Once again: if you really want to have a custom background, you can jailbreak your phone and have it in less than 5 minutes.
I see custom backgrounds as being an order of magnitude less important than all the current crashing and memory leaks, copy and paste issues, plus push notification additions that Apple needs to deal with first.
Maybe Apple will have resources necessary to allow for skinning in a 6 months to a year, but I'm glad they're not bothering with that now.
Why should I have to void my warranty just to have a wallpaper on my phone when most other phones allow me to do it. I love the iphones functionality and that is why I purchased it but I wish Apple would give on just this one feature. It makes all kinds of sense. Other backgrounds can be "simple, easy to read and elegant".
