iPhone - Official Thread

Is predictive text for SMS on the iphone something I have to turn on? I've only seen a few instances where the iphone tries to guess what I'm typing, and it's mostly guesses small words.

I love my iPhone, but also see where it can be improved and what new features they can add to make it better in the future. Apple is picking up steam however, and is doing a lot of things right, it just might not do everything right for every person.

Trust me, I was this close to getting an iPhone, and I DO miss the media capabilities, but features I get with the Nokia balance it out in my opinion. iPhone is a fantastic phone and a fantastic platform, and I will always be a bit jealous of people who have it.
 
I think the best thing about the iPhone being introduced is that it is forcing all the other manufacturers to try and improve their UI and software. Hopefully this results in better phones for everyone.

I will never go back to using the phones sold by AT&T and Verizon where they install their own shitty software to ruin what otherwise would have been a nice phone.

I think it definitely lit a fire under the ass of every other manufacturer, and made them think, 'Hey! People don't like shitty UIs!' The fact that, in the year and a half since it's intro others are still playing catchup is a testament to the lightyears the iPhone UI was ahead of the other UIs.

I totally agree with this as well. The other manufacturers were given a kick in the shorts to start doing new things and being more innovative. That's a good thing for all consumers, no matter which phone they buy.

This makes no difference......

I always frame the shot and hold the camera in place for a second anyway before tapping.
I tried it your way just for kicks and it's the exact same result.

The camera is decent at best, and only with good light.
I do have some wonderful shots of NYC in the daytime.

Hmm... I guess we all have different thoughts on what's decent in a camera, and perhaps I have lower expectations out of a cell phone camera or something. Granted, not every shot I take turns out great, but I get some pretty good photos out of my iPhone most of the time. Daytime does help, I'll grant you that, but even low light photos I've taken have been decent, if a bit on the noisy side.

Yeah, all the noise is the problem with low light.

I asked before but no one answered, is there a "best" way to get the pics off the phone with Windows?

The camera isn't as bad as people make it out to be... could be that many of the people complaining also suck at photography with regular cameras as well.

I have an addendum to this. Fido is doing it too now, you replace your old contract with a new one and you can get the hardware upgrade price without paying the extra admin fees (you do pay $50 extra if your voice plan is under $30, but I think Rogers does that too).

I solved the problem of picking between iPhone and e71 by buying them both. Iphone for personal and e71 for work use. Still waiting for the Nokia to arrive, enjoying my first ever Apple product in the meantime.

congrats, the iphone is a great multimedia device. the Nokia e71 looks great but I'm a bit put off from the big keyboard.

not yet. the iphone dev team say they'll have an unlock solution for an iphone 3G in a couple weeks. maybe longer?

but, be warned, you'll have to pay a fortune to get a 3G iphone and cancel an AT&T contract. or get an unlocked phone off ebay.

Really? How did you arrange this (over the phone, at a Wireless store)? If you went to a store, could you tell me which store? Are you on the $23 corp plan?

I called Rogers Wireless and was then transferred to a special corporate accounts department where I was told the iPhone 3G would cost either $499 or $199 + my corporate plan. Either way I'd have to sign on for 3 years.
 
besides the recently released WinAdmin for $11.99, and Mocha VNC, are there any other RDP or VNC apps out there? Anything for Yahoo messenger, or IRC?

or craigslist, thats where i bought my iphone, not 3G though.
 
If all the music I have in Itunes was rip from my cd's will I be able to connect my iphone to that PC and later connect it to my works pc without loosing everything. Can I transfer songs between each other? Nothing was purchased through Itunes.

After getting used to the iPhone's screen size, there's no way in hell I can go back to a typical smartphone screen size, with the keyboard taking 60% of the area of the device. The screens are just too small and claustrophobic. That, for me, far outweighs any other positive of a physical keyboard.

That's understandable, but how much of the touchscreen is taken up by the keyboard when you bring it up? Probably the same amount, and if you're a heavy texter/emailer like I am, you probably have the keyboard up there most of the time. Just here, you don't have to pull up the keyboard all the time.

In terms of pixels per inch the e71 probably comes out ahead, so the pics are a bit sharper. I guess it's a tradeoff as to whether you want larger, a slightly more washed out screen, or a smaller but sharper one.

err Washed out wow what iPhone have you been using.

I've used/been around Symbian based Nokia phones since the 7650 and none of them compare/have compared to the iPhone. Infact in my opinion the Symbian OS has gotten worse not better with slower menu/general usage (Especially with lots of Applications installed) but the last Symbian I used was the N91 which was the first S60v3 version of the Symbian OS so they may of gotten faster. They also made it very ackward to install new Applications with people having to sign applications for there phone.
But what really turned me off Symbian was when they started announcing Feature Packs to the OS which could only be found on new phones but the older phones were perfectly capable of many of the features found in the FP.

For what I use my Phone for (Browsing, music, games, videos and the usual Phone stuff) there is no other phone that compares

I totally agree. The pictures are enough to capture the scene and show people what's happening. Nothing I'd turn around and print, but I don't print any photos.

Nothing makes me think that, ppi is a compromise if screen size is enlarged while resolution is fixed. You see it with the N95 display being washed out compared to the N82, because the N95 display is larger but with the same res. I already own an iPod touch, and while I love the big screen, I think the fonts and icons look a bit sharper on the e71, because of the smaller screen.
 
Question: My brother's just bought himself an iPhone and is under the impression he'll be charged for using our home wifi to connect to the internet. I think this sounds a bit... unlikely. Am I right?

They are all completely out of order and renamed when I use it, makes it hard to find the ones I wanted, or a chance of saving over a picture I had because the name was changed.

It seems like the iPhone launch mania has calmed down. I went to the Apple Store this morning and they had six inch stack of iPhone vouchers and only five or so people in line. It took maybe 15 minutes from the time the transaction started before I was out the door since I wasn't porting a number.

Wasn't the case at my Apple Store today. I had to drop by to pick up a new power adapter for my MacBook, and there was quite a long wait for the iPhone. I asked the guy selling me the adapter about it, and he said it's like that every day still.

I fucking hate this phone since the 2.0 update. Got another fucking apple logo screen of death today and was stuck without a phone for the entire time I was out and now I have to do another goddamn 2 hour restore to fix it. ugh

Have you updated to 2.01 yet? That seems to be a lot more stable for me. I haven't had my phone crash in a few days now.
