At&t. I bought my iphone in Chicago (though that wasn't were my phone number is from), and the very first time I hit the voicemail button, it called my voicemail button. I never got the setup stuff.

Contact AT&T. When I first used it, there was a step by step process that helped you establish a password and a voicemail message.

But I already had my voicemail set up and the greetings are all the same as before I had the iphone. Was I STILL supposed to get that setup process to happen even though I had voicemail set up previous to iphone?

One thumb in portrait mode? Damn. You should post a video on YouTube cause now I'm REALLY doubting how you can beat out my 8525 with a full QWERTY and predictive texting with one finger in portrait mode. That's some impressive abilities right there.

btw, anyone have any ideas on what I can try to get visual voicemail? :(

Yeah, I'm not saying I should be in the olympics or anything, but I find with the size of my fingers(large), and the accurate predictive input, it's easier to type with 1 thumb in portrait mode. Another benefit of portrait mode is the eyeglass is easier to move around in the increased vertical space in portrait mode.

Debate aside, I'm just too used to the virtual keyboard to go back at this point. It does exactly what I need it to do quickly.

I was not an AT&T customer before the iPhone, but even still there should probably be some kind of conversion process for visual voicemail that is done when you buy the iPhone. Again, call AT&T and have them take care of this. For the rest of us, it was an extremely simple process.

I was on AT&T before the iPhone. You have to "redo" your voicemail, and if I remember correctly, you lose any voicemails you had before the switch. It's a completely different voicemail system.

It would be hard to test, since I know no one(other than you) who has one. Figure out a way, and I'm down.

By the way, I usually type with one thumb in portrait mode. I still won.

heh, no need to get hyped up. there's no challenge forthcoming. :D

I just think that a system that used the exact same text prediction and correction system as the iphone, but with real keys would be faster than the iPhone with only the software implementation. Well, for most people, at least. you seem like a typing prodigy, to be honest :)

Not that I want Apple to go with a hardware keyboard. I'm fast enough with just the software and screen.

And that's really the key. Let's say there is some uber physical keyboard that's faster. It would either make the phone thicker to accommodate a slide-out, or shrink the screen. Both of those compromises are unacceptable, especially when the keyboard as is works fine.

Definitely not hyped up by the way, I was joking.

Just curious, what are the restrictions on both plans? Does the unrestricted plan allow for tethering?
Yes you can tether on the $30 for 6GB data plan. You can't on the Unlimited Mobile Browsing plan. The "Unlimited Mobile Browsing" one is the most confusing options to ever come out of Rogers or Fido, which is really saying something.

Okay so the phone has been jailbroken and you have restored and once the restore is completed this keeps coming up asking you to restore again, correct?
27-iphone-restore-5.jpg

Exactly....Ive restored it twice now and it never fully restores the music and vids.

Do you think I should run through the process all over again.?

The phone works perfectly and its jailbroken, itunes does'nt want to recognize it because its still in its DNF mode.

Thanks

It never restores the music or vids, just user info. You have to manually put the music and vids back.

Every Time I go to sync with my old play list, IT continuously ask me to restore. It wont get past that menu into the ordinary Itunes interface.

I appreciate your patience, thanks.

Did you choose "setup as a new iPhone" after you restored once?

I've read the last few pages of the thread and I see a lot about jailbreak. I get that it allows you to do stuff to your phone that isn't normally allowed...but I'm not really clear. Anyone want to clarify exactly why I'd jailbreak a phone? And whether there are dire consequences...

enzom21 said:

No, does that make a difference. I figured I would just restore to my previous setting and then everything would be ok.

I already have an AT&T account, why would I want to set up another one?

Choose the setup as a new phone option, it won't make you setup a new account after you have already restored. It will just say thank you and go back to the regular iPhone screen.

It allows you to run programs that would never appear in the app store, that is pretty much it. There are rarely any dire consequences, you can always restore to the official firmware.

It gives the iphone a deeper level of custumization that has not been offered by apple. also it cuts the tether from ITunes and apple, which leads to new apps that wouldnt be allowed otherwise.

Honestly check youtube for jailbroken ipod apps and see what is possible.

So Jailbreaking is something I should pretty much definitely do--it's pretty safe and leads to some fun customization?

I'll check out youtube. Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I posted some pics of my homescreen with different icons, there is also a program that allows you to have a video wallpaper and video ringtones.

Im not home yet, but if this works, I will be estatic. Thanks for being so patient.

Hmm, a primitive file viewer went up on Cydia today too.

That looks like a good app though, I didn't think something like that would be allowed though.

Check the edit, they just allowed two and FTP support!

Wow at the FTP support.

I'm still anxiously awaiting an SSH and IRC client for iPhone. Surely someone is making them...
There are unofficial apps for this, and don't think you'll see them on the app store.
But! I want to be wrong!

Apparently DataCase just pops up directly in Finder on a Mac and you just drag files over. No need to FTP or use a webbrowser. I might pick that up too.

Yeah I know there are apps available for a jailbroken phone. But I'm not interested in going that route. Everyone keeps asking me when I'm going to do it and I feel obliged to say "yeah, soon" even though I never plan to. I work with very technical people so the idea of someone only interested in running the phone in its original state is rather confusing for many. I personally just don't need any more extra hassles. I deal with enough technical problems day in day out and the last thing I need is more of them.

Exactly my position.

Sums things up pretty well I think.

Yeah pretty much where I'm at too. I know jailbreaking is pretty easy, but at the end of the day, I have no problem with the phone in its official state, and no desire to jailbreak, whether it causes technical issues or not.

dallow_bg said:

Of course not. I'm just saying. Venting perhaps because many people think it's just assumed I'd be jailbreaking my phone (I work in IT).

enzom21 said:
And even that part is not really that difficult...

It isn't a matter of difficulty. Just a matter of avoiding problems if I can. I recently just finished installing and configuring a HP itanium unix server running oracle 10. As I said. I get enough technical problems to work through without potentially creating more for myself.

There was more reason to jailbreak before 2.0 came out, obviously.

Heck, I'm still waiting for the app store version of the Lights-Out game that came out last year for Installer. I know there are some other versions on the store, but they all look cheap compared to the original.

Still waiting for Mobile Scrobbler for lastfm. :(

My most missed app.
Oh, and iFlickr.

for my own info, what does the mobile scrobbler app do that the last.fm app (from the store) doesn't do?

does the mobile scrobbler app keep track of the music you play via the ipod app?

Yes, MrOctober, it has been.

It did exactly the same thing and more. Though I hardly used the app itself.

I simply had it keep track of the iPod app as you mentioned and let it post to my lastfm in realtime as I listened to whatever.
That was my fave feature.

The only hassle is jailbreaking it.

And hey, I'm not trying to convince you to do it or anything.

Err, bullshit. The hassle is not being able to apply any updates until a new jailbreak-safe patch comes along. Ive got my iPhone jailbroken and am about to apply the 2.02 version, but to say jailbreaking doesn't add extra time and complexity, not to mention uncertainty in the updating process is just silly. There's ALWAYS a risk, albeit small, of bricking, etc the phone.

Slurpy said:

You can still apply an update, your phone just won't be jailbroken any more.

enzom21 said:

True. But I'm running an unlocked AT&T iPhone on Rogers, so obviously that would be a problem. If I had a legit phone here, I don't think Id bother with jailbreaking, especially with the Appstore now and the rather pathetic selection of 2.0 jailbreak software.

Perhaps it's been asked already... but what are the killer apps for a jailbroken iphone?

Jailbreaking the PSP was a no brainer (er... we just called it "hacking" but same thing)... Flawless PS1, NES, CPS and MVS emulators, which for a dedicated gaming machine made perfect sense.... But I still haven't seen a program for the jailbroken iphone that makes me think "Wow... I NEED this"... seems like a novelty so far, at least for my needs, but perhaps I've not heard all there is to offer....

Sorry for asking an OT question here but there are enough apple fans here to answer this quickly... When will apple hold a conference to refresh their ipod/laptop/imac lines for this fall? Isn't usually this month? Thanks.
