Waste of money, just wipe it on your shirt.

Not to add to however obsessive this discussion may be...but to preserve the phone best this is not a good idea, unless you are wiping dirt from a clear case.

An employee at Ray Ban informed me that high quality lens and screens such as the retina display can be damaged by anything that has gone through the wash. The validity of that is questionable... but hey

Interesting. You are just talking about the Apple.com store, right? Do you think that applies to people who ordered through the carriers?
Yeah, those who ordered through the carriers might be in trouble if they want AppleCare+. They had tech support taking overflow from sales today and there were several people purchasing directly from us for exactly that reason. Not sure how the previous poster managed to get the plan applied retroactively....

Just in case my post gets lost in the end of the last page.

Why bother? I've been doing it with all my iPhones since the original and none of them ever had even the slightest of scratches on the screen.

Sprint just sold out of the 16GB 4S online. Perhaps they can start making some profit to make up that debt now.

Sprint, for its part, said it was very pleased with its first-day sales as well, though it did not give numbers.

“We are very, very pleased with the initial first day of iPhone 4S pre-orders,” Sprint Vice President of Product Development Fared Adib said in a statement. “Today’s sales and the overall customer experience greatly exceeded our expectations.”

Do not do this.

Just get some cheap microfiber cloths that are used for cleaning lenses on glasses. I'm pretty sure the iPhone also comes with a good one.
microfiber cloths are totally unnecessary dude.

I've had 4 iPhones going back to 2007. always kept in the pocket with cards, keys whatever. always wiped with paper towels, shorts, towels, whatever the fuck is available.

never a scratch on the glass. Not ONE.

microfiber is overkill.

I am just stating what I have been told by more than one lens/screen specialist. He is not losing that much money anyway so why not?

This is getting really stupid... but I am glad nothing ever happened to yours. Mine however, had a big scratch on the screen the first day I bought it, after putting it in my pocket for less than an hour.

Maybe yours was built with higher quality than mine? ;)

Yeah, I guess if you want the peace of mind go for it. But are you really going to bother bringing a microfiber cloth with you whenever you go out? Like Dreams-Visions my phones have taken a beating in my pockets, and yet they all look brand new, so it just seems strange to get a cloth just to wipe off the screen.

I have a feeling the sales numbers on release are going to be pretty crazy.

False. Unlike the standard AppleCare (which you can still buy), AppleCare+ has to be applied at the time of purchase. The difference between the two is that with + you get two OOW accidental damage replacements for $49 instead of $199.

I'm currently working Apple tech support while in between jobs....

And for those of you who think you're getting an iPhone 4S on Day 1: as of 8am PST those shipping out the 14th were already sold out. Your best bet is a retail store where it's first come, first serve.

So.. as long as we had it reserved before that time, we get it? Cause I had it reserved, but ended up paying for it later since the apple store was almost impossible to get too.

I called Apple, talked to the sales department, explained to them what happened.. they added it to my order and sent me confirmation emails. When I log in to check my status on the website, it shows up as well.

Uhhh, yeah I've been wiping my phone on my shirt since the 3G and my screens have never had a scratch. Just make sure you're not being stupid and wiping it with a button or with a shirt recently dunked in sand or anything else that could obviously scratch it.

edit: I mean, on the list of things to worry about hat will fuck up your screen, I think wiping your phone with your shirt is near the bottom.

I always have a small microfiber cloth in my wallet I use for glasses/phones/anything with a screen.

Its surprisingly light :)

*edit*

actually, come to think of it, I don't know if any of you buy stuff from sunglasshut ever, but they give these away free with purchase:

Just keep one in the car for anything that needs to be cleaned

That's good to know, I'm thinking of switching from Tesco Mobile. Was going to go with 3, but not now. Were they bad everywhere?

Can only speak for London but yeah 3 was bad. The kicker was my sister sending me a text while I was in uni and me receiving it something silly like 6 hours. Thankfully it was not in that occasion but if something important happened I'd be fucked. So yeah don't bother with them, just on a personal note my sister is on O2 and her phone signal is great which is why I'm going with them.

As long as you had a reservation number, you should be good. Assuming you paid before the deadline. Do keep in mind that a reservation number does not necessarily mean a reserved phone on Day 1, though.

Another thing that one customer told me: with the iPhone 4, he waited outside his local retail store while also holding an online reservation. The store bumped those with reservations up to the front of the line.

Ok, sweet. Good to know in case I get any callers tomorrow. Frankly, though, there wasn't much interest in it. $99 is a hard sell. I wouldn't get it.

Yeah, I had a reservation number, the email said I had until the 8th to pay, but I just did it when I woke up.

... wait... I paid for it around 9:30-10 central time... so that should be okay anyway. yay! :)

wow. stop lacing your pockets with sandpaper!

but seriously...always in my pocket, never any screen protection and no anal-retentive care products.

idk.

Will the white iphone 4s's look like the iphone 4 or is the color of the white slightly different or something because the white iphone 4 looks cheap to me in person but the iphone 4s looks better on the website.

I placed my pre-order with sprint this morning around 8am CST. They already charged my card but when i track my order it's still stuck on...

"Status: The order has been submitted and requires manual processing. If there is an issue processing the order we will contact you."

I'm prolly being overly cautious but i wish they would let me know for certain if i will get the phone on the 14th or not.

Also effed up and didnt add Applecare+ :(

...cheap? In comparison to what? lol

Either way, you are going to be disappointed to hear they did not change the physical appearance.

I actually only used microfiber stuff when I had nothing covering my phone what so ever. I had a zagg screen protector installed, and I wipe it off with anything available now.

The recommendation I made was for anyone not planning to use a case, thats all...

The whites def don't look as nice as the blacks in person. I think that is what he was trying to say.

thats racist

Pretty much the same here, though I've only had one iPhone, my 3GS that I've had for two years now.

I carry it with me everywhere at all times in my pocket, unprotected. No case, no screen protector, no cleaning cloth. The glass is still immaculate, literally exactly like the day it was new. The back has only minor scuff marks that aren't even really visible except for certain lighting conditions (basically it just looks like it's been used before).

That said, I don't normally carry it with my keys. One pocket for iPhone, cash, Metrocard. Other pocket for keys, writing implements, change if it's more than one or two coins, etc.

Just a little common sense keeps it in pretty great shape.

I ordered from the apple store app directly on my iPhone this morning about 7am.

I heard about the AppleCare+ on here and called Apple about it. It apple rep was cool and just added it to my order. Maybe now I won't use a bumper since it'll be only $49 if the screen breaks.

Heh, I ordered mine at like 2:30am PST (5:30am EST actually), so I figure I'll be good.

Do you know if they're shipping out ON the 14th or before? Damn stupid UPS or whatever they're using to ship to us in Canada is horrible and going to the depot to grab it takes me 2 hours. Heh. I'll prolly stay home that day :)

I called Sprint and they told me I could still get Applecare+ as long as I buy it before activating the phone.

I heard some buttons on the iPhone 4S are in a little bit different position than on the iPhone4. So I guess getting an iPhone 4 case for an iPhone 4S is a bad idea?

The volume buttons are slightly raised I think on the new antenna design that was used of the Verizion iPhone 4.

I was told earlier in the thread that the revision actually happened on the second version of the iPhone 4 for Verizon's CDMA network. So if you can confirm with the seller that the case fits that version of iPhone 4, it will fit the 4s.

It's only the mute switch that has moved a tiny bit.

Sweet! I will try that tomorrow as well. I tried talking to some girl using the "online chat" and she was less than helpful. Pretty much told me to call and cancel my pre-order then re-order it again. :/

Thanks for the heads up

You get any update on the status of your order yet?

Hm, this is odd. So when I started the preorder process on the Verizon site this morning, I used the upgrade available on my brother's line (EnV3) to preorder the iPhone 4S for my line (Droid X). All the preorder pages listed my number as the one preordering, and when I got the confirmation email, under "plan features", Unlimited Data was listed, which only I have. All these things point to the upgrade successfully transferring and the phone coming to me.

But, whenever I go to view the phones on our Family Plan, this pops up over his phone:

chrome-extension---kgphklnbopgbelmcambccnaecijlnhno-edit_imagehtml-titleUpgradeYourDevice-3.png

Should I be worried, or do you think it's just a glitch since the preorder process was not the same as the normal upgrade process?

Just ordered a 32GB White iPhone4S from Verizon. Super excited as this will be my first smartphone. Can't wait till next week when I can finally ditch this 2008 technology I call a phone.

Was anyone on AT&T able to keep the $5 plan for 200 texts with their order. I am going to get them to add it back after I get the new phone.
No, and them trying to gouge me on unlimited texts I don't need is one of the reasons I finally decided I'd had enough and switched carriers.

May be tough to get them to add it back. They are really trying to get everyone to pay them for their unlimited text crap. Hope it works out for you!

Yeah I wonder if they're trying to make up for the fact that they know iMessage is going to seriously eat into their text profits.

Look at your iPhone screen in a very light area and from a side angle- I'm willing to bet there are at least some hairline scratches on there.

I'd argue that f you have to subject your phone to very specific angles and lighting conditions to see the scratches, they're not worth worrying about.

They better give it back! I will let you guys know. For now I went with no plan.

I just did it with mine and I can't find any scratches. I think you guys are being over protective of your phones.

Ya I think this is it. Make it so its all or nothing and either you pay them 20 cents a message or $20 a month. It sucks. :(

Put the order through and you can go back and edit the shipping info later. That's what I did.
