How long have you had it? iP4 had a yellow tint problem from the screen bonding process, and it goes away after a while, however I'm pretty sure if you go to an apple store they will swap it out for you, just to put you at ease. As to the static, perhaps it is your provider? I can't imagine the call quality has changed that much from my 4(AT&T), but maybe they changed that with the S.
Had it for a week, the yellow tint may go away but the static I doubt. I'm on the biggest carrier in Sweden so I don't think it's that. The only other one I know with a 4S on my network has not experienced anything like it. Also it seems to be an issue for people from other countries as well.

Will just have to wait and see what their conclusion is, hopefully I'll get a phone without the static. Won't accept a phone where the primary function produces static. The yellowish tint I can accept if it fades with time.

How do you log in to an existing Instapaper account with the instapaper app? I try to log in and it tells me to enter a password to set up a new account. My account has no password.

Is there any way to view youtube videos at higher quality on the 4s? I always seems to default to the lowest setting and I don't see an option to for higher quality.

Using the YouTube default app you get HQ videos when you are connected via Wifi. If you're using 3G then it's automatically low quality, you can't change this.

But you can go to m.youtube.com in Safari and that will allow you to watch YouTube videos in HQ over the 3G network.

Well didn't take long to run into some bugs!

App is the eReader called Stanza. Its a freebie. Are there some good alternatives?

Yeah, Stanza is officially broken as of 5.0. Amazon recognized a better product so instead of competing with it, they bought it and shut it down.

Yes, you can drop your own content into iBooks. Just drag anything you want into iTunes, it'll sync up.

Like into iTunes proper or into the file sharing list on the Apps pane of the device menu?
Because iBooks is not appearing in the file sharing list.

Whoa holy shit, that was awesome just figured it out. :o

My friend got that same error yesterday on her 3GS. It's probably iOS5 related, but in any case not specific to the 4S.

Edit: Beaten.

Just sent a text with Siri. :o

HEHEHEHEHE this look bookshelf is full of fantasy novels now.

Do I still have to use some stupid app like itoner or whatever to make my own ringtones?

I seem to have run into a problem with my 4s battery, I've had it about two weeks and don't really think its been draining too quick so far, but last night, I took it off charge and set my alarm and put it on the bedside table, went to sleep and got really confused when I woke up late with no alarm and my phone apparently acting like a brick.

It seems it ran from 100% - 0% in standby mode overnight (about 6 hours?!). Shall I try getting a replacement? I got it on contract upgrade from three mobile (uk) and I can't remember what it said about faulty returns. There was this little card that said something about taking it to an apple store for faults I think, but I threw it away and can't remember. If anyone has any experience, it's sure to be easier to find out on here rather than phoning their god awful customer service! (three I mean, never dealt with apples Customer service).

I just received my ipsilon feather case and it is so good to hold, not much protection from drops though but I hate those bulky cases.

People who are having battery issues should really check the way locations and notifications are set up. I remember having issues on my iPad when I upgraded to iOS5, but after checking locations, I noticed there was one setting that was CONSTANTLY paging the locations service. Turning that ability off fixed it up.

Go to:
Settings -> Locations.

There you'll see a list of applications and whether locations is turned off or on. More importantly, you'll see an icon (little triangular arrow head) that will indicated whether an app has used location in the last 24 hours (grey) or currently using it (purple).

MORE IMPORTANTLY:

right at the bottom of the list is an area called "System Services". Now in here, are a bunch of system-level services that may use location. Depends on the device you have, but my "Setting Time Zone" was constantly using location, thus paging my Wifi, and potentially a GPS if you have it. This drained the battery.

You can turn off the location service, or alternatively, turn off the time zone by location feature (which is what I did - went to Time & Date -> switched odd set time zone by location), and the little purple arrow goes away on the Setting Time Zone.

also important - at the bottom of the System Services location pane, by default the status bar icon that should notifiy you of location paging for the system-level services is actually set to off - thus if the system uses location, it will not tell you. I turned this on.

Isn't there a way to queue songs into an instant playlist or before it goes to shuffle? I think it was an old iPod feature? Just wondering if the 4s can do it.

That is a little too quick for battery drainage while in sleep mode.

In the UK you get one year warranty with Apple where you can get an exchange for faults in the first year. Not sure on Apple Store's stock for replacements.

What's your reception like? If the phone is struggling for reception then the phone will use more power to get a signal.

Apple are aware of a battery problem and there will be a fix in the next software update. Run more tests if you can.

Yeah, my dad's 4s has been having the same issue. I've tried turning off bluetooth, wi-fi, and a few of the location services he doesn't need, but doesn't seem like the battery is lasting any longer. 3G reception seems great (usually shows 5 bars) so doesn't seem like that's an issue. Only thing I've left to try is see if completely draining the battery helps as some are saying.

Just took it for a jog. Siri don't work once. :(
It said I had no data connection but I totally did. Great phone though.

Also, is this thing seriously going to ask me to sign up for gamecenter everytime I play a game? I don't want to use it. Where can I disable it?

Its supposed that the unlocked version of 4s releases in america in november, but I would like to know if theres some king of realeas day yet. Im going to New York from 11th of novemeber to 21st and I would like to know the possibilites of being released during that time.

My 4s uses about 5% when I sleep with Wi-Fi on along with my alarm clock.

Same. I lose around 3-5% in 7-9 hours of sleep.

The phone is too thin. Seriously. lol.
Its kinda awkward to type on, how much thinner is it than the first gen iphone? I never had that problem. Maybe I'm just not used to it.

Everytime I reach in my pocket to pull it out I'm pretty amazed at the quality of the hardware. Its an amazing amazing piece of technology.

I haven't really handled one. Is it all metal and glass like it appears to be? My 3GS looked sleek when I bought it two years ago, but it's really starting to show its plastic-ness.

Yup. All metal and glass. Though on the white model which I have the back looks a bit plasticky.

Can anyone explain to me the behavior of the notifications on the lock screen. Half the time they're the old bubble style and the other have they align themselves in a row under the clock... I haven't really been able to use it enough to figure out the patterns yet.

I always love to remember that they had to get a shit-ton of expensive-ass, high-precision, low-output specialized machines, usually reserved for prototypes, to mass produce the iPhone 4/iPhone 4S.

Apple excels at this stuff, but this one is by far their craziest design. In a good way, of course.

So how do I get Airplay to stream videos from my mac to my phone?

You can set which behavior you'd like in the notifications section. Banner mode is the new version.

This applies to the lock screen too? I have everything set to banners.. and it does the android thing I'm used to. I mean specifically when the phone is locked I've see Verbs display an IM in the bubble/alert format.. but then I've also seen it display notifications in a sorta stacked format right under the giant clock thing.

..weak I thought AirVideo was just for .mkvs and dvix files. I figured I could stream my iTunes videos without any extra apps.

There used to be this AirView app which turned your iPhone into an AirPlay receiver (not sure if the Mac supports AirPlay output though?). Anyway, it was pulled, so tough cookies.

I <3 WiFi sync. If only I could make the "sync now" button persist in the notification bar or a shortcut on the home screen. Regardless thats a killer feature.

The buttons rattle when you shake/tap it. :| LAME!

Wait, so I enable home sharing it the videos won't play on my phone. It just starts them on the computer.

Did you go into iphone settings and add your login information under home sharing then go to the videos app and select your computer as the source?

Yup! It gave me an alert bubble saying it was already added.

Im just gonna go read a guide.

Got it working!
Oh man, Cartoons look so badass. The IPS display has great colors.

I've had my 4s for a couple of weeks now, and usually it only takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge the phone, but last night, I left it plugged in overnight and it went from 23% battery to 94%. That's about 7 hours of charging. This is with pretty much all notifications/location services off. Only wifi was on. If this keeps up, will I need to exchange it? Would they let me? Could the next software update fix something like this?

I'm hoping maybe the display for the battery is wrong, and it is actually at 100%.

On the lockscreen, notifications will show up as a bubble when they first come in. The most recent notification will be a bubble the first time you see it (or when the screen happens to be active when it arrives, then goes inactive). After that the notification goes into the list underneath the clock.

I tried electric brains tip of removing the location services for auto timezone updates and my battery seemed fine again last night, so I don't know if that was just a freak discharge or what, but I guess I'll just see what happens over the next week or so. Thanks for the advice guys.

There is definitely a 2 or 3 second delay between the time the email box magically appears underneath a photo attachment and when you can enter the recipient.

weird, this happened to me last night too. i woke up after a 9 hour sleep to find my phone at 97%.

Just spent like 20 minutes fretting over my background color and why one image didn't match the one on the lock screen and then I realized the phone adds some sort of gradient layer or whatever to the one on the homescreen. :\

I ended up going with a simple white background with a big splash of colors arcing from the bottm where the slide to unlock button is up and around the clock.

Then when you unlock I mirrored the image so the arc draws up from the music icon and through the right hand corner and back out by the carrier logo so if you were to place my lock screen next to the homescreen there would be a big arc of color going from the slide to unlock button up and over and back down the music icon.

WooHoo! Here is my phone! I'm way too excited about this.

So GAF. I was just wondering, maybe you could give your opinions:

I own a Mac computer, but I'm still using a phone which is almost 2,5 years old. This is because I always renew my contract for 2 year periods. So I haven't really owned a smartphone until now. The thing is, I can renew my contract and go for an iPhone 4s, but I was wondering whether it's really worth it, because I expect the iPhone 5 to be released next summer. I'm very much in doubt, because I just need a new phone. But maybe it would be smarter to, what's called a 'Sim Only' contract here in Holland, for 1 year. What do you think GAF? Thanks!

Also, Jtwo what kind of music is that in the background of your YouTube vid? :D

Just FYI... I had pretty bad battery life and tried almost everything. The thing that made the biggest impact for me was disabling wifi syncing. If you don't know how to disable it you probably didn't ever enable it. It has to be done through iTunes . Just uncheck the box and sync. I can now get a full day with moderately heavy use. No noticeable drain in standby. Your mileage may vary.
