to admit it, not everyone will think you're a douche.

Yeah. Assuming they don't wipe any iCloud restores or something like that once the official release is out there.

The first thing your phone prompts you for when you get a new one with iOS5 on it is your iCloud information so you can restore from a backup if you have one. It's like instantly getting all the crap from your old phone in exactly the same way onto your new device.

I asked earlier and didn't get a response, how are they going to handle pre-orders? Do we have to pay full price for the pre-order, or do they just take our information and hold a phone for us?

Sorry if this has been answered: When would my next upgrade cycle be if I were to upgrade my iPhone 4 that I purchased on launch day for the iPhone 4S? I'm grandfathered on ATT, which I believe has allowed me to upgrade to a new iPhone every year.

I'm basically asking whether I'd be eligible to upgrade to an iPhone 5 if it were to come out next summer if I got the iPhone 4S.

Potentially. What's your monthly bill look like? Seems like if you're at or above $100 a month they are a lot faster and looser on the upgrade cycles.

About $188 due to family plan with 4 lines.

Hmm...not sure how they treat family plan lines since you have multiple devices. I'd imagine that money diluted over 4 devices would put you under their threshold for earlier upgrades, but I'm not speaking from any kind of actual information, just speculating.

If you pre-order online, you'll input all of your information, including credit card, and it'll get charged with the phone ships.

I'm satisfied with my iPhone 4. I feel that it's more than capable and looks identical to the 4S.

Unless I missed something?

I'm glad I'm on the OG cycle. 2G >>> 3G >>>> 4 >>>> 5 is the way to go!

I actually end up using that voice+data a lot cuz my mom calls me to ask questions that require googling, and she doesn't google, so it's on me. I wonder how rare I am of a usage case example.

The correct cycle is and was: 3G to 3GS to 4 to 4S to 5.

3G introduced the App Store and 3G wireless
3GS improved the performance across the board over the 3G and video recording
4 introduced even greater performance and FaceTime
4S improved the performance across the board over the 4 and improved the camera
5 will have a puppy generator and BJ simulator

That's pretty much the same situation I'm in. We're grandfathered in as well, but when my 3GS was stolen and I wanted to get a new iPhone, they wouldn't let me upgrade at all even though my next available one was less than six months away. :/ I ended up having to convince another family member to let me use their upgrade. Maybe I just had a strict service rep. I might try a different AT&T store if I get the 4S. Obviously that generous family member will be getting a free iPhone 4 if I do upgrade. To me, an upgrade is worth more than the price of a new phone.

3GS had voice commands.

4S has Siri.

5S has ...

Maybe they'll save the BJ simulator for the 5S and the 5 will just be another spec bump, form factor update and LTE?

Looks like I'll wait until the 5 to upgrade

I'm thinking something more voice oriented.
Hmm...Siri Sexual Assistant? It'll dirty talk with you and have downloadable speech packs for different fetishes?

I want one, but there's nothing I crushingly need. I think this might be the first iPhone that I don't get on day one.*

*I say that only because I'm doing an all-day charity thing on the same day it comes out so it's tricky for me to get it. If I can figure out a way to get it I will, otherwise I'll wait.

Can't wait to pre-order. I've been waiting for an iPhone for years, but was stuck waiting for Verizon. My original Droid has been running like shit for a couple months, so this can't come soon enough.

An iPhone 5 will never exist. 4S is the iPhone 5, 3GS was the iPhone 3. The next will be iPhone 6.

They will definitely not jump to the iPhone 6 without an iPhone 5. Zero percent chance! (MARK THE DATE!).

I predict the next one will be the 5 or they will just simply switch to something like iPhone and iPhone Pro to match the Mac line (and iPads will follow suit...or possibly introduce the product convention).

The first time I did this was magical - I wanted to run up to Steve Jobs and give him a big hug. I'm actually doing it right now with the GM release, as well.

What would the 5 even mean then?

I'm still hoping for HTC style names. iPhone Terrific has a nice ring to it.

It just means "the next iPhone". Apple definitely are in a naming convention hell right now.

iPhone! Cool
iPhone 3G! Ok
iPhone 3GS! Hmm...alright
iPhone 4! Alright, back on track, 4th iPhone!
iPhone 4S! Huh? Oh...

So now it's 5's turn. The number has never meant the iteration of the phone itself except in the case of the iPhone 4. I was so happy when they named it the iPhone 4 because it made sense. They should have just went with "5" then "6" then "7" from there if they were going to stick with numbers.

The reason not to may actually be more of a consumer incentive thing. If you have an iPhone 4, nothing would make you angrier than an iPhone 5 coming right behind it. If they release an iPhone 4S...you're like "Oh...that's fine. Just a little bit better than what I have". If you see "5"..you're like "OH FUCK THAT! I JUST BOUGHT THE FOUR!"

Naming is all bonkers, though.

I used to before my car had Bluetooth built into it. I may even consider going back to one if I can control my phone using it with Siri since my car doesn't seem to access the voice controls of the iPhone.

No ones will. You have to hold down the home button, then your car will access it. Same deal with any bluetooth headset/car

Will Apple announce the preorder time sometime before Friday? I have seen in places they have done so before and was wondering if this was standard for them to do it. Also, what has preordering from Apple's site been like before? Is it like trying to get an HP Touchpad when they were put up where the whole site crashes in seconds, or is it more like smooth sailing that as long as you get on the site in the first few hours you'll be fine?

Bask in the glory of my upgrade.

Fuckin' love the v3xx. The only thing that got me to upgrade to the iPhone was the better camera/HD Video, otherwise I'd probably still be on the V3xx.

I've seen 12AM Pacific...not sure where they sourced it from though now that I think about it :P

Can't we just get over the fucking naming conventions at this point?

I hope the next iPad is called the 2S just to piss off everybody.

That works for me if true seeing as how I will be out that night and 2am is probably close to when I'll get home (2am here, not on the west coast). What about the ordering experience? Have you ever gone through the iPhone preorder experience before?

iPad Nano...but it looks exactly the same and has improved specs.

I went through the sites at the time, but didn't go through with the pre-order since I was on vacation at the time and actually decided to hold out in hopes of them having white iPhones in the stores (this was debunked later, but I lost anyways).

The servers get HAMMERED so I remember you had to constantly refresh and retry in attempts to get.

No! I want an iPad 3 not a 2S!!! Despite the fact that it will have a retina display, an A6 chip, updated cameras, iOS 5.X, incredible battery life, and listed as iPad 3,1 on all iOS 5 betas...it's gotta have a 3 on the retail box otherwise I'll just wait another year or two...or at least until the 2Ss

Is there a dedicated Ipod Touch thread? I saw one for iphone and ipad but missed one for itouch. So I'll ask here: Is the ipod touch not getting upgraded to the 4S equivalent?

I'm sold on the phone as an upgrade from 3GS. Still trying to decide which carrier to use. I'm grandfathered into AT&T unlimited data for $30/month, so that's probably the default option...

IT HAS TO LOOK DIFFERENT SO PEOPLE WILL KNOW I HAVE A BETTER THING THAN THEY DO

That sucks and I hate it when stuff like that happens. I know Verizon are doing some presales on their site because when I called to get my account password changed there was an automated message talking about it. Seemed funny because you know every soccer mom who heard about the 4S called in to ask for one. My experience with Verizon's website and just Verizon in general has almost always been shit, so I will avoid them in all circumstances unless I have to go to a store. I know the Apple store here is off limits. We only have one, and that place is always packed. I went in there to get my Macbook checked out and there were about 50 people in there and it was a random Thursday afternoon. Also, they have more employees working at any one time then they do customers. The Apple store is seriously one of my most hated shopping experiences, and I avoid it like the plague.

iPod touch has the same innards of last year's model. I think they updated the light sensor and the way they coat the product (and a white model).

iOS 5 is really the main feature of the iPod touch especially with iMessage.

Dang. Guess I'll stick with my 3rd gen touch then and hold out till next year.
