Standard warranties are worthless for phones because they don't cover accidental damage.
Don't know about other countries, but in the UK for the first year the Genius Bar are pretty cool when it comes to replacing accidentally damaged phones. Particularly smashed screens/backs.

yeah a friend went in after smashing his iphone 4 after about 7 months and they fixed it for him first time, he didnt have applecare or anything.

i guess thats just the standard 1yr warranty rule though

Apple does cover accidents if you purchase AppleCare+. It's not the normal AppleCare which just extends your manufactures warranty for another year and does not cover accidents. AppleCare+ I believe has to be purchased at the same time you buy your phone and replaces your 1 year warranty. Covers two accidents for the year and it's $99.

I'm pretty sure Applecare+ extends the 1 year warranty to 2 years.

I preordered my iphone but didn't get the Apple Care+. Is it too late to get it? And does it cover theft?

I guess I can take the insurance off my Sprint bill.

I wish I could be grandfathered into AT&T's data plan due to being with them for way over a decade, but I've never used a smartphone with them. I guess it's almost time to switch over to sprint so I can finally get an Iphone.

So for everyone who pre ordered the phone online, are those phones all shipped to your house? so if you actually went to a Verizon store next week there would be 0% chance of them having a phone?

What the heck is a bumber and how does it scratch your iphones? Isn't it rubber or something?
Well if my ipod is any indication, it's not actually the bumper/case that causes damage but tiny particles that get caught between the two rubbing back and forth.

I seriously believe the iPhone bumper fucked with my sleep/wake button.

Still wavering, if waiting for the unlocked Iphone 4s is worth it, or just buy the 2yr upgrade for $200 less. Would have to wait at least a month, and don't think I'm switching from ATT. Could possibly also unlock via software again.

I used to work for at&t and we would see at least 35 people a day who shattered their iPhones. At that point, you can't really do shit but pay 200 to apple to fix it or find somebody on the street who will probably fuck your phone up.

Bottom line, if you've ever dropped any phone you've ever owned, and you get an iPhone, a case is neccesary. Most of you may not ever drop your phone, but the average person does, and a case is the only protection you have from fucking your phone up. You guys are acting like the phone is made of adamantium or something, and it's not.

Any word on RAM and true tabbed browsing for iPhone Safari in iOS5?

Alternatives:

I kind of like Dolphin Browser [Link] - Free

iCab's not bad, either, but I've only used it on iPad 2. [Link] - $1.99

I've seen Atomic's name come up in the iPhone 4 OT but have no experience with it.

$0.99 - [Link]
Free Lite version - [Link]

I wish AT&T would just cut off my cell data rather than charging me an extra $15 once I hit 200MB. Their data usage meter doesn't update fast enough and as such I typically wake up a text message saying that I've hit 100%

Will have to try out Doplhin for sure. Using Opera Mini right now but it tends to freeze randomly when closing tabs.

Also: Will we get landscape-compatibility for all apps in iOS5 (like the App Store)?

If you upgrade to the 2gb plan within your bill cycle you wont get charged the overage.

I'd also like to know this before spending the ridiculous $30.00 that they cost.
I don't think it's worth it. My wife has one and it seems to be degrading over time. Doesn't seem to fit well with older cables either. I recommend the Incase Snap.

Invade snap is cool, but doesn't protect the screen. I like to put the phone screen side down and the incase doesn't have a lay-table design.

I think I'm just going to get AppleCare+ and carry it around naked. The two replacements over two years should be enough. If not, and I end up shattering the glass on the back of the phone, I'll order one of these:

in my experience they suck. Both me and my brother had the same issue, the plastic frame of the bumper snapped and the rubber started to stretch.

I just get a pull out case for the likes of my iPhone and iPad, hate putting shit that stays permanently on the thing. Also quite obviously a pull out case covers what matters the most which is the screen, something that can quite easily get scratched when in the pocket with keys. Getting a white 16GB with 02, they are prioritizing current customers first so probably wont have the thing for a couple months still.

Yes it does. The sides of the case are slightly raised above the face of the phone.

Can someone please answer a question for me?

I'm a heavy user and I've never owned an iPhone before. Since the battery isn't swappable, how is the life of the battery over time? Is it going to last 2 years with heavy usage almost daily? Similarly, is the phone going to get too hot and "wear out" during the same period? It's the one thing I'm really nervous about...

The art and technology of iPhone photography is iPhoneography. 👍

What's new in iPhone 4S's camera hardware
What's new in iOS5's camera software

Basics (NB: Apple doesn't include a manual in the box)
Apple's iPhone 4S (web) User Guide can be accessed (only) from a browser on the iPhone4S.
Apple's iPhone 4S (PDF) manual can be downloaded from their website (after Oct 14)

Guides
Killer Photos with Your iPhone An oldie but goodie. If you have an iPhone 3G/3GS start reading this before selling off that old p.o.s. (and perhaps you'll reconsider upgrading 😏). If you have an iPhone4, or any other cameraphone, you should still get this book as the techniques taught are timeless even if the tech described is ancient.
Create Great iPhone Photos A more recent guide, published after the iPhone 4, that's a great introduction to iPhoneography. For the advanced beginner (it's a little light on basic photo taking techniques). It's a great read with many useful tips.

Accessories
Lens
Jelly Lens filters i.e. fun toys.
Fisheye, Macro, Wide Angle and Telephoto Phone Lenses easily attachable stick-on lens. Best bang for your buck from a reputable seller.
Olloclip the popular three (fisheye, wide angle and macro) in a convenient package. Only fits naked iPhones
iPro Lens System. iPro i.e "professional grade". Heh, iPhone lenses are big business so a big business finally decided to step in. Lenses (wide angle, fisheye) are screwed into the provided case. Expensive.
Factron Quattro A *ahem* premium case with many screw on lenses e.g. wide & micro, tele conversion lens, fisheye, close up lens. (i.e. wide angle, fisheye and macro). Expensive.
The iPhone Telephoto Lens offers 8X telephoto view. attaches to an included case and comes with a mini-tripod.
USBFever lenses Cheapest and widest selection' has everything from lenses to tripods. Ships worldwide but takes a while to arrive (from HongKong)
60~100X Zoomable Microscope one of the more intriguing lenses available 'exclusively' from USBFever. Converts the iPhone into a portable microscope. attaches to an included case.
EnCinema SLR Lens Adapter the adapter has an EOS mount. For the hardcore iPhoneographer
The iPhone SLR Mount Case-adapter combo. Canon EOS model or Nikon model. For the (wealthy) hardcore iPhoneographer
[panorama] Pixeet fisheye lens+app Not really a panorama lens per se as you're still doing most of the work. It's an option though. the fisheye lens attaches to an included case with their "patented magnetic system". *ugh*
[panorama] Kogeto Dot attaches via a 'case' and shots 360º panoramic video
[panorama] GoPano Micro same idea as the kogeto dot, attaches a bigger apparatus via a case and will shot 360º panoramic video

Tripod
Glif An elegant tripod mound and stand for your naked iPhone. Positions the iPhone in landscape on the tripod
iPhone Tripod Holder mount cheaper than the Glif. doesn't work as a stand. positions the iPhone in portrait on the tripod.
XShot iPhone 4 Case a case that can attach universal tripod adapter in either orientation
Gorrilapod/Gorrilamobile a flexible adaptable tripod. The iPhone 4 edition comes with a case. Also provides a free camera app (that doesn't need the accessories to work)
Gymbl/Gymbl Pro a more traditional tripod for the iPhone 4. Has a gimbal (hence the name) which allows for easy panoramic photos. Comes with a case.

Steadicams
Red Pop the simplest way to make the iPhone easier to grip and steady when taking photos. Attaches via the dock connector and pressing the big red button automatically opens the free app. Kickstarter project—funding ended.
iSteadi a standard steadicam. Kickstarter project—funding still ongoing (30 more days to reach their goal).
OWLE Bubo Ergonomic 'case' mount. A film makers platform. The screwed in lens can be replaced with iPhone DSLR lens adapters and the included microphone can be replaced with a lights/flash. Can be placed on a tripod.
Steadicam Smoothee from a big business, the 'professional's solution'. It works, what else can I say?

Microphones
OWLE Bubo comes with a microphone although you get all the other baggage besides
ThumbTacks small, simple, cheap. gives a decent boost to the iPhone's range.
iRig Mic the first handheld microphone for your iPhone

Display Pictures
Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (see similar) connects your iPhone to an iPad to view the pictures on the bigger screen and for backup
Apple Digital AV Adapter connects to any device with HDMI input
Apple TV connects to the iPhone over a WiFi network
Bolle BP-10 Photo Printer the first the only the last printer that connects directly to your iPhone. 4 x 6" prints via the free app.

Decorations
HipstaCase actually useful unlike the rest that follow

What's all this then?

I dropped by phone and the back cracked. If I take it to the genius bar will they replace it for a price? (I've had it for over a year).

Beaten to the response, but just also confirming that it does since it's slightly raised so the face won't touch the surface of a flat table.

In case (hah get it?) anyone hasn't seen one, here is how minimalistic it is:
