I am not a fan of the shake to shuffle implementation. I just went out for a walk, listening to my iphone. I figured I Can take the phone out of my pocket and shake it and then it would shuffle.

NOPE

You still have to unlock the damned thing and then shuffle. That defeats the purpose of a quick shuffle.

But if you don't have to unlock it...then just the motions from jogging would activate quick shuffle...

No!!! So close... I noticed an option now to turn off Load Remote Images in mail. Which I quickly did. However, when viewing mail I don't see any way to manually load the images then if I want to:( Am I missing something or is this an all or nothing proposition?

Just tried it and seems like you're right, that's kinda stupid.

does 3.0 sync songs (manually) faster? I never understood why it was slower and sluggish compared to a regular iPod.. flash is supposed to be faster isn't it?

Seriously WTF is this shit, been trying to activate my phone for the past 5 hours now. All my friends are having the same issue.

Welcome to last year! Now imaging people in Apple stores the world over having to stand in line because the activation servers were being pounded to shit and you couldn't walk out of the Apple store without activating.

All the money apple has and they can't buy enough servers to handle loads like this. Obviously they didn't learn the lesson from last year.

so I got a little bit of good news tonight.

The other day I had "reserved" a 3Gs via the apple site to pick up at my local apple store. I had asked in here if that meant they were going to hold it for me and most said "No" or "doubt it." Anyway, tonight I went into my local apple store to ask and she did confirm that if I reserved it via the website they would have one waiting for me. That I could come pick it up anytime on Friday (I would still have to wait on any lines they would have) and they will activate it for me at the store. She did say if I fail to come on Friday, it goes back on the shelf and will be sold to someone else.

So at least now I know I will not have to get up and get there early on Friday.

Why even have it if there isn't any real advantage to the feature? As it is, you are actually doing more than just having the iphone in shuffle mode and unlocking it and clicking 'next'.

I would guess the only time it would be useful is if you are at your desk, with it linked via a sync/charge cable, listening to music. In that situation it wouldn't ever lock.

The reason I ws disappointed was I read this write up about it that was obviously wrong:

This feature is pretty self-explanatory, but is really great - especially for working out. Imagine you're running or working out in the gym, and you're iPhone's iPod is in shuffle mode. Some mellow, non-workout-appropriate Coldplay song comes on. You have to get your iPhone out of your pocket and press next with your sweaty finger.

With this update, you can keep your iPhone in your pocket (or strapped to your arm if you have an iPhone arm band) and just give it a quick jiggle.

If you are in a specific album or playlist, it shuffles within that album or playlist. If not, it just picks a random song out of your whole library.

So I guess since Apple and ATT are shipping iPhone 3GS to homes and such, Apple is going back to Activating via iTunes? I remember when the 3G came out you HAD to buy at an Apple Store or iTunes since you couldn't activate at home any longer.

Q: If I have a 3G now and I purchase a 3GS without activating at the store, I put my 3G phone SIM card in the 3GS it should just work without a hitch right?

Normally I'd say yes, it should work without a hitch, but now that there are reports that iPhones using 'pay as you go' plans aren't working on 3.0, there's no telling what protections they might have added until you try it out. Your significant other is getting a 3GS to trade with you right? At worst you'll only get to play with :p (or wait for an unlock). Please post what happens here, hope you don't mind being my guinea pig before i take the plunge myself.

I activated my iPhone 3G just fine at home. I ordered mine over the phone with Rogers in August 08.

I'm in the process of upgrading to 3.0 now. Took only 7 mins to download the update =)

3G S will most likely come with a new SIM, and you need to activate it at home though iTunes.

Yeah I understand that. What do you think will happen if I take that new SIM card out, and replace it with my (already activated) SIM card from my current 3G?

well update went smoothly with no bricking.

anyway is there a way to force on MMS at the ATT site as some have speculated? or will we have to wait for att to flip the switch

Actually, worst case you get there at 6pm and the store closes at 9pm and the line is > 3 hours and they cut off the line. You'd have to argue that you have a reservation to keep it, I imagine.

I imagine that most retail stores would cap the line at some time and help anyone who was in the line before it was capped even after "closing".

Any iPhone 3G (with 3.0)
I'm just saying, how many discounts do you expect? The iPhone 3g was over $700 but u got it for $299 thanks to the subsidy. To turn around 1 year later and say you want another $700 phone for $299 is well.....

Exactly why he could be screwed if he arrived after they cut off the line, even if he had a preorder.

Well, fuck Apple then. I'm tired of their bullshit.
I'm fine with financial viability, etc., but ugh.

Their business decisions as of late are shittastic.

it's an odd thing to withhold, but this kind of thing happens with every new tech launch.

Ok I haven't been able to find the answer to this...then again, maybe I'm just choosing not to accept the truth...

Is the AT&T upgrade fee removal announced today for ALL AT&T customers whose contract ends in July, August or September (as long as they have the $99 minimum monthly) or ONLY for existing iPhone customers?

I really don't want to wait the extra few months for my contract to end. =(

Yeah, true, but at the same time Apple has revolutionized the mobile phone interface.
I don't expect things to be "given to me", but at the same Apple themselves have said
that they developed a platform that can be continuously updated, etc.

Also I pay an obscene monthly rate, so naturally I think that I should be "given some stuff".
Even if you don't agree with that point, there's NO reason this feature can't be made available to other parties. I'd even pay for it, but Apple doesn't even offer that.

Nope. AT&T is stunting the iPhone's growth.
I'm sure that translated to some big money for Apple which will turn into more creativity in the future, but seems counter-productive. Then again, pacing, etc.

gotcha, I midread how you phrased that, we were saying the same thing

installed, all looks pretty cool.

an incoming mms alert though only shows the contact's phone number, not their actual contact name, so not only can you not see who its from straight away, it goes in a different message 'thread' to their text messages. \

disappointing, as even SwirlyMMS managed to do this. hopefully fixed in an update... :(

but… your original question was about showing battery percentages in the menu bar. how is that a business problem?

is the bing cashback still going? I've been trying to find a deal forever and I can't seem to find any for an iphone. I go to bing.com, click the shopping link, type in att wireless, iphone, att wireless iphone, etc and nothing comes up with an iphone. only little bullshit accessories.

halp

EDIT: figured it out. does anyone know how cancellation works? I don't want to get on AT&T again. Is it a just 225 or whatever or do I have to pay the difference of the unsubsidized fee too?

LCfiner said:

Well the business problem would be limiting features to newer hardware, when most of the updates are purely software upgrades, thus strong arming people into paying for the new phone instead of offering the new software as a payable upgrade. I'd pay $50 for the battery percentage, MMS, etc.

Then there's the whole AT&T tethering fiasco, cock-blocking 3G owners when they wanted to buy the 3Gs, etc. (I know they retracted it, but these are all poor decisions). The main revolution the iPhone has made, beyond the magnificent UI is the software, e.g.: the App Store.

So they're squeezing the lemon at both ends.

Looks good to me. Click that. It's as shitty and un-user friendly process as can be, though.

I did the bing cashback order and I'm almost certain it's not going to go through :(

What makes you think its not gonna go through?

It wasn't adblock. I was going to bing shopping instead of clicking the advertised site.

Well for me I am not really that worried. I get out of work at 6. I can be at my local mall by 615, and if they say no, then oh well... I can wait until they come back into stock or something...

Another thing I asked is if they are going to activate it there at the store, and she said yes. So I wonder if home iTunes activation will work.

Contract ending != upgrade eligibility.

Unlike what I recall of Verizon, you're upgrade eligible sooner than 2 years if you're a high roller. If you're a big spender like Phoenix, you probably become upgrade eligible every 12 months. If you're a penny pincher like me, you're waiting 18-24 months.

They have a little tool to determine your date. Just try to upgrade on AT&T's web site and they'll tell you what you qualify for.

This statement looks like it contradicts myself. My understanding is that all retail sales have to be activated on site, whereas all shipped purchases activate over iTunes like the original EDGE (and recent online 3G sales)

AT&T's Bing terms of service (on their site) says that *upgrades* are not eligible for Bing cashback. I'm an upgrade, so technically I'm not eligible, although others have posted screens of approved funds (I have not received it though)
