is joining a gym worth it?

Thats great.

Also, agree on the excuses part; the cliche "time, energy, money" really gets old.

Also, I have a theory why people don't want to get into fitness. Because it is one of the few things you have to continually put effort into. There is NO way to get instant gratification, as opposed to say, buying a new car.

You drive it on the streets, and feel like a boss right away.

Exercising? You need to grind. No way around it

I thought this was about the merits of a gym not the merits of exercise.

Gyms definitely aren't worth it. Most of the claims and attacks by gym rats are just supposed to intimidate you into believing theirs is the only way to be healthy and happy.

But that simply isn't true. As globalization has allowed ideas to travel more broadly, lots of incredible and effective methods from around the world have been found to be just as effective in helping people be healthy. Luckily, I've spent years collecting them in to a healthy, natural herbal supplement that supports the immune system and encourages muscle growth. With Opiate's brand multivitamin™ -- derived mostly from natural herbs I found in ancient China and Egypt -- your days of huffing and puffing in a gym are over. Take the supplement those gym snobs don't want you to know about, and which has scientists baffled!

How is deadlifting 500 lbs gonna help me doing the human flag, handstand pushups and pistol squatting up stairs?

HIIT is for cardio.

lolwat. How is doing a handstand push-up going to help you move heavy things without fucking up your back? How is pistol squatting up the stairs going to improve your bone density? Unless you're a gymnast or hoping to join a circus, what the hell is the benefit of a human flag?

I actually bought a set of gymnastics rings recently. I mostly use them for pull-ups because that's the only way they don't hurt my shoulders, but I'm also practising things like L-sits and the like because they're fun. Bodyweight and free-weight training both have their positives and negatives, but the most effective strength development tool currently in existence is the barbell. The idea that it's somehow inferior because it's a manufactured device or because there are powerlifters who can't do single legged squat backflips into handstand pushups is unfounded gibberish.

Honestly OP it sounds like you were a little intimidated by the gym environment. Might I suggest eating some concrete?

bro. we play diablo 3 together. I made a sick sale yesterday. you can take my advice. going to a gym works wonders. just going, you don't even have to lift. you can receive gains by osmosis. just tap a swole bro on the shoulder, bam, SHOULDERS. i'm not even kidding. that's how I got strong as fuck for my body weight. I'd post a picture, but gaf can't handle me right now.

in other words, take Opiate's multi, and PM me for exact tips on how to receive gains by osmosis.

They're worth it if you're the type of person (like me) who will find an excuse not to work out at home.

Pretty much this.. and there's a lot you can work with at the gym.
I've been going since February, and... well, here's my before and after.

I know the pictures aren't proportionate with the frames, but I did it with a cheap android app...

So I've been working with a personal trainer at a gym for about a month and a half now and I'm finding it to be really useful. My chest muscles are particularly weak so it's neat to have someone to push me towards a few extra presses and pushups than I would normally consider.

I do want to begin working on my core, but my exercise schedule is broken down into bicep/tricep, shoulders, back, chest, with a day or two of cardio in the week.

Then either tell your trainer you want to do abs, or add them in yourself. Trainers only have a limited amount of time to help you. Do abs on your own- p90x ab ripper x is fantastic.

Anyways I think you should str train first, but whatever gets you in the gym is a good thing :)

It is not a bad idea, but i think a better investment for you would be to get a good quality stationary bike and some weights. Because the biggest problem most people tend to face when joining a gym is during the cold months of the year, that is also when the gyms are most empty.

Everyone joins a gym during the summer because everyone needs to cut a few kg's off to look better, but once it gets cold people tend to slack more.

That, and well people tend not see immediate results, so they quit because they get demoralized.

With a bike at home and some weights you can make your own program that suits you the best, while still enjoy your entertainment, regardless of the time of the year or how far the gym is away from you.

You do not need a guide on how to ride a bike (especially a stationary one!) nor do you need much of a guide to lift weights, its not rocket science, there are just a few good tips in general, keeping a good posture etc.

I think going to the gym is completely worth it if you go. The comraderie of sweating towards your goals and having the ability to ask someone a question or for a spot if need be really helps. However, fuckarounditis can kick in at the gym as much as at home. I tried doing Insanity and body weight stuff at home and the boredom killed me in a couple months.

All that's missing is "Gym trainers hate him" and random yellow highlighting.

This.

For the money your spending at the gym, you could be paying down a nice home gym setup, but that is only if you're disciplined enough to use what you buy.

Also, the other part of the equation is managing what you eat. After you're spending time and money on the gym I find it much easier to convince myself not undermine my work by eating the wrong things.

So they Opiate's AI was upgraded and is not capable of humor?

That's not an upgrade, business as usual beep boop

Opiate leveraging social impact for sales beep boop boop

So what did you decide in the end, OP?

Join a gym and do something constructive with your time, or sit home and masturbate all day?

i bought a magnetic stationary bike and i already have free weights at home

i will be hitting these 5 days a week at a monthly charge of $0

i can continue to masturbate too which is one of my favorite hobbies and i don't have to wait to come home to do it either

no travelling to the gym, no need to change in a locker room upon entering/exiting, no ron

i tried the opiates stuff before and i can tell you first hand that its a scam, its basically a sugar pill it makes you uppity for an hour or two and then you have to take another one.. and before you know it you are all out and have to order again

Pull-up bar is definitely a good start.

I got one of those last summer and was able to make some good improvements in conjunction with other body weight exercises (air squats, wall presses, push-ups, planks).

You'll definitely hit a limit, though, and barbell training will be the next logical step. I'd definitely recommend giving the gym another consideration when you reach that point.

You must be lying. I have seen the commercial. The fatty in the ads went from potbelly to six pack in just 3 months, man! 3 MONTHS!

i am not trying to get big

i guess if i wanted to pursue serious body building then a gym would be more suitable

for my needs what i got is more than sufficient

yeah well the pills came with this little pamphlet of a few eating guidelines and recommended exercises and so the sugar must have helped to supplement that, intentional or not its quite genius this opiates method

get people high on a little sugar and tell them to eat right and exercise

Different strokes, I have a squat rack, 500lbs of olympic weights, bench, lat pull down machine, dumbells from 5-75 lbs, olympic bars, curl bars, etc and I'd still rather go to the gym every day. Rarely ever work out at home.

Lacks the power of instantaneous movement
I use 150lb dbs and I'm 5'10 and weighed 183lbs this morning. Is this too big for your standards? Twenty pound dbs are almost useless which you will soon find out. Good luck though.
