This question might be redundant because I have no idea how this was handled in the past, but if you buy a new iPod Touch after 3.0 releases will it come with the 3.0 firmware or do you still have to buy it separately?

If you buy a new iPod Touch after a firmware update it's included in the price.

Anyone who purchased one before the new firmware has to pay $$$ which is a ton of shit and an easy way for them to fuck over their customers.

After tomorrow I'll be 20$ in the hole. :\

Before everyone goes after me for whining about paying for a software update, just remember that only 1/4 of their consumer base has to pay for this crap, which is completely unnecessary (New iTouch + New iPhone + old iPhone customers all get it for free?? WHY!?)
 
Seems like the UPS Hold people are freaking out over is just a customs thing.

Also, some people who ordered from AT&T for home delivery are just now getting tracking numbers, with expected delivery on the 19th. Makes me feel a little better.

quick question, i have my canadian phone in the states while I am living here for a little while, so now that it looks like I can finally unlock it what carrier would you guys suggest I use. I'm going to go get a new sim card on friday.
 
I hate myself for staying up till 3AM to only maybe get a firmware update.

Where has my life gone? Is this what I've become?!

You have two choices..

AT&T or T-Mobile

Both are horribly shitty.

In the US the CDMA carriers dominate in coverage especially on the 3G front.

AT&T will be more expensive but have more coverage. T-Mobile will be cheaper but wont have as much coverage. Up to you!

AT&T then.

They dominate in Hawaii from their coverage maps. Pretty good actually. Its funny how they dominate in places like Hawaii but places like Nebraska or even Illinois can be barren.

But if that's the Asia site saying the 18th...doesn't that mean that they're planning to roll out the update around noon or something like that PST, which would equate to the 18th over there?

They'd never release a major update at midnight... it'll happen early morning or afternoon so that in case there's a problem there'll be people there to pull the update.

It's not uncommon for companies to keep staff after hours - yes, even this late - for Big Fucking Deals like this.

The download is available here. (Warning: Direct link to the IPSW restore image)

Some notes:
• To install this, you'll have to restore your iPhone to the downloaded firmware.
• The build number is the same a the Golden Master, which is to be expected. Likewise, the feature set should be the same.
• This will not work on iPod Touches, so don't bother trying
• The update will probably propagate through iTunes before too long

You can refresh all you want but that won't make the 3.0 update for your iPhone appear any faster. In fact, you might want to give your trigger finger a rest for a few hours -- Engadget bud, Richard Lai, noted in a tweet that Apple's Singapore site says that the iPhone OS 3.0 update will release on the 18th while Apple India says the 17th, the date announced by Apple -- the difference presumably accounting for the 2.5-hour timezone offset between the two countries. That would peg an OS 3.0 release anytime between 1700 and 1930 in London or between noon and 2:30pm in New York. But don't let a little knowledge ruin your obsessive behavior, where's the fun in that?

Update: The theory is supported by reports that carrier 3 in Hong Kong sent a network-wide SMS notifying iPhone owners that OS 3.0 will be available on June 18th, 01:00 local time. That's 1pm on the 17th in New York, 6pm in London, and 1900 in central Europe.

My package is weird.

It got a hold request before arriving in Louisville. (2:03AM)

Then it arrived in Louisville. (2:06AM)

Then it showed up as "being held" (because of the prior request). (4:03AM)

And then it got ANOTHER hold request. (5:35AM)

I wish it would leave Louisville and get down here to Tallahassee :( (NOW)

Relax dude, it's not going to be delivered until Friday, Apple had UPS put a hold on all shipments until Friday.

Oh I wasn't freaking out. I was just amused that Apple really must be on UPS' ass about this thing considering my package got TWO hold orders in the span of three and a half hours. Can you imagine how fucked they would be if they screwed this delivery up.

Hey what's up with the TomTom thing? Has there been any news about that since the conference, like as in a release date and maybe some more about that dock they showed with it? I'm looking for a good car dock for landscape mode, recharge and audio out and that one looked like it might be exactly what I want. Although I'd prefer to mount it on the dash instead of the window.

I read somewhere that the dock is going to have a built-in FM transmitter for audio output. It basically sealed the deal against me getting it. I was really looking forward to that whole contraption but there's no way in hell I'm listening to my audio over the air. The damn thing plugs into the dock, you figure they could have at least included a line-out audio function.

I'm finding conflicting info that says there IS a line-out function. Wish I could get a straight answer.

I may still get the turn-by-turn software (pending a price announcement), but I'll be mounting it in my own car-holder so I can continue to pump sweet, non-amplified audio out of my dock and let my car's stereo system handle the rest.

As for mounting on the dash, it looks like that's possible from this promo shot:

Cool, I didn't hear anything about an FM transmitter so I hope it has both. Take a look at the picture: http://iphone.tomtom.com/

I guess the wire coming out goes to the transmitter/charger but there's another jack there that could be line out.

I have enjoyed having the GM 3.0 firmware for the past week or so. It's been rather nice to not sit here in anticipation of the firmware!
