Hey guys, My jailbroken iphone 3g (FW2.0) locked up last night. Its stuck on the startup screen and wont turn off. Its been like this for about 6 hours. I cant get it to turn off and I cant get iTunes to see the device to restore it.

Any suggestions?

I had the same issue.. upgrade to 2.0.1 now. It fixed the issues for me. To get it to restart, hold down the home and power button for about 10 seconds then let go, your phone should reboot.

I'm quite enjoying my 2.0.1 jailbroken iphone. I like the fact that installer is kinda back.

I tried a demo of the iPhone out and I honestly couldn't get used to typing. My thumbs are too big or something. It was decent in landscape, but portrait felt impossible. Even worse than T9 which I suck at.

Is it something you gradually get used to?

Once you get used to it, you will be able to type out a paragraph in about 10 seconds.

I notice a bit of lag with it though, especially on sites such as GAF. I hope they fix this.

Really? I kept hitting the wrong keys. The on screen buttons are so small :(

The predictive text input is really good with the iPhone. It takes a little while to get used to but now I just fly on the keyboard and as long as I'm close to the spelling the word I want, the autocorrect will get it.

If you decide to go this route, call Rogers/Fido and tell them to disable all data on your iPhone. Otherwise it'll switch to 3G or Edge automatically as you get a weak WiFi signal and the charges will kill you, your family, and your descendants.
even the sales rep (who was surprisingly super nice) said that if i decided i dont want data to call and get them to deactivate 3g and edge. he said recently some guy got a $9000 bill full of data charges and is trying to take rogers to court over it because he thought that since he didn't take the data plan that he would just use wifi. Well little did he know he was still accessing 3g. If rogers charges $15 per mb then that guy probably used just under 700mb of data. Some people are ridiculously stupid, no way he wins that lawsuit.

thanks by the way for the deal you alerted me to in the canada deals thread.

NM...it seems like converting via dvd decrypter first and then putting into handbrake works.

While I'm not nearly that fast, yes, you do get used to it after a while. The improvement is massive.

They keyboard should not be something that holds you back from buying the phone.

um, no. As an iphone owner, it's nowhere near as effective as a physical keyboard. I don't like to write anything longer than text messages with it. But you do get used to its shortcomings and get better with it over time.

Firestorm said:

It's a barrier you need to get past. The feeling that you're typing everything wrong, and backspacing all the time. That's what I was doing initially and I didn't like the keyboard at all. But once you realise that the phone fixes all the words for you even if you don't hit a single correct key, and it gets the right word 95% of the time. You really do start to type really fast. I have big hands myself and just press keys wildly. It's only a problem when it's cold and I'm really missing the mark on the letters (like, 2 letters away from my intended target instead of 1).

Firestorm said:

One suggestion to keep in mind while you'r egetting use to it is that you should press the key you want, but instead of releasing, hold the key down. The key that you pressed will magnify to let you know which one it is you've pressed. If it's the wrong key, simply slide to the one that you want, then release. It'll seem a bit slow at first, but it helps you to get the feel for it, and you'll be typing faster in no time.

I have rather large hands and big thumbs as well, but I can type quite quickly and seldom have any issues with it now.

Hm. Ok. I'll give it a go if I can negotiate a cheaper data option off Rogers. It's the N95 or the iPhone. iPhone's a cheaper phone but has a more expensive (but less restrictive) data plan. N95 has better features but web browsing and larger screen on the iPhone is making me lean that way.

Either way I gotta get one by the end of the month because all the good promotions with Rogers ends this month :( N95 will be classified as a smartphone next month and loses its eligibility for the cheap data plan. The regular unrestricted data plan goes from $30 for 6GB to $100 for 6GB @_@

GAF, whats the best video converter out there? I have a butt load of content I want to get on my iPhone but an annoyed at the inability to simply drag and drop files.

Same as this but for Windows?
And also what do you if any of you do, use to convert windows media center video files? (DVR-MS)

Thanks.

K sorry for a possibly asked a million times question (although maybe not with how the 3G's are) but what's the status of unlocking them? A friend wants to get one and unlock it despite knowing the cost and I'm not gonna argue with him.

I've actually had iPhone haters at work challenge me with their "superior" physical keyboards. In a straight up challenge, typing the same sentences, I destroyed every challenger. Blackberry's, BlackJacks, Q's, it doesn't matter.

The iPhone has the fastest mobile keyboard I've ever used.

Someone told me that if you try and sync the songs from itunes onto your iphone that was already synced to your ipod will equal to some itunes lock up. Is this true, or was I lied to? I am pretty new to itunes, so I am not sure at all.

Completely untrue. Couldn't be more untrue. I sync my 80GB iPod and iPhone every day. I've had them both plugged in at the same time.

OK, So I used winpwnd and upgraded my firmware and everything seems ok but when I went to restore my Iphone everything loaded correctly other than my music and videos. When I connect to Itunes, its still asking me to restore my phone. It wont revert back to normal Itunes.

Is there any way to turn off DFU mode and upload my files unto my iphone.

Thanks in advance
You are not in DFU mode, just choose the setup a new iPhone option. This has happened to me, and I have had no problems.

Just curious, what are the restrictions on both plans? Does the unrestricted plan allow for tethering?

No unlock tool for 3Gs just yet. Soon though.

I did that once and everything but my media loaded correctly. When it was finished restoring Itunes doesn't let me put my music back on the iphone, it just keeps wanting to restore the phone.

I know its still in DFU mode because I can turn off the phone now, by just holding down the power botton.

Jobs also admitted to the existence of the application "kill switch" that made headlines across the Mac web last week. iPhone forensics expert Jonathan Zdziarski had discovered what appeared to be a blacklist for third-party apps on Apple's servers that is downloaded and stored on the iPhone. At the time, Zdziarski said there was little evidence that the iPhone's OS was checking the list, and some theorized that it was merely to block apps from accessing the iPhone's CoreLocation capabilities when they weren't supposed to. However, when speaking with the WSJ, Jobs openly acknowledged that Apple has the capability to remotely shut down a third-party app in the event that a rogue developer decided to start stealing user data. "Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," he said.

Hate to say, but I told ya so...The rest of the article is quite positive, pointing out the amazing amount of money the app store has made already.

I would have to agree. I tried typing on my friend's blackberry and it was not as easy as the iphone's keyboard.

It's kind of funny that because you don't really need to pay strict attention to what you are typing (because the correction is so amazing) you can really just hammer away and it gets about 90% of what you're trying to say (excluding proper nouns).

Highly dubious. I just don't see how that's possible, and even if so, I'm pretty sure that's not the case for most everyone. Speed typing with the iphone pad produces a ton of errors unless you have freakishly thin fingers, which I'm not ruling out in your case.

BTW, what do I have to do to enable visual voicemail? When I hit the voicemail button it just dials to my voicemail like every other phone.

IIRC, the first time you access the voicemail, it walks you through setting it up.

You know how well the autocorrect works right?
I don't care anymore when I miss a couple letters as it usually gets what I want.

As for the visual voicemail.
No go on unlocked phones if yours happens to be.

I feel the same. Once you get past the mental block of "oh no, hit the wrong key," you're a speed demon on the keyboard.

Yep, this was my problem too. I had a V3 and I could type like a madman on it. When I got the iPhone, I had a hard time getting good speed. I would go slow to make sure I spelled everything correct (and used the backspace key a lot) because I didn't trust the text correction. But once I got over that, I can now type faster than I ever could on the V3. It's really quite amazing that the text correction gets it right 95% of the time. I maybe have to use the backspace once a paragraph, or maybe once every 5 texts or so. You just have to trust it.

I had the same first experience as you and I almost decided against the iPhone based on that first impression. But then I had my friend let me try it out again and, I don't know, for some reason it just clicked the second time and typing was pretty intuitive. Now my iPhone is arriving today or tomorrow, and while I'm pretty sure I won't be blazing the first day I get it; based on my second experience with the phone I'm confident that it can be very fast with practice.

I see folks raving about the autocorrect but it really hasn't been that great for me. Again, I think for speed and accuracy, my 8525 keyboard was tops. Although, I've only had the iphoen for just over a week, so I may change my mind later on. So far, though, I've been frustrated with having to go in and correct stuff, which takes forever if the iphone doesn't get it right.

And my phone isn't unlocked, I have an ATT account which I did the whole upgrade thing for and even then, the first time I hit the voicemail button, it just dialed my voicemail number.

It would intersting to compare a phone that has both physical keys as well as predictive texting like the iPhone to touchscreen predictive texting.

Yeah, it'll take more than a week to get used to. Give it a month or so and you should be faster. I've had mine for more than a year and I love the keyboard.

Okay so the phone has been jailbroken and you have restored and once the restore is completed this keeps coming up asking you to restore again, correct?

It took me about two weeks to get used to it. I've had it for a month now, and I can fly on the keyboard.

I have big fat fingers, and I literally destroyed them. Once you get the hang of it, there is no physical keyboard that can compete.

It would, actually. I think the hardware keyboard plus software wold work best, beating out the iPhone and any other hardware-only keyboard out there.

but this just goes to show how Apple effectively used software on the iPhone to do what other manufacturers never bothered to try.

If Windows Mobile or RIM devices had the software correction, they would be on a much higher level than the iPhone for typing.

Alright Tobor, before you put that out there, what about a device that has both a physical keyboard as well as iPhone's predictive texting? Like the E71? :-)

It would be hard to test, since I know no one(other than you) who has one. Figure out a way, and I'm down.

By the way, I usually type with one thumb in portrait mode. I still won.

Well, one place that the onscreen keyboard trashes the physical one is that it can have contextual keys on it and can be updated. For instance, when in the web browser, the keyboard has a ".com" button on it, and when the 2.0 update was added, you can now hold the ".com" button for a few seconds, and an option comes up to select ".net", ".org", ".edu" etc.

It's a huge advantage once you get use to the onscreen typing.

I have a feeling it might be wash actually, i have an ipod touch which for all intents and purposes is the same as the iphone, but the keys in both the e71 and the iphone/touch are kinda cramped. I think it would be either wash/e71 for protrait, and wash/iphone in landscape.

Too lazy to test it myself though.

One thumb in portrait mode? Damn. You should post a video on YouTube cause now I'm REALLY doubting how you can beat out my 8525 with a full QWERTY and predictive texting with one finger in portrait mode. That's some impressive abilities right there.

btw, anyone have any ideas on what I can try to get visual voicemail? :(

At&t. I bought my iphone in Chicago (though that wasn't were my phone number is from), and the very first time I hit the voicemail button, it called my voicemail button. I never got the setup stuff.
