Man, i wish Apple would get a 32GB+ version of the phone out, because I really like the white phone - I don't understand all the hate it gets. The only thing that might make it better would be if they changed all the black on the front of the phone to white too, but I'd have to actually see it done (photoshop someone?) before deciding whether it would look alright though.

My impression from seeing that one in the apple store was that the white model just didn't seem to fit - as others have hinted here, having a white shell doesn't make much sense when the face of the phone is still black. And the pearl white shell...kinda reminds me of the bottom of the DS lite, as opposed to the top which has that sort of translucent plastic look to it.

Still a fine device either way; it just seems like the white model could have used some more thought to it (as with the photoshop mockup above, which looks great!)

NICE!! I'd love that. Gives the phone a more consistent look, because as it stands right now you've got three major color components in the casing - white, chrome, and then black. Aside from the screen image itself (which could be remedied if Apple would give us a background color/picture feature) it's a much more consistent look.

I know a lot of people like the white front images, but I think it would distract from the image on the screen when I'm actually using it. I like that the border on the front is still all black as the other models. It keeps the focus on the screen.

Oh, and today i tested out the GPS while riding in the car (I have a charge station/ dock) and it was pretty amazing. Very accurate and it tracked me all day without issues. I can't wait for the 1st person view, turn by turn apps to start coming out. :D

I'm in the silent minority who think the white looks better than the black. Rarely do you see the device from an angle where you can see front and back simultaneously. In practice, the black back looks the worst of all three so far, because it's such a fingerprint magnet.

It still tickles me to no end that men in the line in Columbus were calling the white iPhone girly and gay after finding they were out of blacks while remaining happily in the line to buy one

I think the white looks leagues better than the black - in the real world. I'm not silent: I'll scream it from the (virtual) rooftops over here.

In promo photos, the black is slicker, but it looks filthy after it's been handled for a few minutes. Last month, i thought I'd be getting a black, but I changed my mind after seeing unboxing shots early last week.

White Rocks. Plus, it brings back nice memories of my 4th gen clickwheel ipod. :)

ok, what's going on with this website? my ipod touch is pushing everything fine and recieving pushes from my laptop, but the site will never acknowledge my account. is anyone else completely unable to get into the site?

I've been able to get into it. Though I've had some weird things happen. A contact I added on my phone this afternoon was somehow removed a couple hours later. And any mail with a subject that wraps to the next line throws the whole formatting of the rest of the list out of whack. They launched a bug-filled service.

The back of the white is damn sexy, arguably better than the black if you don't take the front into account, IMO. But as you say, having the white back while the front looks like it was designed exclusively for the regular black version is just odd.

I'm having the same exact problem. I can use the @mobileme.com email on my iphone, and i can see my iDisk on my iMac... but i've never been able to get into www.me.com.

Actually, no, you can't... or at least, not without meeting some heavy restrictions -

You're only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again.

I was hoping to forward my hotmail e-mail to me.com so it would get pushed to my iPhone like gmail is doing for me... but no... so much for that idea.

Indeed. I feel justified in waiting for my black 16GB after seeing this picture.

I've got a couple questions:

1) What's the best program to convert DVDs and xvid/divx files over to an iPhone compatible format in a easy way?
2) Is there any schedule of when apps will be released to the store (ie PSN releases content every Thursday) or they'll just be released at any given time?
3) Is there some site that is going to keep track of when new apps are released because it doesn't look like there's an easy way to organize by release date so you can see what's new. I don't trust the What's New to be totally accuarate.

3G iPhone is so bittersweet for me. My GF got the white one and the whole experience of lining up and 'camping' in front of the store was actually fun. Never thought I'd be one of those people, LOL. 3G iPhone is an awesome product but it's launch also caused my hdd to crash (I have the original iPhone and updating to 2.0 caused the crash - still haven't had the issue resolved as of right now) and I'm somewhat bitter about it. Apple couldn't do anything for me because they were focused on the iPhone launch :\

1. iSquint, OSX. I don't know about on PC.
2. Random times, it seems.
3. No idea, but will probably have hundreds soon.

It looks like things are a bit worse than that right now. Apparently schemy app developers are adding non alphabet characters to the beginning of their app names so that they show up at the top of lists more often. Looks like Apple left things as something of an early wild west. :lol

Heh, I was afraid that was going to happen given how things are organized and you're more likely to look at the stuff that shows up early on in the list rather than later. I just wish there was some easy way to keep up with when good apps get released because as it stands now, I feel like some good gems are going to get lost in the flood.

Don't know what you can do with xvid/divx, but Handbrake can tackle DVDs.

So yeah, from the sounds of it, Japan's iPhone launch went better than anyone predicted. There are reports from The Guardian that SoftBank's main store in Tokyo had a lineup of 1500 people, and unconfirmed reports that SoftBank stores are getting 50 calls a day since launch asking about it.
Anyone know any more about it? I'm kind of interested to watch Apple stomp all over the "read-the-manual-50-times-and-still-not-know-how-to-use-it" cell phone market that Japan has had for the past 5 to 10 years.
(seriously, we just got ugly and unintuitive stuff here, but to access some of the features of a "keitai" is almost completely impossible... it's pretty bad)

Yup, so I'm pissed. Went to AT&T's map, entered my address..."perfect 3G." Brought the phone home, no such luck. Not a big deal, I have wireless at home and the Edge signal strength seemed a lot better.

What I really wanted it for was at my office. Entered the office address on AT&T's map, "perfect 3G." Get to work this morning...no fucking 3G.

What a bunch of horse shit.

So there are definitely issues with the battery life on 2.0 for me. I thought things had resolved themselves yesterday, but checked my iPhone before bed last night and got the 20% left error. Only things I used it for yesterday was to check e-mail and made one half-hour long phone call. I did fire up the Net News Wire App. Not sure if or why it would be draining the battery, but may uninstall it to be sure.

Before upgrading to 2.0 I could easily go a couple of days without charging, but now it's an every day thing.

I'm on 2.0 and my battery life is fine. Do you have push turned on? I turned that off immediately.

It was on, but I wasn't having anything pushed. Turned it off now. We'll see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!

I like how the advice on getting better battery life on the 2.0 software or the 3G phone is to start turning off some of the big selling points. I'm seeing the same thing all over some of the mac forums. Turn off 3G, turn off push, etc. Almost may as well go back to 1.1.4. :(

Turning off Push doesn't bother me for now, since I'm not using it, but yeah, I agree. Hopefully they release a battery optimized version of the firmware in the near future.

you were very tame compared to what I assumed I would hear on the podcast. That was disappointing.

Just to salt the wound a little bit, I went over to the Apple Store at noon yesterday, walked out with one at 12:20.

I was hoping they'd do well too.
Nice job Apple!

I agree that the white looks better. The black ones looked kind of cheap.

Quick question before I run out the door to go buy one of these things:

Seeing as 3G is kicky-fast internet, could the iPhone update my subscribed podcasts as I travel, either through iTunes or RSS? It would make my commutes home so much less boring (asides from the videos, internet, music, games, etc. :D )

which models are you talking about? I've been a Softbank customer since they were still J-phone, and I've never had that bad of an experience with a Japanese cell. Yes Japanese manufacturers are a bit..controlling in what they allow. But ease of use has never been an issue on any of the Sharp or Toshia models I've owned.

That being said I am contemplating an iPhone, because the UI just looks so damn nice.

Wow, 1 million iPhones sold already just over the weekend.

Apple Sells One Million iPhone 3Gs in First Weekend

CUPERTINO, California—July 14, 2008—Apple® today announced it sold its one millionth iPhone™ 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on Friday, July 11. iPhone 3G is now available in 21 countries—Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US—and will go on sale in France on July 17.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

I know that my local store ran out of 16GB phones on the first day and sold out of 8GB's the second day. I forgot to purchase a dock and I went back yesterday to pick one up and nearly all the iPhone 3G accessories were sold out (except for some pink cases). Damnit :(

10 million AppStore downloads too, WOW:
“The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Well here's a friggin' pain in the ass -- Back at work today, if I leave 3G on in the building I get "No Service." If I turn off 3G, I get 5 bars, but the "dot" in the middle of the Edge icon (which, I still dunno what that one means). I guess 3G doesn't do so well when you're in a building???

Uh...I'd hope not.

I used my Verizon's EVDO Rev. A all the time indoors.

There is no way to update podcast on the iphone. The best way to do it is to bookmark the RSS feed in Safari.

Apple RSS feed is really nice but you can only see one RSS feed at a time.

Well, that was an awesome experience. I have my phone on vibrate, so I assume all applications will recognize this and not play music.

Instead, I fire up some Aurora Feint while in the office bathroom and of course, music starts blaring.

What the hell.

Different hardware. When I was on T-Mobile (worst year of my life!) I had terrible luck getting data signals, and sometimes voice, indoors, depending on the environment. On Verizon it worked great. CDMA has better penetration of buildings from what I've heard, although I've had no complaints with AT&T's GSM.

You might want to try the beta of Google Reader's updated iPhone interface. I like it MUCH better than the default Safari support for RSS feeds.

I guess I see vibrate mode as the iPhone won't initiate any sounds, ringing, texting, e-mails, etc. but will still play sounds if you initiate the process, such as listening to music, playing games...

It's easy to turn the volume down when doing those things.

but it can't be turned down until you start it, which make office bathroom gaming annoying as hell.

I hate Google Reader. Every time i'm in a feed and want to go back to my list of feeds it takes me back to Google More Apps page.

Anyways i just download NetnewsWire. It rocks. But the best way to grab a pod cast is still the RSS feed in Safari.
