Just pre-ordered!

From AT&T.. they gave me the option to keep my unlimited data plan.. it just switched from "Unlimited iPhone Data" to "Unlimited iPhone 4s Data."

Sooo.. not sure what some are talking about.
Ya that's how it was for me. I really looked over that screen multiple times tho. I was afraid they were trying to trick me. Of course I want to keep my unlimited data.

re: getting scammed

if you don't do anything on that page, it defaults to your grandfathered data plan. it is only if you pick a different plan does it take you off the unlimited data plan.

i juggled this for like 45 minutes this morning. just don't select a new plan.

EDIT: the article has been updated to basically say what i said
Update: Reader Michael explains that what is going on isn’t nearly as devious as it appears, just confusing.

I believe this may be a misunderstanding. I have the grandfathered $30 unlimited iPhone data plan on my current 3GS, and my purchase on the AT&T site looked just like the example here. It preselected the $30 plan for my new 4S and despite the same ominous message, I checked out with the $30 “iPhone data plan”.

I also ordered a new 4S for someone else right afterward. That order required me to pick from one of the new data plans ($25 or $45) with radio buttons before I could proceed. That order summary showed a new ongoing monthly $25 fee for the DataPro 2GB plan. It did not offer anything called a “$30 data plan for iPhone.”

Thus I believe that my order and yours are in fact grandfathering the old, unlimited, $30 plan, and the message is just misleading.

In other words, if you ignore this message, you still get your unlimited data plan. Whew. Here’s the question, though: is AT&T trying to trick people out of their unlimited data plans? Sure seems like it.

still shady though

So everything went through last night when I pre ordered it through verizon but it has me a little scared cuz I used my moms upgrade on her account and when it asked for payment the damn thing wouldnt let me change my name...does anyone know if that will be a problem?

Talked with mom, she's taking my 3GS so I'll be showing her how to use it over this weekend in preparation for next weekend.

As for taking on another data plan - I'm the one that pays the bills anyway so it shouldn't be terribly different from what I pay now.

AT&T trying to scam people out of their unlimited data plans is just one more reason I'm glad to see the back of them.

I'm excited but anxious about switching to Verizon. On the one hand I'm excited about the more robust network, fewer dropped calls etc. On the other hand I'm worried that the data speeds will be noticeably slower, since overall I probably use my iPhone more for data and for calls. But at the end of the day I think I had to switch, I felt so pathetic even considering staying with AT&T after all the complaining I've done about their shitty network.

Did you have an early termination fee?

Yeah, but they can brick the damned thing and track it, so there's a possibility of recovery.
So you should cough up $100 for "the possibility of recovery" with AppleCare? You're going to sit around phoneless while the police go track down your phone? Assuming it hasn't been powered off.....

It seems smarter to just get the carrier's insurance or a 3rd party insurance. If the phone gets stolen or left on an airplane or whatever you just get another one, rather than sitting around and praying that it comes back to you.

Verizon isn't perfect, but I've never had an issue that wasn't easily resolved, and I've never had anything cause me the level of outrage AT&T consistently inspired. Maybe they've improved in the last two years since I switched, but the service was the absolute worst and I've been on T-Mo, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.

Do you have to get a reservation number through apple.com to guarantee your delivery? I ordered my phone at 6AM CST this morning and so far have only received an order acknowledgement.

Is that good enough?

You're good. Reservations were for those that got halfway through the order process and couldn't continue.

I thought it was extremely obvious, and not shady whatsoever.

Feel like people are just looking for a conspiracy. I saw the messages.. was obvious I was keeping my unlimited plan with a name-change to reflect the 4S... said "Add to cart".. done... then came here and saw the fuss and was like WTF?

Good deal, thanks!

I will mention this though, after ordering my device through apple.com, I had to call AT&T customer service and make sure they transferred my current data plan over when the 4S is activated. I have a company phone and therefore need the enterprise data plan in order for my business email to work, and that was not one of the listed data plan options through apple.

I did not see an option to add Applecare+ when I ordered my iPhone through Apple's website. For that reason I still believe what an earlier poster said about still being able to purchase it from an Apple store after ordering the phone, despite what some are saying.

edit:

Looks like it's true that you can just buy the insurance through an Apple store.

Have to wait until Jan 17 to be eligible to upgrade. I love how easy it is to sell iPhones. Guilt free upgrading made easy.

I just reserved a 32 GB iPhone 4S from fido's lovely (new?) online reservation system. i'm number 1520 in line (I assume that's for fido in montreal and not all of canada...). I guess I should get it late october. they'll ship it to a fido store close to my place.

that was incredibly painless. what a great system. so much better than having to wait in line early in the morning or call up a sales rep every couple days to check stock.

Short question: Did Apple announce anything on RAM on the iPhone 4S? Ho wmuch RAM does the 4 have?
We don't know, but the main main behind Infinity Blade 2 (which was demo'd in the reveal) suggested that it still has 512MB.

Got an email from AT&T, after pre-ordering in the store today, that confirmed the order and said "Your iPhone will ship in approximately 14 to 21 days".
Er? I would have bought upon release if that were the case, as it would be quicker. Is this likely, or are they just hedging bets? The guy I talked to in the store said that they could literally ship any time, any day now, even before the 14th.

There are conflicting things being said in that thread. :) Previously, with AppleCare, yes - you could purchase it any time up to 1 year from the purchase of an iPhone. That's how it has been with iPhones and other Mac hardware for years. However, AppleCare+ is new, has new rules, and only covers current iPhone models (3GS, 4 and 4S). Apple Store employees or customer service folk may not be completely familiar with that yet because it's different than what was previously offered.

That said, I'm surprised it can't be added to an order that was placed but hasn't shipped yet. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple reverses course if enough people request to add it tho'. If your order hasn't shipped yet there's no reason not to let you give them another $100.

AT&T screwed me with the Visa processing issue. No emails or anything after my 5 AM order. Spent 30+ minutes on their phone support and econmerce support then it hung up on me.. Their departments have no communication between them. Pretty annoying.

Ordered again through apple w/ applecare+ and it looks like they are still offering the 14th.

I know the Sprint rep told me give it 2 days or the day the phones arrive to set it all up but I got an email welcoming me to Sprint's bill email delivery system! WTF? How about my order/account confirmation??

Edit: I was told that everything went through fine, but I'd still like to see my info. I don't like feeling blind.

I ordered through the AT&T Website and it didn't give me an option for AppleCare+ :/

What's this about it being $99? I thought it was only $55 now?
AppleCare+ is $99.

WTF, why is the unlocked phone only available on GSM?? The Iphone 4 comes with cdma/gsm chip, I wanted it unlocked for ATT, and then be able to switch to Sprint/Verizon if I wanted to later...

WTF.

Still don't have my order confirmation email and the Apple store is down. I have an order number though.

I'm the same with Sprint. I checked their "My Order" stuff and it was in there. Could be doing batch jobs sending out a ton of e-mails at a time. I wouldn't fret too much.

AT&T's superior network had no problem sending me a confirmation e-mail.

What did they say about your shipping in it? Again, mine said 14 - 21 days, which is fucking absurd, and I hope they are hedging bets.

So quick question before I confirm my order. My sister's line on my family plan is eligible for upgrade but is on a dumbphone, so I'll have to add a data plan. Can I just not activate the iPhone when it comes in, put my sim in the phone and cancel the data plan for her line?

My order acknowledgement email lagged by about 90 minutes from when I ordered (maybe it was a full 2 hours). So you should get that soon I'd think.

The order tracking area of store.apple.com is down, although I was able to track my order via the OSX Delivery Status widget with the order number from my Acknowledgement email. Says 7 days and that it's "processing items" but that's it. Not exciting yet. :)

I got screwed. Went through all the hoops last night. Set the alarm. Waited for an hour while Apple.com constantly crashed/didn't update. Finally got through to the preorder screen, put in all my information.

"Sorry, you are on a business account, please contact your nearest AT&T store for further details."

Called them this morning explaining the situation and already the wait for me to get one is going to be over a month. Fucking bullshit.

You might be able to call Apple and add it to the order, but it has to be ordered with the phone. You can't buy it after. One of the order review screens before checkout had it. They really should warn you that after you order you won't be able to add it. Sneaky.

I've been trying to call apple, but there is a message playing saying that they are overloaded.

I didn't even notice the damn thing. :(

I am having the same issue and i was first at my store this morning. I asked the salesman what was up and he said thats was standard for all reserves.

.....I think he is clueless though. AT&T is f'n up

Here's my e-mail.

The time is PST.. and it says to expect on the 14th.

If you ordered before 10AM West Coast time, and got a different message?

It's likely that they just had the wrong message in their template, and corrected it.

If you ordered after 10AM PST? You likely ordered past some threshold of theirs.

(of course mine isn't guaranteed either)

Finally got through to Apple.. and they added applecare+ to my order and will be e-mailing me when it is processed (might be a while because the store is bogged down apparently).

:)

Erm...just watched the Siri demo vid. Is that for real? It honestly types out messages for you and so forth? :s
It's actually a lie and Apple's banking on no one calling them on it!

Just confirmed with my local Apple Store that if you order from Verizon and want to get Applecare+ you can just come into the apple store and get it after you get your device. They said that you could do it within the year of buying it. It is $99.

Looks like I might just leave my phone naked.

yup! there's actually been apps like that for blackberry/android for a while (maybe ios too but i wouldn't know). siri seems to be extremely intelligent though.

edit: and by "like that", i mean by writing text from your speech. i have a blackberry and don't know of any apps that do much more than that.
