I cant tell if my battery life is typical or nt, this is my first iPhone. However, I thought these things had killer battery life and so far mine seems comparable to my palm pre :/
 
Previously I was carrying: keys (left pocket), phone (also left pocket, it was a cheap dumbphone), iPod Touch (right pocket), earbuds (right pocket), wallet (rear pocket).

The new iPhone is taking the place of the iPod Touch, and only my keys in the left pocket. Still getting used to feeling like I'm forgetting something.

Anyone have a good solution for carrying around earbuds? They get slowly destroyed just coiled up in my pocket, and of course they're always tied in knots when I need them.
 
The biggest reason to buy a case is as insurance against an unexpected and unlikely catastrophic drop. Maybe you slip on a wet floor while holding your phone or trip walking up stairs.

It's pretty easy to be careful and attentive, but it's basically impossible to avoid having these kinds of things happen to you once every year or two, and if you happen to be using your phone, the case (might) save it.

Personally I'm going to use my 4S uncovered for a while and see what my usage pattern is for it.

LMAO I thought u were gonna say pants. I was relieved (no pun intended) when I read "pockets".
 
Scratches are generally caused by tiny bits of abrasive material: specks of grit. So putting the phone down on a surface naked might entail putting it down on a tiny grain of sand that has the power to scratch up the phone. The biggest cause of scratches seems to be cleaning cloths that have picked up a little bit of abrasive dirt.

Pockets (that don't contain keys) are reasonably safe because the phone isn't being rubbed against anything with any significant pressure, and as long as you check your cases and cloths for little bits of grit you should be preventing the majority of scratches.

Buy a case? The Apple in-ear headphones come with this:

and I'm sure it should cost peanuts to get something similar for any pair.
 
With regards to battery life, my iPhone 4 seemed to improve after a few charge cycles (I know, I know these batteries are supposed to be more or less immune to that need, but even Apple recommends a full discharge and recharge once a month).

Also, new iterations of iOS often have battery issues. It shouldn't be long until a software update is released, and I should imagine that that will assist with this issue.

My battery is, if I recall correctly, worse than my iPhone 4 was, but certainly FAR superior to that found in my HTC Desire. It's currently at 90% with 57 minutes usage since the last full charge.

I purchased two pairs of those and they die quickly too. The case is cool if ur not keeping it in ur pocket. It's way too bulky. However, the no-tangle Beats by Dre buds have done good by me.

someone already mentioned but bluetooth is on by default so be sure to turn it off. Lowering the brightness also helps. I haven't had my 4s for a day so I can't gauge yet otherwise. But can't be worse than the 3G that lasts um, 4 hours?

What sort of pockets do you have?! ;)

I haven't had mine die on me yet (only recently bought them) but I'm sure I'll be needing to make use of the warranty before the year is up. I've never had a pair of headphones last me a year.
 
For those with battery issues (myself included, despite my push settings being exactly the same as my 3GS) Try reducing the push settings for iCloud. Only variable I can think of. It is under the advanced settings within push settings.

ATT doesn't do that right now, but given that both Sprint and Verizon can and will unlock the phone for people who want to travel abroad, I wouldn't be surprised if ATT adds that feature soon.

Cingular used to do it after so many months I believe, maybe they'll bring back that policy to retain customers.

Again, my 4S heats up like a raging hormonal teen when its charging, I'm wondering if it has to do with charging and WiFi syncing.

So I was up last night at 3AM and did a speedtest on my phone and hit 6.3/1.15Mbps, is this HSPA+ speeds?

That is the odd part. I read emails for about 20 minutes and lost 20% of my battery life. Very frustrating. Brightness is at less than half and I don't game in my phone.

I'd definitely bring it in to an Apple Store and see what they say. Wouldn't be shocked if they swap it right there and then if they've got the inventory.

Just make sure you backup your phone to iCloud or locally before you go so you can restore quickly.

Me be stoopid. I cannot find any advance settings for those. Just the on/off switches.
 
Any Rogers reservation peeps like me get theirs delivered to the store yet? My departure scan was thursday night, and I would have thought if it was on a plane it would have landed somewhere by now!
 
The screen temperature on my 4S is definitely warmer than my 4. The whites on the 4 are more blue-ish, that 4S is more yellow. I think I prefer the way it looked on the 4 but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
 
Well looks like I got a bum iphone 4s. The home button didn't work at all on saturday. It works now but i have other problems. The sound cuts out and my phone seriously can't be shut off. I shut it down and it automatically restarts every single time. Going to take it back tomorrow for an exchange or something.

Sounds very similar to something that happened to my friend's sister, but her phone had just taken a bath in ice water that fell on the table.

Have any water damage at all by any chance?
 
I'm at a 91% at 1 hour and 6 minutes of usage and 4 hours and 15 minutes of standby today. Usage included internet stuff and checking mail. No voice calls so far today. Pretty much what I would expect. I do have Push set to Off and Fetch set to manual.

Also acceptable. Nothing loose and scratchy on the iPhone side is all that REALLY matters.

My "keys" are just a single fob with no protruding metal so it doesn't scratch up my wallet. Any other keys I need are in my car. My wife on the other hand has a keyring the size of a softball in her purse all the time. Crazy.

I was having issues earlier, but I turned it off, restarted my phone, then turned it back on, and it worked after that.

Apparently a lot of people are having issues though. Saw numerous reports on Apple's support forums. It isn't just you.
 
I'm considering Siri all but worthless at this point.. between it randomly just deciding to tell me "I can't do that" on simple tasks.. "Server unavailable".. and voice dictation that simply sits there with the purple balls flashing for 10 seconds and then.. NOTHING..

Just totally unreliable. Voice dictation that has to connect to a server is a bit ridiculous.. my main use for that would be dictating text messages while driving.. and 3g is bad enough, but while driving in a car it's even slower and less reliable.

Tried sending a text on my way to work and it was more distracting to deal with the failures than just typing the damn message would have been.
 
I'm kind of banking on Siri usage settling down or Apple adding more servers to handle the load. When it works, it works great. Being able to set up reminders, dictate text messages, and do quick web searches without using the keyboard is pretty damn handy.
 
Yeah, it's down for me too. Something along the chain is buckling under the load... Given the way it's failing, it appears to be Nuance (or whatever they're using to render voice to text).

Do you have that box checked when it's tethered to the computer with a cable? I don't think restoring from a backup would carry over that attribute, but I may be wrong (assuming that is what you did?)

It throwing some funny error or just never doing it?

It astounds me to think there are people still expecting AT&T to do anything that could remotely be considered competitive or customer-friendly.

If you want an unlocked phone, I think the only safe bet is to buy an unlocked phone. Run it on a cheap prepaid service for a year to offset the extra money you spent on the phone if need be.

The wifi box is checked. When I unplug the phone it disappears from iTunes' device list, whereas on my old 4 it would stay there to allow for wifi syncing.

So I own an Iphone 3G and an Ipad 1. What would I be able to do on a 4GS that I can't do right now that justifies me buying one for €799?

Facetime, multitasking on the phone, notifications on the phone (this is a BIG upgrade if you your phone frequently and don't like being interrupted for text messages or whatever), Siri, vastly improved photo and video recording, more capability for running high-process apps (games and such).

I don't know whether that makes it worth it for you.

also beware when pulling up your pants after a shit (or a sit-down pee if you roll like that). the flip out of the back pocket is the most common end among my surveyed friends.

Really? Has the build quality worsened since the original model, cause I've been rockin' a set of those since like 2004 easily.
