I kinda doubt their claim that it needs the extra power is the only reason. If so, why not include it in the iPad 2 after the iOS5 update? That has an A5 too.
could be a memory issue as well. 512MB of RAM may not cut it.

Holy carp. I don't see how anyone could be underwhelmed after seeing iCloud, the new camera and Siri in action. I've been using iOS 5 beta since June (well at least until I sold my iPhone 4) and I was still impressed.

On a side note, my boss (who owns a SGSII) saw me watching the Siri portion of the keynote and tried to show off Android's speech to text. I'm sure Siri won't be perfect but his "demonstration" was laughably bad :P

the jailbreak community brought multitasking to the 3g, and I hope they do the same with siri. Who knows though maybe it is tied to the processor and it's impossible. The design of the dragon GO app is horrendous...

Could be, but is it even confirmed whether or not the 4S has a gig of RAM?
it wasn't confirmed that the iphone 4 or ipad 2 had double the RAM of their predecessors till well after the conference, so i doubt it.

I always wondered why Apple doesn't hype up RAM upgrades when announcing new iPhones.

Well if AT&T lets me upgrade a little early then I guess I'll get one. I'm eligible in January so you'd think they would be ok with it. Siri looks really cool.

was a big 'wait for the iphone 5' announcement for me.

that's OK though if the rumoured blackberry apps start making their way to IOS... I need my enterprise mail on one of these in the secure 'activate your blackberry' method of delivery, if that ever happens I'll spring for the cost of my own hardware.

Early upgrades are 400 dollars right? Not really worth it unless I can get that much for my 4. Every offer I have gotten today or yesterday has been 250 or under.

naah, no way, you like apple stuff? crazy talk

After looking at Apple's video of it on the Apple channel on Youtube, I want this shit soooo bad now. Poor Droid X2. I already don't want you anymore. :P

I'm still on a 16GB iPhone 3G here! ;_;

I was planning to get a white iPhone 4, but it was delayed so long that I decided to 'wait a few months' to get the next. As it turned out, that was more than a few months, but I'm still happy to get a better phone

I'my torn on what capacity of 4GS to get. Probably 32GB. I'm astonished that storage capacity is still a premium several years later. 16GB should be minimum by now, surely.

I'm dreading the UK pricing for these phones. I'll also probably be one of the sad-nerds queueing to get one at 8AM next Friday, mostly because it's more convenient to get my contract transfer done in store.

Well, call me twisted, but come on..

Does the new antenna improve data speeds on all 3 carriers or just AT&T?

I currently have AT&T, but I'm considering switching to Sprint if the monthly plan is cheaper. However if data speeds will be significantly better on AT&T then I will just stay with them.

Also am I correct in saying the new antenna does not take advantage of HSPA+ , just uses some trickery to make current HSPA faster?

I have 3G and at this point upgrading is a no brainer. Aside from the fact that its a mega leap forward in all technical aspects.. The 3G is actually worse than in was in 2008... The new firmwares ruin performance, and tons of apps don't work if you didn't update, and many don't work even if you do.

Holy shit. How? The 3G seems so dated now. You need to upgrade stat!

Yea I noticed as soon as I tried playing the newer games like Final Fantasy Tactics and SSF4 Volt. Those games run like a slideshow =(

I'm thinking they are using the iPhone 4S as a transition to increasing the minimum storage, I predict the next iPhone which will most likely be a re-designed one will have a $200 32GB model and a $300 64GB model. At least that's what I hope :-p

Anyone know why this guy took such an epic shit on the iPhone4s?

That was just brutal.

?
I tweeted him and he said he wasn't being serious

It was too early in the morn but I think I gotta call him out on that shit

If Siri is tied to the processor, ram and what not.

Why not for iPad 2?

I dunno why people seem so disappointed that it wasn't a complete redesign. I would like a bigger screen, but I don't expect them to completely re-design the phone with each new model, I'm fine waiting for every other iPhone for a re-design if one is needed.

Going from the 4 to the 4S is just as big of a leap if not bigger than 3G to 3GS, but I don't remember anyone throwing a fit about not having a complete re-design back then.

I have the iPhone 4 and to me its worth updating for the 3 main new upgrades, faster processor, upgraded camera and integrated siri voice assistance. The updated antenna is just a bonus, but I'm a little skeptical if I will actually see faster download speeds or better reception with it.

Still lacking turn by turn directions via GPS. Where is my new MAPS application, it can't be harder to code than Siri.

Also, no Rev. B for CDMA?

and where is the 21mps 3G for GSM?

sigh....I'm on a 1st gen iPhone so I'll be upgrading with Sprint, but no turn by turn its just sad...

I'm probably gonna get it, I don't know if I should jump from ATT to sprint though. Upgrading early and etf plus the cost of the phone is the same.

... Really? What's wrong with you? :/

BTW, I will be getting the iPhone 4S. It will also be my first iPhone! (though I already have an iPad, iPod Touch 3rd gen and used to have the 1st gen one too so I'm not now to iOS)

By the way, can we confirm at this point that it is literally the exact same form factor as the 4? No switch or button out of place?

Is it safe to buy any old iPhone 4 case, in other words?

I'm broke and my 3G is broke.

I might take a new 3gs for free with another 2 years.

I don't want to cancel my line because I still have the unlimited plan. :|

You can probably re-up your contract with the old plan grandfathered in? At least my carrier in Canada implied to me that I could.

You mean if after I upgrade or cancel for a while?

Afaik I can either go another month or two without a phone, upgrade to the 3gs for free and get an iPhone 6 next year (because they usually cut your upgrade limit in half when a new one releases?), or cancel my line for a few months and lose unlimited data for-ev-ver.

I'm still rocking the 3GS and have been thinking about upgrading, but I dunno if I should just go for the 4S or get some sort of Android based affair. Not really been keeping up to date on the phone front so I don't even know what's good at the mo.

I mean while you are on your current phone plan, with your nice unlimited data plan, you may be able to tack on an additional 2 yr contract to the end and get the subsidized iPhone, while keeping the same data plan. Just call and ask if it's possible, I suppose.

I thought grandfathering the old unlimited plan still worked and the only problem was the throttling they were going to do soon?

What data plan do you guys have? 2gb for 25$ and 10$ for every GB over is absurd. Wtf is this.

So, serious question here: What has Jonathan Ive and his team been doing for the past year? Ok, so there was the iPad 2, but I'm sure that design was finalized in January at the latest. There's been absolutely no new form factors after that for any Apple product, whether it be Macs, iOS devices, or even accessories. Absolutely NOTHING has been touched in terms of external design.

I'm honestly curious how Apple's design team have been spending their time, day in and day out. Do they just come out with a boatload of concepts for fun and end up scrapping 100% of them? Have they been sitting on a beach? It's not like Apple has a massive product line, and the iPhone is their most important product. Seeing as how Apple is the richest company on the planet, R&D money wasn't the issue, and neither was time (16months+), nor capability. So, what, then?

Jobs often said that the most important thing he could do was say no. Good R&D is about making a bunch of things, scrapping them and going back to the drawing board again and again until you find the one that is really great.

iPad 3 is coming and people will need a reason to buy it outside of enhanced specs?

Not sure about that... Call your carrier tomorrow... they've surely been trained on how to respond to 4S questions.

No idea actually... I bet it's worse than you guys. I was just googling around.. couldn't get a straight answer. It looked grim. I have a grandfathered 6gb per month plan for $30. Canada never had unlimited plans so that's the closest thing to unlimited we've ever had (and I've never once gotten close to 6gb per month). And now you can't get it. That's a lot to pay really.. but I maintain it for peace of mind... :P

I think I am finally done with AT&T.

I don't really see the need to upgrade from the 4 solely based on the base features of the 4S, but combined with me wanting a white one plus moving from No Service: The Company, it feels like the right thing to do. Now I just need to sell my mint condition iPhone 4 for at least $250....

Yep, same here. Contract expired in August, and I've been waiting for this day for a loooong time. Coverage where I live is atrocious, dropped calls and texts galore. My mom has Verizon and loves it, plus I'd get a 20% discount through my job, so it's a rather easy decision for me.

Disappointed by new iPhone? You're nuts.

I missed the $99 iPhone 4 and free (on contract) iPhone 3G news yesterday. It's big.

It's pretty easy to understand why Apple called its new iPhone a 4S instead of 5:
1. it makes the juggernaute iPhone 4 still relevant (less has been/not a generation behind), in the entry level/biggest growing market
2. for millions of new iPhone 4 adopters, it makes the upgrade easier to accept.
3. it keeps hype intact for iPhone 5 with people still in contract

Win.
