is joining a gym worth it?

I use 150lb dbs and I'm 5'10 and weighed 183lbs this morning. Is this too big for your standards? Twenty pound dbs are almost useless which you will soon find out. Good luck though.

Seriously. Sure those are useful for a few months, after that they just become cardio.

Well. He lost weight, which is cool. You don't need a gym or any form of exercise to lose weight.

Well, I've been gaining little strength.
When i started Used to bench with 4lbs dumbbells (Used to be extremely weak :( ) but now i can do 44lbs :p

Also, I just finished my first Giant Set and i feel very satisfied :p

any form of continued movement could be considered cardio

push ups and pull ups get your heart pounding

they still put strain on your muscles

Now now guys, he could be packing on lean mass and toning muscles with those 20lb purses.

Wait. Purses is an insult to women because most women lift more than that.

20lb rattles.

In a row? Seriously, if you listened people who have the proper knowledge you would avoid these next few months of wasted time.

you are saying you can get to 100 reps with ease using 20 lb dumbbells?

i personally don't care much about serious strength or anything i just want my arms to look nice, which i think they do with the 20 lb dumbbells, push ups and pull ups but i am just asking lol

Because the "toned" look you're shooting for is only larger muscles with lower body fat and doing 40 reps at low weight won't achieve that.

i guess i have good genetics then? i really don't think i do but again the combination of push ups pull ups and dumbbell curls have done pretty good for me

Yeah? Considering triceps make up the majority of your arms I don't think we have the same definition of nice looking arms but hey, different strokes if you're happy.

my triceps actually are quite full if that makes any sense

So why exactly did you start this thread? All you want is toned biceps which you admit you have achieved with pull ups, push ups, and curls. Why would you ever consider joining a gym?

I keep imagining bangladesh as the guy in his avatar.

Yeah, 40 reps of bicep curls is madness. Not an effective way to train no matter what your goals are, at any weight. All you're doing at that point is raising your "bicep curl endurance".

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face

Why would you want to do 100 reps of such low weight? What's your goal? I think you suffer from I-don't-know-why-I'm-doing-this-itis. I had the same problem for years until I joined a gym, and I had dumbbells at home that went up to 65lbs.

this is exactly why

why pay a monthly fee to go and be fit instead of getting it done at home?

Because some people would like to be a little stronger than lifting 20lb dbs in case they may happen to have to fend off 85 year old grandmas in a bar fight. There's your answer.

"Fit" isn't the best you can be. It isn't the best version of yourself. Its what you get from cutting soda from your diet and doing jumping jacks.

Those who wish to join a gym or spend hundreds on a home gym aren't looking to get "fit" - they are looking to trade in their Clark Kent for Superman. They are looking to be the best they can be mentally, emotionally, physically. It takes knowledge, an iron will and hard work to get where some folks like Cooter are.

The best version of yourself isn't for everyone. If you are happy at just being "fit" - then you shouldn't have made this thread.

so putting on lots of size, makes sense to me

otherwise a waste of money
Lots? I don't think you realize how difficult it is to put on any size. Lots requires years and years of dedication if you go the natural route. Also, size isn't all too important to me and not the reason I belong to a gym. Strength is my main motivation.

Once you have it in yourself that you want to do it, and you are actually going every other day or close... it becomes worth it.

There is an addiction to it, at some point you just WANT to do it. If you don't have that, it's probably is not worth the contract.

Yeah, I'd say 20lbs is ok to start, but in the mean time I'd be combing ebay/craigslist for a good deal on dumb bells that can higher because he will reach a plateau with those pretty fast.

you never heard of the rippetoe conspiracy

he is why gyms make money

Actually most gyms make money from being completely opposed to Rippetoe's philosophy. Gyms want people to come in and use lots of machines, and also rarely come in after their first month but pay for an entire year.

Eat lots of delicious red meat, drink lots of ice cold beer, and spend your leisure time whoopin' ass, and you'll be in the best shape of your life.

You could make 20lb curls work, just try eg GVT or something along those lines. 60-80% of training max is the optimal range for most strength-related adaptations including hypertrophy but that encompasses a huge array of programming types.

I started working out at the gym for the summer. Best decision ever. I feel so much better, healthier and happier. It's definitely worth it because of the results and knowing you have the capability to run that fast for so long, lift that many weights etc. Definitely a confidence booster as well.

only Fernando's ripe melons are good enough for me
I am thinking about joining a gym after believing for so long that they were a waste of money because you can do all of what you need right at home. (keeping a good diet, getting moderate exercise by walking and commuting) And of course, before gyms were even a thing people still managed to be healthy.

But I'm just often bored to death at home all the time, I do nothing all day but sit and browse the internet and jerk off. So maybe getting away from home and going to the gym can be a mental benefit, too. Maybe it can be refreshing. Gyms seem to have become real popular in the last decade but what does NON-GYM Gaf think about gyms?

haha keep telling yourself that. Anyone who is serious about working out, getting in shape, and staying in shape, belongs to a gym. I'm not even gonna bother listing all of the benefits.

i didn't say 20 lb dumbbells are all you need

there are plenty of ways to do anaerobic activities and i just said you don't need a gym to do them
