Now I will call you and ask you to give me the showtimes your next movie while you are on the phone
As ridiculous as it sounds, this precise scenario is one of the reasons we stuck with AT&T.

So, I tried to redeem my T-Mobile (DE) premier-ticket today, but the entire system crashed. I will try it again tomorrow.

So, I posted in this thread yesterday that I had dropped (and shattered) my iPhone 4. Well, went to the store yesterday and they replaced it. FOR FREE!
Awesome.
So now I can give that one to my wife and get the 64GB 4s that I ordered this morning! All is well with the cosmos.

edit: I see it's still showing "Delivers 10/14". Does this mean these things AREN'T selling like hotcakes, or does it mean they've been able build a shitton of them due to the similarity to the i4?

With people with spring and a little over a year into their contracts.

I called sprint to bitch about their change of upgrades.

They "couldn't" do shit about it. Added a new line to my plan with the Iphone subsidized and dropped mine for a ETF price of $100.

Better than paying full retail and something for people to consider.

Apple is pretty boss like that.

...although I'm curious if they are going to be much less forgiving now that AppleCare+ exists.

I DID IT! I SWITCHED! 32GB BLACK 4S ON VERIZON! NUMBER SWITCHED! BURN IN HELL AT&T!
In my experience in SF, Verizon's coverage is slightly better than AT&T, but I'm not a heavy user by any stretch of the imagination. Customer service was comparable for them. I'm sticking with AT&T due to my current plan, otherwise I'd consider switching.

How long does it take to get a confirmation email from the Apple Store? Placed an order like 30 minutes ago.
It took mine 2-3 hours this morning. I wouldn't worry about it quite yet.

After seeing those US price plans, I just can't believe how much you're getting screwed on pricing in the US.

First a few prerequisites:

Advertised pricing in the UK includes 20% VAT (i.e. sales tax) and as any applicable taxes in the US are on top of the advertised pricing I'll work out the price excluding VAT for a fair comparison but still include the price including VAT.

We don't pay to receive calls or texts here, so any minute allowance is worth double what it is in the USA.

Lets take the one plan from Three. With this you get:

5000 texts
2000 minutes
unlimited three to three calls
Truly unlimited data
Free wifi tethering.

All this for just £35 per month with a one off £99 charge for the 16GB phone.

Excluding VAT those prices are £29.17 per month and £ 82.5. In dollars that is $45.23 monthly and $128 one off.

For a similar plan in the US we'll take Sprints unlimited talk text and data plan with personal hotspot. Sure, that three plan doesn't technically have unlimited calls but with unlimited calls within the network and the ability to receive an unlimited calls, it basically is, I guess it's possible to make 33 hours worth of outgoing calls outside the network though.

That plan costs $140!! Even the phone itself is more expensive at $199.

So over the 2 year contract you pay $1,168.02 in the UK and $3,559 in the USA. In the USA heavy data users are overpaying by $ 2,391!!!!

Even if we use UK prices after VAT that still comes to $1,454, which is still much less than half the US pricing.

I appreciate the networks have to cover a much larger area in the US but then you can hardly boast ~98% coverage for 3G services either.

G'DAMN! You'll have to let us know how your conversion works out. Whenever LTE comes into the equation for the iPhone I'll have a much more compelling reason to get away from AT&T...and last night was another good reminder on why they BLOW.
I shouldn't need to have a conversation, should I? Doesn't my AT&T account close out automatically as part of porting the number over on activation of the new phone?

Hmm... Is it possible to put a call on hold and query Siri?
Siri requires an internet connection to do that, so even if you could, you wouldn't be able to on Sprint/Verizon.

Wonder if on AT&T you can start using Siri while on a call, though. Can you use the voice recorder while on a call? If so, I'd think you could.

Is this a question for me?

Aww, I ordered it from AT&T earlier this morning. It originally said it would be ready for Oct 14th, but it's now on back order. :\

That's how it worked when I switched from Sprint to AT&T. It was all automatic. I got one last bill from Sprint, and that was it.

if i buy my iphone from a carrier store, can i go to the apple store later that week and buy applecare individually?

Not AppleCare+, no. Not sure about regular AppleCare.

http://www.apple.com/support/products/iphone.html

Under "Important Notes": AppleCare+ must be purchased together with new covered equipment. See AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions for complete product details.

The regular $69 AppleCare does not appear (at the moment) to include the iPhone 4S.

i won't dismiss that north americans get totally screwed over, but i guess one must also take into account how much more massive the required network infrastructure and maintenance is in canada and the united states. i'm not excusing the level of absurdity of the rates though.

seriously? so will carrier stores be selling applecare+ or am i fucked?

EDIT: i looked at the canadian site and when you go to preorder the iphone 4s, it only shows regular applecare so i guess canadians don't get applecare+. oh well, at least i can go buy it from the store.

Fuuuuuck.. I forgot to pay for it, and now I don't see a way to add it to the cart.

:(

Wait, so if you buy the iPhone 4S on AT&T they literally will take away your unlimited data? If that's the case Sprint has a new customer

Nope. The thing on the website that says that is a bit misworded. The next screen has you, by default, selected for "iPhone 4S Unlimited Data - $30/month", if your current plan is the grandfathered Unlimited Plan. They are just calling it "iPhone 4S Unlimited Data". I kept mine.

what is this about applecare+???

crap. so are there arent any other options for extended insurance for those of us who bought throughb our carrier (in my case, at&t)? not cool.

GLaDOS siri makes me want to abandon my android phone for an iPhone... ack.

Here's to hoping someone makes this for android!

You don't want carrier insurance. Applecare is cheaper AND better.

My UK order is still saying 14th Oct delivery. Maybe I was early enough to avoid slippage?

Also went white this time, so it'll be something different to look at than the 4.

You might be able to call Apple and add it to the order, but it has to be ordered with the phone. You can't buy it after. One of the order review screens before checkout had it. They really should warn you that after you order you won't be able to add it. Sneaky.

understood. i think i misspoke...what i meant to ask is if i can stil purchase applecare for the iphone 4s (does it really have to be applecare+) separately

"AT&T may be trying to trick iPhone 4S upgraders out of their unlimited data plans. Here's how to keep yours."

While we had no problem getting an iPhone 4S while keeping our grandfathered data plan, that’s because we ordered direct from Apple. On the other hand, we’ve received at least two reports of readers who are being told by AT&T that they have to give up their unlimited data if they want an iPhone 4S. Uh oh. Luckily, there’s a way to make sure you keep your unlimited plan: don’t give att.com the time of day.

It’s a really shady move on the part of AT&T, who has been boning things up all morning. Here’s the deal.

If you go to Apple.com’s iPhone 4S pre-order page and sign up for a new handset through AT&T, Apple’s site will register that you have an unlimited data plan and everything’s hunky dory.

Whatever you do, though, don’t order an iPhone 4S directly from AT&T. When you try to order one, the AT&T website will tell you:

Your new device requires a different Data Add-on Plan than you currently have. We selected a compatible Data Add-on Plan for you. If you want a different plan, you can change the Data Add-on Plan by selecting Change here or from within myAT&T after you receive and activate your new device.

If you notice and try to change the data plan manually, AT&T won’t give you the unlimited data plan option (unlike if you do it on the Apple website.)

So basically, here’s what it boils down to, at least as far as we can tell. If you order an iPhone 4S from AT&T, they will force you to give up your unlimited data plan. So don’t even bother with att.com. Just head on over to Apple.

Yeah, you can add it within 30 days of purchase.

So... is the 4s more like the GSM 4 or CDMA 4 with the volume and vibrate switch locations?
It is exactly like the CDMA 4 if you're getting at cases that would fit.

yea i kinda freaked when i saw that i had the other "options" as far as data were concerned. then i glanced over and saw the "unlimited" checkbox (on apple's site). WHEW. fuck at&t, seriously... shady fucks.

That does not appear to be the case this time around. The listing for iPhone AppleCare does not currently list the iPhone 4S as a covered device — just devices prior to it. But, you might want to call Apple. If you ordered through Apple.com you might be able to add it to the existing order. Not sure about how it works if you order through a carrier.

Where did you read that? It specifically says on apple's site you must purchase it at the same time as the covered device.

Wow, my co-worker was just telling me he'd experienced this maybe ten minutes ago.

With a screen protector and a decent case, I think I will take the risk and not get applecare. I haven't had any cell phones break in my life so I take pretty good care of them.

Good luck! Just avoid water damage and you should be ok.

I just pre-ordered from Sprint. They charged me the taxes from the un-subsidized price, so an extra $71! Is this normal?

Also, can anyone recommend a cheap ($10 or less) case/bumper/protector from Amazon?

AT&T trying to scam people out of their unlimited data plans is just one more reason I'm glad to see the back of them.

I'm excited but anxious about switching to Verizon. On the one hand I'm excited about the more robust network, fewer dropped calls etc. On the other hand I'm worried that the data speeds will be noticeably slower, since overall I probably use my iPhone more for data and for calls. But at the end of the day I think I had to switch, I felt so pathetic even considering staying with AT&T after all the complaining I've done about their shitty network.

Just pre-ordered!

From AT&T.. they gave me the option to keep my unlimited data plan.. it just switched from "Unlimited iPhone Data" to "Unlimited iPhone 4s Data."

Sooo.. not sure what some are talking about.

I got to keep my unlimited plan from AT&T by just ordering from Apple.com, never even considered getting it from AT&T, since when I went for my 3GS, they forced me to go to the apple store instead of theirs.
