If they did something similar to the soft, "breathing" type LED turn-on they use with the Macs(or at least did years ago), that might be acceptable. The hard, bright red LED flash sucks.
 
Can't believe there are people arguing against the inclusion of an LED, it's an illogical argument to say you don't want something that has almost zero negatives. It just makes life so much more efficient to have your phone tell you when you need to look at it.

For example: your phone is on the desk, you go for a piss, you return and two things could happen,

A) There is an LED on the phone, it's flashing, since you left you've recieved some form of message, be it text, iMessage or Email.

B) There's no LED, you've no idea if you've received a notification, you can either sit down and potentially miss the message or you manually click the home button to check. I know some will argue that checking each time you're briefly away from your phone isn't a hassle but it makes things so much easier and efficient.

You quoted a post with a negative and simply asked "what?". Did you misunderstand it or just ignore it? I don't like LEDs in my room when I'm trying to sleep either...they are very bright and annoying. A phone with a bright LED blinking in the middle of the night is not what I want, and I can't turn it off because I use the alarm.

Beyond that many just don't see the need. My phone vibrates or rings a few times, so if I miss the initial alert I still get it. Or I look at my phone once in awhile since I use it all day regardless.
 
the home button will have a ring that lights up when you get something, the light rotates in a circular motion or just a quadrant could light up indicating what you received,

can easily see something like that in 5

I had to search the net to even find this feature, heh. Just tested it and, no, it doesn't work for voicemail notifications at least. Works on more "active" alerts, like incoming calls and alarms. Flashes three times every few seconds and it's bright enough to wake the dead.

I don't really need the feature, honestly. I've gone for more than four years with phones that don't have LED notification. I was simply trying to find if it was possible to do for the people who do want it.

I said "what" because the comment seemed to imply that the light blinks incessantly, however it's an LED that blinks on notification, so in that case I wouldn't want to sleep if someone was trying to get hold of me. As for the alarm thing, don't see why there couldn't be an option to not have the LED blinking if there's an alarm set, in fact such a thing doesn't really make much sense.

To clarify, nobody needs it, but it's a convenience mechanism that would benefit many people, I'd argue more than not. There's more people who aren't glued to their phone at every second so would benefit from a notification LED than the amount of people who're kept awake at night by some small light off in there room somewhere.

And anyway, the people arguing against it don't have a leg to stand on for this very reason:

If you include an LED but don't want it, it can be disabled

If you don't include an LED but want it, it can't be enabled.

What good is the LED if, like you said, it only blinks a bit when you get a notification? What if you miss the blinking? If I leave my phone for a half hour and come back the LED isn't going to change anything.
 
I've failed as a husband. My wife just shot me a picture of a case she just bought for her iPhone 4S...and despite me linking her to a ton of options that are pleasing to the eye and offer decent protection...she's bought herself an Otterbox Defender.

God...damnit! I'm buying her a Lifeproof case for X-Mas...fuck it all!

Yet I'd still say I've benefitted massively from it's inclusion. Imagine how much you'd benefit if Apple made the LED flash for longer.

Instead of saying what good, I could argue what harm? I don't really tend to leave my phone for vast periods of time, but when I do go to take a whizz, stir some pasta or hell, I'm just watching a loud film and my phone's sat on the chair armrest, the LED light comes in handy, massively.

It's another convenience tool, like Siri is, that doesn't enable anything new yet makes my day to day activities more efficient.

Pretty much. If the iPhone had an LED from the start we wouldn't see anyone asking for it to be removed.
 
I would definitely like the option of a constant notification via LED or 'breathing glow' or whatever. Just some sort of visual that periodically reminds me I have unread messages.

Make it optional so people can turn it off if they please, but I would definitely like it. I really don't see how anyone can logically argue against its inclusion, especially if its something that doesn't change the aesthetic of the phone at all.

The only thing that makes me want a case is the thought of using my iPhone when I run, in which case I would want a Lifeproof just to take the worry away.

Touchpad is pretty much like that. Gradual fade in and out.

Doesn't serve much purpose on a tablet but it's be nice to have on a phone. Baffles me people are opposed to it. An aggressive flash would be obnoxious, but a light softly illuminating to inform you something is waiting is exactly the kind of thing a phone should do.

Haha, I certainly would. I get so absorbed in what I'm doing at times that I forget to check my email for hours (I use Gmail a lot to have conversations with friends and my wife). I didn't have any problems with my last phone because it blinked at me. I'm sure I'll get used to manually checking my iPhone intermittently, but a visual notification would be nice to have.

It's not like Apple couldn't do a nice job with a notification light.
 
So I am at 15% with 3.5 hours of usage and 10 hours of standby, I have an appointment at the apple store @ 9:30. Anyone else having issues?

I just checked and I'm currently at 2.5 hours of usage, 8 hours standby, and the battery is at 64%. The only game I played was Scribblenauts for about 10 minutes. Everything else was photo editing with Photoshop, messing around on social networking stuff (Facebook, G+, Twitter), uploading photos, reading RSS feeds, and browsing GAF. I also took a few photos and made one three minute phone call. I have Bluetooth turned off and I've been connected to Wi-Fi for almost the entire time.

The battery life certainly seems reasonable.
 
Let's see...today I:

Listened to music for 10 minutes via Bluetooth streaming in my car
Listened to music for an hour while waiting/riding the train
Visited websites over 3G during that hour
Listened to music for an hour while at work
Listened to music for an hour while waiting/raiding the train
Visited websites over 3G during that hour
Listened to music for 30 minutes via Bluetooth streaming in my car
Phone on standby otherwise (roughly 8 hours)
Miscellaneous texting throughout the day

So overall:
- 2 hours of listening to music while browsing the internet over 3G
- 1 hour of listening to music
- About 40 minutes of streaming music over Bluetooth
- 8 hours of standby
- Random texting

Battery is at 51% right now.

Yea my phone is busted. All of the stats quoted by you guys seem normal. Mine makes no sense. I have been on wifi all day. I had about 30 minutes of phone calls and the rest is emailing, twitter, and browsing.

I have 2.5 hrs usage, 8.5 hrs standby. Battery is at 76% My battery died a lot faster yesterday. I let it drain to 0 and charged it overnight, and now it seems to function more normally. Have you let it fully drain yet?
 
I'm curious if this is a battery issue or a battery level calibration issue. Has anyone with poor battery life used the phone until it turned off?

If this is true it suggests a battery level calibration issue. Running the battery to depletion and then charging it should only be done to recalibrate the meter, otherwise long term battery life will suffer.

I did a full drain last night I ran a youtube movie on loop until it turned itself off. Still no improvement today.

Yeah frico, run it until the phone shuts off at least, see how long it really lasts.

Brightness set to half with auto-adjust on (default)
Location services turned to on (with Find My iPhone and Find My Friends both having access)
Push Email on for my MobileMe account
Notifications on (although I have next to no apps using them since I hate notifications)

Did that last night. I have one push email account (google) and some push notifications. That is really it.

Fuck me this phone is awesome.

I come from a 3GS and the snappiness of everything is just awesome. Loving retina display as well.

No problems with my battery either. Full charge at 11.00 AM. Listening to podcasts and surfing the net periodically on 3G no less

It's 8.40 PM and still at 41%

My only complaint is that due to the antenna changes, the Silent switch is a bit off in my Pixel Speck HD case

As in, charge it overnight and it will last you until you charge it again that night or the next morning. I've been doing fine on one full charge per day. The lowest I ever got was 15% after leaving the phone uncharged for over 30 hours.
