512MB eh? iPhone 5 to have 1GB of RAM confirmed? :P
I'm sure it will, they're stockpiling bullet points for the reveal already. :p

I wish Three would put their pre-order date up so I can stop going to their website every ten minutes. I'm guessing Friday along with Apple and everyone else?

550 bucks from the canada store. will be the same is USD, when offered. (that's only 100 less than the 4S. seems like a poor deal, imo)
Guess I'll just bite the bullet and contract up with the 4S. I think I might creep around craigslist for a 32GB 4 first though. If I can get one for $300 I'd rather go that route. I'm coming off an OG Droid so either is an upgrade. I just don't want to be butthurt if a larger screen iDevice comes out next summer.

Okay I have been trying to keep with with this is thread so maybe this was asked, but can anyone offer some advice?

So basically I want to know how I can preorder the phone, and have it in my hand on the 14th.

I dont want it mailed to me, b/c I will be out of town (leaving the 14th) and I don't want it stolen and I would LOVE to have it that 1st weekend.

I called 2 at&t stores.

The 1st said:

You can call me (she then gave me her name and told me to ask for her) on the 13th and tell me that you are coming in the 14th and I will put you on a list. I usually only get 2-3 people on the list so I don't think you will have a problem getting one. Just come in the next day and pick it up. I asked her again "If I dont preorder and just call you on the 13th, I should be able to walk in and out of your store with a phone right?" Shes said "yes you shouldn't run into a problem"

The 2nd one said:

We actually are unsure of how preorders are going to work, but when you preorder you will get it mailed to you, we don't do preorders for our actual store, and at the last iPhone launch we had a line of people and ran out of phones.

Now I live in a small town in Illinois so I don't think the demand will be TOO high. Should I still preorder anyway? How much is a preorder? Can I cancel a preorder?

Any help would be SUPER appreciated, this is my 1st smartphone and the whole thing is sorta overwhelming :/

I'm going to love Siri. Check this out

Playing devil's advocate, we were owed a 4 inch screen, a new shape, LTE 4G, Wireless Charging, NFC, Improved Display, A5 Chip, 8-12 mpx camera, 60fps 720p, 1080p, bigger battery life

we got the bolded part (3) and did not get the others (8)
You may be playing devils advocate, but we weren't owed shit.

They updated the phone to make it much better in nearly every single aspect. And people are butthurt because they didn't do enough? LTE is deployed in, what? 5 cities? Give providers the time to deploy it.

We want the best and we want it now. I admit I am victim of this impatience, but we all needed this slap in the face.

So preorders start Friday, but when will we actually get billed? Will it just appear on our monthly phone bill if we preorder through our carriers site?

I know you were under-exaggerating, but LTE is in like 150 markets in the US, most of which cover more than 1 city.

Since it's a world phone, I can get one from Sprint, and I can still get a prepaid card over seas?
Was asking this last night and no one really knows for sure.

it's obviously going to sell, apple apologists need to stop using that as an argument to justify every move they make. When the 3gs came out the smartphone market was vastly different.
at the same time you can stop pretending that the only thing the complainers wanted was a larger screen. if in fact this had been called the "iPhone 5", had all the same specs, but with a slightly larger screen, the whining would not exist. The problem isn't the internal specs, because they're fantastic and should outperform all other smartphones by a fairly wide margin.

If you need a bigger screen (and let's be honest, that's what we're talking about here) you can get a Win7Mo or Android device. Sure, those other phones are likely to perform slower, eat more battery life, and lack the same quality of apps...but hey, at least you'll have the size of screen you want. After all, that seems to be the most important factor to you..assumed of course, because if the performance and software were the most important to you, no product compares to the iPhone 4S at this point in time.

So I recommend that you take out a scale and weigh what you gain overall with an iPhone 4S vs. other phones. Go with what meets the majority of your needs. If the iPhone doesn't win that battle then your alternate options should satisfy you. Or maybe you want to wait it out until an iPhone 5 shows up...but even then there's no guarantee you'll get a bigger screen.

Yes, it's unfortunate that they didn't meet all of your wishes right when you wanted them to...but I'm sure they're doing as well as they can relative to their own standards for quality and what their suppliers have to offer at the moment. Whining about it in 2 straight days of posts is just lame, bro.

OK so I'm probably going to go with this, and it's my first smart phone purchase, and I've got questions.

1. I'll still be on my parents plan because everything is cheaper because my Dad runs all our phones through his business. Problem is I live in a different state. I don't really have access to the account. Is this a problem? How do I go about buying the phone at $199 and linking it to an account I don't have access to?

2. What does preordering do for me? I'm going to assume my first bullet point answer is my parents will have to buy the phone for me. So does a preorder from Apple.com only work at my closest Apple store or can it work at any Apple store?

3. When an iPhone 5 comes out how easily could it be for me to pawn of the 4S to my Mom, have her upgrade her account (she doesn't have a smart phone either) and I get her iPhone 5?

1. No, that won't be a problem.

2. Pre-ordering will ensure that you'll get the phone at launch. They tend to sell out quickly and supply tends to be low for the first month or so. By pre-ordering you can likely avoid lines and a long delivery date.

3. Should be pretty easy. The 4S is going to be a fantastic phone. iPhone 5, who knows what it'll do or when it will arrive.

I'm still on my parents plan. When I got the iPhone 3G three years ago, I ran into a problem because I didn't have full privileges, or whatever. Once my dad seat that up, I didn't have a problem. Currently I live in a different state, but I haven't gotten a new phone since, so I don't know for certain there will be a problem, but I suspect not.

1) If you want to be able to pre-order online, you may need the last 4 SSN of the account holder. My mom's the main holder, so I need her SSN to do any upgrades - despite having full access to the account (this is with AT&T).

2) When pre-ordering from apple.com, I believe you have the option of them shipping to you or you can pick it up at the store - but am not completely sure.

3) Pretty easy. Once your contract is up and are upgrading to the 5, you can basically have your carrier switch your mom's line over to the 4S. They may or may not need the main account holder.

So I can just walk into any Apple store, they look me up, and I bypass all lines to get it?

Oh and RIP Steve Jobs. God this sucks. :(

So is there a specific link we go to for the preorders, or will there be a link on Apples homepage when it opens up?

and, holy crap.... RIP Steve Jobs.

Any estimates on how much space 1080p video takes up?

If I dedicated 1gb of space to 1080p recording, how many minutes would I get?

The main thing that has me leaning towards upgrading is my fucking iPhone 4 constanlty losing reception and 3G data access.

Fucking hell.

Guess we now know why this wasn't iPhone 5. It's iPhone 4-Steve. :(

Cheesy, I know. But really sad news on Steve's passing, even if not unexpected.

I am quoting this in case you sober up and edit your post.

iPhone for Steve... How long will it take for me to undo this? Now I will think of this post everytime I hear the words iPhone 4S. Thanks, bro.

1080P videos are going to fill the measly 16GB fast...

Did anyone here pre-order the Verizon iPhone 4 through Verizon's site? If so, I have a question. Is the pre-order process the same as the upgrade process, the same page and everything? Or is the preorder page a totally separate page?

LOL! Hey, I said it was cheesy. Still won't edit it.

I hope Steve was able to see one last product launch yesterday.

That's what I'm afraid of.

Any chance they'll give us a 720p recording option, as well?

I'm guessing there will be a couple levels of quality but you never know. 1080p does eat up storage very quickly.

Fuck man...why.? Now everytime I even see that "S" now I'm going to feel low...very very low.

I hope this is a joke. Otherwise, grow up.

On topic: Verizon preorders open up when?

Odd that in the comparison between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 on the Apple website, most Battery Life comparisons are the similar, but when it comes to Standby time, the there's a 100 hour difference (300 to 200) in favor of the iPhone 4.

I mean, it matters little to me, as I plug my phone in every night, but I thought it was interesting, nonetheless.

Looks like I'm waiting until January. I want the 64GB but I become eligible for an upgrade early next year. Already have an iPhone 4, so there's no way I'm paying $450 over the contract price to upgrade right now. I'd love to have one, but it can wait. This is hard for me because I'm such a sucker for gadgets...but I have to show restraint here.

I'm waiting

I'm someone who was somewhat disappointed with the no show 5. I was really looking forward to the larger screen, the redesigned shell (including the slimmer size), and the new, wider, and possible touch, home button... but apart from that.. everyone and their mother expected the innards to be exactly what we got on the 4S.... so really, I agree that the complaints are getting a bit out of hand.

Question: How will pre-orders work for those who plan on switching carriers? i.e. subsidy and so forth....

My plan: ATT to Sprint

I was seriously considering an iPhone 5 if it had a screen size that I felt was adequate.

It's keeping the same screen size, so I'll be getting a Nexus Prime.

Everyone keeps assuming Siri is processor limited but what if it's a RAM limitation? It would explain the absence of Siri in the iPad 2 as well as the iPhone 4, if the iPhone 4S has the rumoured 1GB of RAM in it.

edit: Saw the bit above where it might only have 512... guess we won't know for sure until they start shipping.

Wondering the same thing, though I'm thinking of switching to Verizon.

I'm in the same place. Upgrade on in Feb 2012 otherwise they add $250 to the upgrade price. I have a 4 now, paying $450 for the 16BG model is a tough decision.

Wondering this too. I'm with AT&T and plan on switching to Verizon. I want to pre-order with Verizon even though I have no account with them. I need my AT&T number ported over as well.

Verizon will take care of it, you'll get the new iPhone 4S, then your old phone will be dead.

You then get a bill from AT&T with the ETF and your last bill.

You'll probably get like 5 minutes worth of 1080p recording.

I remember I recorded a 5-6 minute video on my 4 and it came out to about 480 MB.
