I assumed the Ipod stores and plays songs in mp3 format based on all the reviews I've read. I know it also supports AAC for smaller file sizes. A guy I work with told me that when you transfer songs that are originally in mp3 it actually converts them to AAC to store on your ipod? Is this true or does the ipod store and play the file in their native mp3 format?

I'm pretty sure iTunes converts the MP3 --to--> AAC.
It's done on the fly and is unnoticeable though. The only drawback is transfering mp3 from one computer to another is a pain (?).

Actually, it also supports some other audio formats as well, according to the Apple website: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF, Audible.

In general, you do NOT want to transcode stuff between lossy formats. If you have the source CD and want to re-rip to AAC instead of MP3 because of personal preference, that's a different story.

Yup I knew that...I was just confused cause this buddy at work told me tranferring mp3's to the Ipod always converted them to another format...I told him he was wrong.

Manic Street Preachers related I think. From "the love of richard nixon" promo photos and video

Before the last firmware update killed my iPod (very crap indeed), I was reading that WMV could be supported in future firmware, or by hacking the firmware.

I rarely convert Mp3 to AAC, but that's what CDs goto by default.
