You used Siri to engage in a long conversation with your wife over iMessage on your...phone?

It was about buying stuff to clean the washing machine because it stinks and has possibly grown some mold or some crap. She was texting me about it, and I was replying..

it wasn't really that long (I was exaggerating), but there were several back and forths and it was pretty cool, and it certainly did not really warrant a phone call. She knew I was in the middle of studying for major exams i have next week and did not really want to disturb me...

My crusty old Nextel phone will finally go offline by the end of the year- that's when the IDEN thing is dragged out back and shot, right?- so I'll grab my 64GB iPhone 4S once the OMG HYPE! dies down.

I think we should dedicate a thread to Siri and its moments of awe. Tell it "I love you" and see the many responses you will get. It's entertaining.

Things that amazed me so far:

I was driving today looking for a Sprint store I hadn't been to before. I used Siri, picked out the store and it opened up Maps for me and gave me the map and driving directions using location data. We just need it to work with one of the turn-by-turn apps and this will be incredible.

Also, I didn't know it could play you specific songs if you ask it to. That blew me away lol

Be sure to tell Siri thank you.

Also say good night and good morning. Ask her who her favorite robots are and what she's wearing.

That's with only 3 bars btw. Glad I went with AT&T.
*shrug* okay. It wasn't really a contest.

I'll continue to stick with Verizon because they've always treated me well, and I get my unlimited plan.

Do you experience any "rainbow" effect from the clear back? How about flash glare?

Lol sorry didn't mean to come off as a douche. I just mainly stuck with AT&T because of the proclaimed "double speed of Verizon and Sprint" and I wanted to compare since everyone I know has their 4S with AT&T =P

I also stayed with them because of my unlimited data plan.

No worries, lol. But yes, in the words of Gary Whitta, "Slow data is better than no data", which is why I'll always stay wherever I can get unlimited.

I got to mess with Siri earlier today and I have to say its pretty damn cool. I would go as far to say that this could be game changer from a consumer standpoint.

Was there a way to ask Siri a question without having to press the button? Or do you press it each time?

How's everyone's battery life so far? Mine seems to be comparable to my old 3Gs.

Wait really?

My 3GS' battery is terrible...I thought the iPhone 4's battery lasted about twice as long?

Does the Iphone 4s have dual gsm and cdma radios or is every Iphone made for each carrier specifically for that one carrier? Like if I buy a 4s from Verizon to use on Sprint could I?

Thus far (at least in my case) my iPhone 4S' battery just doesn't last quite as long as my 1-year-and-3-months old iPhone 4. That said, it still lasts longer than my old 3G's battery did after I had it for 5 months :P

Mine was at like 98% last night when I went to bed, and it wasn't plugged in. Woke up this morning and it was at 85%. So something was draining it. I spent the day in the city-using it minimally to take a few photos, send messages, check email etc-nothing too heavy. But it was down to 49% from 100%. No music or video or calls or anything.

Incidentally, do you have Find My Friends installed? I do, and I'm sharing my locations with 2 people-and I'm wondering if somehow that might have an effect on my battery even if I'm not using the App.

So I finally set up my iPhone 4S on Sprint.

It's my first iPhone (not my first iOS device...iPad 2).

I managed to activate it through the Sprint Website, despite the ishy cell phone coverage in the area.

I was able to use most of the same apps from my iPad. And the kind folks at the Sprint Store were kind enough to transfer my contacts over from my Blackberry Tour.

My only issues are:

1) The sound/volume seems low when I was talking to my girlfriend. I need to try out another call to verify.

2) I wasn't able to get Applecare+ when I activated it, since I did it online. When I called Sprint they directed me to Apple, who said they don't have my device in their database.

3) Photos can't be dragged and dropped onto the iPhone unlike videos or music. You have to sync photo folders.

Other than that, it's a great device.

I guess the battery life makes sense with the new processor and all.

Hmm if you don't know this already you guys might want to do the standard battery saving tips if you are looking to optimize yours: WiFi/bluetooth/Notifications off, brightness not so high, hard close the apps you aren't using, etc.)

Don't do it. It's a waste of money.

So, any of you guys got speakers/docks for/compatible with your 4S? If so, what are you using? I need a dock to sit by my bed to wake me up in the morning. iPhone by itself isn't loud enough, lol.

I have it installed but I have not signed in yet.

I also made sure to turn off Push (set to Fetch, Manual) and also turned on auto-brightness (and the brightness bar is set to half-way). I also have WiFi and great 3G signal so I doubt it's struggling to find a signal. Aside from that I have no idea what else I could do to improve battery life.

Not a big deal though, the phone's awesomeness more than makes up for it :D

Siri activates automatically if you hold it up to your ear without making a call, so you can pretend you're not actually talking to a fake computer lady.

How do you hard-close apps? Is there some sort of iOS task manager?

Double hit home to bring up the recent app list. Hold down on the app you want until all the icons start to jiggle. Hit the X to close.

This is pretty important for all the new-comers...

Double-press the home button and the "task manager" should pop up. Hold down your finger on any of the apps until the minus symbol appears then close any/all of them. From my experience it makes a big difference on battery life.

Good good. One of my main worries solved

Thanks! I had pretty much everything still running and I have like 50 apps!

Then what's eating my battery life? >_<

Could be a number of things. Constant push notifications, brightness level, GPS, etc. Multitasking is limited but at the same time usually isn't the cause of poor battery life.

Marty Chinn said:
Don't confuse that with everything is running. It's more of a recent app list than a currently running list.

I don't think thats the case, its more like multitasking where the app is paused which I imagine is pretty taxing on performance especially if you have 10+ apps in there

Apps are suspended unless they're using one of the authorized tasks that is allowed to run in the background and even those tasks have a limited lifetime. Any app designed for iOS4 on will likely suspend regardless of what you do. It's not something you should worry about.

We already had that feature before siri...

If you're having battery life issues after updating, make sure your Bluetooth is turned off. It will turn itself back on by default after updating to iOS 5.

Edit - I'm in the wrong thread. Kind of.

Thinking about going over to Sprint from my T-Mobile family plan. Anyone mind sharing some experience with Sprint? Their indiv. plan prices are really tempting. Plus I get a student discount.

Yeah battery life for me isn't great either. It's on par and sometimes below my POS 3Gs which is a little depressing, and I've got all the battery-draining options off.

3G rapes the battery. I have an awesome connection on Telstra with full bars everywhere and super fast 3G coverage but that wouldn't be it, surely?

Sister & Brother-in-Law bought 16GB White 4Ses at a "Best Buy Mobile" store in a local mall, which seems to be a phones-only store.

Interesting to note is that Black iPhones are pretty much impossible to get anywhere in any capacity but white is in fairly decent supply.

Interesting.

Gonna be honest, this battery/heat talk is making me anxious, especially since I've only used dumb-phones that go for days and never heat up -for obvious reasons- but still...expensive upgrades with potential downsides make me go argh. All is good All is good All is good...

What is the video player recommended for playing videos with subtitles? I can't get the regular player to work and I remember someone recommending something else.

battery life seems ok for me. A bit longer than my 4.

The heat is pretty much the same as 4, which if you fret over, just slap a case on.

Not sure if it's ios 5 or this, but my data usage seems to have doubled o_O.

Had to switch out of my $15 plan to $25 one due to passing 200mb in a few days >.>"

Face recognization is kinda finicky in low light.
