I haven't tested speeds out yet but another thing I noticed is that my PS3 which is 5 feet from where I'm sitting only shows up as 2 bars for some reason. I would think in that proximity, it would be a full set of bars. Ya, I think something is off. I wonder if this is how they gain some battery life on the 3GS. Sounds like they cut the power to the antenna.

I have noticed the same thing lately with my wi-fi signal on my iPhone. When I am sitting at my computer desk, the wireless FiOS router is about 2.5ft from me and my iPhone wi-fi strength is at 1 arc (or bar). When I am at work, and the wireless router is much further away from me, I get full arcs(bars) on the wi-fi icon.

I too am curious as to why this is happening.

Hmm, I haven't tried 3.0 yet, but I've always noticed that when I'm not 'using' it, the wifi signal will sometimes show up as 1 or 2 'bars'. Yet as soon as I fire up Safari or something, it will jump back up. Not saying that's the problem (obviously some of you are having speed issues).

Good to see at least that not everyone is having the issue.

I've always wondered why people really think the bars in the wireless are a linear representation with 0 meaning none and each bar representing 33% or something. I always saw it as some signal, some more, strong. It fluctuates on day to day and firmware to firmware. They can change what each bar actually means, so I never even pay attention.

How did you activate it? iTunes won't let me activate my imported US phone.

You need to use Pwnage tool to build a custom 2.2.1 firmware, and use iTunes 8.1 to restore it to your iPhone. I couldn't get this to work when I entered DFU mode, so skip that part, just do it as if it was a official firmware.

You also cannot use QuickPWN to do this, it will fail (when you try and install 3.0).

After you have done that you will have a 2.2.1 iPhone, activated and jailbroken. Upgrade iTunes to 8.2, and use alt/shift *UPDATE* and select the iPhone 3.0 IPSW file. Make sure you hit update and not restore. Also make sure you get the right firmware for your 2G iPhone, the 3G one is different (you want 1,1 not 1,2).

After that is done you will have a working, activated iPhone running 3.0, but it will not be jailbroken (until the dev-team release a new QuickPWN, tough luck).

I always took it as a general representation of signal strength so it worrries me when I should have strong signal and it shows up as weak.

Yeah I get that. My wifi fluctuates for all my devices for apparently no reason. It's beyond my controlvso never worry about it.

I'm at home now, I'm on 3.0 GM and my wifi is fine. I'm also way the fuck away from the router now so I don't think there's any issues.

I'm on my university campus which has wifi everwhere and it's full now and has been before. Not sure where the wireless points are on campus but I'm having no issues.

Why does the weather icon say 73 degrees? Is it Fahrenheit?

An auto-updating weather icon is my most-wanted feature. :(

Mine says 23 degrees. Which is pretty close to the current temp. Hmmm.

As for iPhone 3GS.... looks like an iPhone.

For anyone ordering the iPhone, you can get 35% cashback via Microsoft's Bing.com.

Someone at my other forum ordered the 16GB 3GS for $199. Cashback is $69.65 dropping it to $141.29

It used to be Live cashback before the namechange, maybe you've used it before.

$199 - $69.65 cashback
$299 - $104.65 cashback

There's also a huge thread on slickdeals about it for more info. I don't have a link, sorry.

Do you have iTunes 8.2 or higher?

I fukken luv u dullow.

32gb pre-ordered.

probably should've waited to see how much of a plan discount I get from my school, but whatever, I'll just ummmm...go into debt for 3 years!

The finish on the back looks different from the old 3G somehow. I'm hoping that new coating is the reason.

I'm afraid it's just the lighting they used. that oleophobic coating is only for the display (as stated in Apple's tech specs).

the most interesting bit about the whole matte case leak was that they actually had the correct FCC ID numbers compared with these new ones. they were real. but Apple changed their mind (or something else happened) at the last minute and went back to the glossy design.

seems odd for Apple not to have a design change this year. I guess it'll be next year's model.

Does anyone really recommend AppleCare for the iPhone? Everyone I know with iPhone problems seems to be able to switch theirs out pretty easily without it.

Everyone's still within their 1st year warranty. If someone keeps the phone outside that 1st year and it breaks again, THEN they'll be screwed.

They probably felt the internal upgrades were enough to hold the line for another year, and saved the new body for when they really need it. Not a deal breaker anyway.

The lighting in those pics really makes the plastic look great, though.

Did you get any email to confirm the discount? The whole process is pretty vague and unintuitive, and I haven't heard shit from MS/Cashback. :'(

Any got recommendations for a fairly compact, but not earbud design for stereo bluetooth headsets? Even though I don't want earbuds, I wouldn't mind something like these where they do wrap around the ear a bit. So anything like this would be perfect:

Its ridiculous how there isnt a SINGLE physical differentiating feature on the 3GS as opposed to the 3G. Imagine how annoying it will be buying them second hand, etc, if you cant even tell the difference from the outside. How can you be sure its a 3GS, as opposed to a regular 3G? It would be so easy to get screwed. Even just branding it from the back (adding 3GS to 'iPhone') would have been enough, so one could identify it from the outside.

I imagine all the 3GS exclusive software can be installed on the regular 3G phones in the future with some hacks, so that wouldnt be confirmation enough.

This will also make troubleshooting and support for many a pain in the ass, as the units are not easily identified by the user, especially since theyre being sold concurrently. WTF Apple.

This!

Ask them to take a video of something and send it to you, or take a picture!

Can't hack in smooth video unless you're on 3GS hardware.

You're not honestly suggesting this is actually a reasonable way to identify what frikkin model an iPhone is, do you?

All they had to do was have 'iPhone 3GS' on the back, or even 3GS in super tiny print. Why do they suddenly not want people to differentiate the two? I mean, they changed the look significant last time didn't they?

Well they changed it last time because the back was fucking up reception. Maybe they don't plan on changing the design? We'll find out next year.

I see your point and it's very valid for second hand purchases but I don't think Apple cares too much about whether or not they're making it harder for you to buy or sell your iPhones on ebay. In fact, considering all the jailbreaking that goes on, they're probably very pleased with themselves.

Either way, a new design would have rocked, like this:

::drools::

Looking back I'm happy that the rumors of silver->black were false.

Only an issue for the 16GB, to be fair.

My biggest gripe with this design is that the home button would get pressed a lot by accident while it was in your pocket.

The current home button is great because it's recessed into the device.

I love/hate the vibrate toggle on the iPhone as well. When I'm idle I'll almost always be flipping my phone around in my hand or constantly flicking this toggle on/off.

Well, what identifies a MacBook from the previous versions MacBook? Ok, bad example, as they've been recently upgraded, but really when models have only internal upgrades, what differentiates the models of their laptop line?

Ya, but it's easily identifiable things that you can do a screen cap of your computer hardware where you don't do that with a phone.

I'm pissed that the new phones aren't redesigned because that means there will not be new cases. I really need a new case for my 3G and I was holding out for all the old cases to go on sale for 75% off, but that isn't happening now.

I was going to be witty and show a screenshot of my iPhone "About" page, but while it does list a model number, you'd actually have to look up the number to find out what it REALLY was.

But it can be done.

Has anyone found an example video taken from the iPhone 3GS? I saw a clip on YouTube stating to be but it wasn't from a reputable source.

Digital Compass or not, simple - it's a hardware thing can't hack that in.

Its still ridiculous you have to turn on the device, and use a damn app to find out whether its a 3G or 3GS.

EDIT: And good attempt with the macbook analogy, but unfortunately theres significant differences between these situations.

I'm trying to update my contacts info and I noticed that when you input multiple addresses or e-mails, it lists them in order that they were input. Is there a way to sort this differently? Like I knew someone's work address but now just put their home address in and want to now have the home address show up first and the work address second. Any way to fix this?

I think I like black a bit better, after all I went for the black DS Lite back in the days... but the black iPhones are really really common while I've never seen a white one in anyone's hands :/

Still only an issue with 16GB units, and who wants one of those? 32GB 4 Lyfe, yo.

Classic iPods looks amazing in white.

iPhones look girly in white. =p

A guy at work has a white one, and it does look very girly teen scene when he's using it. I almost got a white for the I AM SPECIAL factor, but am so glad I didn't.
