is joining a gym worth it?

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
How is deadlifting 500 lbs gonna help me doing the human flag, handstand pushups and pistol squatting up stairs?

HIIT is for cardio.

No one's ever said "Do you even pistol squat bro".

'Nuff said.

Absolute garbage post. If you want to build real muscle you'll need to lift weights, and unless you have the space for it in your house you'll need a gym.

If all you want to do is cardio and look like JD from Scrubs with his shirt off, you're right, a gym is a waste of money.

Misinformed people like you think calisthenics is doing normal push-ups, air squats, etc. but those are just for beginners. Try one handed chin-ups, one handed push-ups, pistol squats, etc.

Think about it. Doing chin-ups with a single arm is like doing 170+ lbs curls, only harder because of the wider range of motion and you have to use more stabilizing muscles.

For me it's not worth it. I could have made the changes I made doing other things and the people there are the worst kind of people. Just last night I saw some roided out guy with a "u mad bro?" tank top.

I like how you know when a guy is on PEDs. I guess we don't need drug tests anymore, just you. Also how you can so easily know and judge the character of people.

I'd say it's very much worth it!

Joining a gym changed my life. I wasn't even supposed to go at first. I had a lot of prejudice towards gyms and weightlifting in general but due to some turn of events, I ended up registered at a gym.

What really made me a convert was that I had the chance of being assigned a very professional trainer. The guy was the complete opposite of the stereotypical beef cake. He was a skinny man in his 40's who spent most of his time reading the sports column in the paper. However, he was very knowledgeable and a great coach.

I've been to various gyms on and off ever since but those first months of training gave me the fitness bug and I don't think I would be so much into the idea if I wasn't introduced to it so well.

So, if you want to register to a gym, find one where they have good trainers on staff. A trainer should be assigned to you to build a program and the trainer should follow up with you at regular intervals (ex: every 2 weeks).

A gym should have a trial period so if you're not happy with the service, you can quit.

Other things to look for in a gym membership: access to a pool (olympic size if possible), courts (for badminton, squash, etc.) so you can bring friends for matches.

One last advantage of a gym membership is that it will enlarge your network.

My wife and I joined a gym this weekend and it has been a great experience. I would exercise myself but you really do get in a different mindset at the gym. It also helps that it is a 24/7 place and 40$ for both of us on no contract.
First leg day is rough!

If he was a trainer a lot of trainers say and do dumb shit. I'm in the best shape of my life and never used a trainer.

Fitgaf bros for lyfe <3

In all seriousness, it sounds like you're finding any excuse you can not to go to a gym.

If I am giving up money I wanna be satisfied with what I'm getting

That place was so small and crowded and uncomfortable and to think I am paying for it fuck that

U actually had to sign in and wait your turn to use machines

And if it were a better gym like YMCA the monthly rate would just be ridiculous

What gym do you not have to swipe a card or sign in?

As for "waiting your turn" you ask to work in. Don't be a creepy guy standing by the equipment just waiting.

To be honest, I wouldn't join a gym where you have to "work in". That's just saying the gym is overcrowded and you're just waiting time waiting to work in instead of just exercising.

I always did my training outside or at home. Trained every day with lots of pushups and sit-ups was always kind of chubby with muscles. Lost my motivation though and currently getting real fat.

Wonder if I should pay for gym anyway... maybe my motivation will magically appear again.

My advice is to go to gym with a friend so you can push each other.

I'll admit I tend to the be the "creepy guy standing by the equipment just waiting" when it comes to the squat rack. Trying to work in on a squat rack is much more annoying then most any other piece of equipment in the place.

Looks like you had already made your mind up before starting this thread.

So to answer your question: No. For you it's definitely not worth it.

Should you join a gym? Will you incorporate it into your life. Make it a habit? If yes, then absolutely. Who doesn't want to be healthy and strong?

If you are so self righteous that sharing a piece of equipment is a burden to you then please, don't bother joining a gym. I sure as hell wouldn't want you at mine.

Eh, you do what you can. I've worked in squats with other squats, OHP and deads.

When my wife and I squat its a constant deload, reload.

It's one thing when you're doing it with your partner, but for me all that time it takes to constantly deload and reload is more than just waiting for the person to finish up their sets.

(plus I compulsively wipe down the bars and benches)

Look at the gym these guys put up with. Some of the excuses made are horrible.

If you don't have the motivation to go, don't go.

Thats great.

Also, agree on the excuses part; the cliche "time, energy, money" really gets old.

Also, I have a theory why people don't want to get into fitness. Because it is one of the few things you have to continually put effort into. There is NO way to get instant gratification, as opposed to say, buying a new car.

You drive it on the streets, and feel like a boss right away.

Exercising? You need to grind. No way around it

Lol same here, I usually just wait so I can get the rack by myself. Guess I'll try working in more since I rarely do that unless someone asks first.
