Is 16:9 non-progressive worth the loss in horizontal detail?

This is in reference to Jak 3. I played Jak 2 through twice, one using regular 4:3 and once using the anamorphic squeeze on my TV and using 16:9, however, my television is not a progressive TV, so I was using it without progressive.

I'm assuming it keeps the same vertical frame, but adds extra information to the sides. Therefore, you're keeping the same resolution detail in the vertical realm, but since you have the same amount of horizontal pixels and are putting more into view then you are actually losing more horizontal detail and possibly increasing aliasing in vertical lines doing the anamorphic squeeze trick.

Am I thinking of this correctly, I'm trying to decide which mode to play Jak 3 in. Am I being too anal retentive (no jokes, you know what I mean)?!

I wouldn't call it "loss of detail", my only caveat with anamorphic squeeze mode is losing "screen space", it's like playing on a smaller TV but with a crisper picture... It's not a big deal if your TV is "big enough" to begin with, and it's less of an issue in slow paced games IMO than say racers for example... I feel more sense of speed in F-Zero GX in fullscreen mode.

I don't know THAT much about the technical details of your question, but I'm pretty sure that I see LESS aliasing when using anamorphic squeeze on games that support a 16:9 mode, and I heard other people say the same as well.

I'd say go with 16:9 if you don't mind the smaller "screen space", it always makes games look better IMO.
