Is PC the best gaming platform this generation?

PC is only for graphics whores with a framerate obsession, not actually playing games
Wow wow! Easy there, cowboy.
I'm a "dirty graphics whore with a framerate obsession", and I play and finish tons of games every year. And BECAUSE I play shitloads of games, and spend lots of time with them- I want the best possible experience.

Great graphics can never beat great gameplay, but I want both. Which lots of games provides, when played on a top notch PC.
At the same time, piss poor framerates can totally fuck up a otherwise great game, so yeah - let me be a dirty whore and STFU

This is a fair point but he was asking about power consumption... 250w on average is not as good as something maxing out at 230w (and likely taking less than that most of the time)
If you really care about power consumption before anything else, you can pick up a 150W 4060 Ti 16GB and pair it with a 65W AMD CPU.

Edit: Though actually seems the 16 GB model consumes ~165W at stock, so I guess you would have to set a power limit.

Last console I bothered with was the X360 (ok, switch OLED but I consider that a mobile console). If you are remotely tech savvy PC has always been the better platform. The backwards compatibility alone makes it worth it. Nothing like revisiting 22 year old Morrowind with OpenMW on a cheap $350 laptop and then having those save files transfer over to my 11900k / 6900XT rig at 4k so I can play it modded out to ridiculous levels and back.

People on PC don't actually play games, they just count the frames and masturbate.

This generation?
Since the resurgence in the 2008/10 PC has been the best platform.

When you consider emulation is a no brainer.
But now more games are coming to PC from all big companies sony/microsoft that was not the case 12 years ago.

By far and it's not even close, and mind you it has its own set of problems like those really bad ports, specially in 2022 and 2023 when studios couldn't sum 2+2 and really thought people would buy anything with their name stamped on the games lol.

The other one is Nintendo for me, they've just been undefeated with their exclusives, like they're on crack or something, how did they manage to put so much quality with such a frequency? Sure the have their stinkers but they're few and far between imo.

Easily and it's not even close. PC was the best after the PS1/N64/PS2 era and even back then PC was already rivaling it with games like StarCraft, Warcraft 3, Counter Strike, Half Life.

Of course consoles are better, I love playing on low preset upscaled with FSR2 and unstable 60fps on games that are available on PC, and I love especially paying for a very expensive online service in addition to more expensive games compared to Steam.

Yes.

PC first>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everything else a distant 2nd
Glad you're enjoying your purchase. It's sometimes not easy to go from the ease of use of consoles to PCs, but it seems to have worked out for you.

Just a question.
I'm not that techy but can you easily set up and plug your PC too a 65 inch OLED TV and play on the couch?

Yup, just connect an HDMI cable like you would for a gaming console and video and audio will just work.

You'll want a wireless keyboard and mouse and most likely a game controller.

How was a visuals and frame rate?
What do you mean? That depends on the PC and the game. If your PC can run the game fine on the desktop monitor, it'll work just the same on the TV.

No need for allot of new cables, updates, configuration or driver etc. etc., you know what I mean?
Just one extra cable. Press windows key + P, select which screen to display on (monitor or TV) and go! Nothing else is needed.

Some people say that you need a wireless keyboard but instead I just launch the game before sitting on the couch and play with my gamepad.

Not typically. Your TV is basically a monitor if you think about it. Keyboard and mouse on the couch is a drag, imo. You can use big pictue mode in Steam and get around most of that, but you'll want a wireless keyboard and mouse handy in case you need to use Windows.

Forgot to mention: while Steam is open, you can control the mouse with the gamepad and even make a keyboard show up by pressing L3. You can navigate windows, browse the internet or whatever this way, although it's hard to be precise with the mouse unless you reduce the sensibility.

Thanks for the answers. PC gaming is starting to grow on me. If I can save some extra money, I try to build the best PC rig.

I'm a Sony and Nintendo fan, but Sony's bad directions especially when it comes to exclusives turning into multiplatform and not to mention exclusives are very few in this era. And PS woke and twisted DEI infestation, and gaas obsession is turning me off. I did enjoy some PS5 games especially Stellar blade, SH2 remake, GT7, Astrobot, Death stranding 1 and DS2 but that's about it.

I like Nintendo and there exclusives are excellent. I like Mario games since I was a kid. I'm still a fan of Nintendo, but I also hope for some technological progression which I was expecting on Switch 2 since it is considered next gen, but I think the technology on Switch 2 is still limited. Switch 2 could have at least standardize 4k/60 FPS with RTGI since it is a considered a next gen gadget.

I use my PC on a Samsung TV (it's a 144Hz one with VRR and HDR), and it works great. The TV detects the PC and immediately starts in game mode.

I use an Xbox controller for games; I've never had any compatibility issues.

Regarding using the PC outside of gaming, I recommend buying a wireless keyboard with a touchpad. Some will tell you to use big picture mode, but I personally like to tweak things first, install mods, and so on, so it's a good idea to buy one anyway.

Only thing holding back PC is that garbage Windows OS. From the naive point of view, it doesn't do anything it hasn't already been doing for 30 years but with all the advancements in hardware it's still a laggy piece of garbage.

MY next PC I'm not even gonna bother and just use Linux OS. I can always just keep my current laptop in the desk for whatever random game that needs Windows OS.

Windows OS with its openness, flexibility and far reaching b/c is like 75% of why PC is a great platform.

That's true by virtue of becoming a monopoly OS decades ago, but it still has a lot of flaws. There is a thread on it. Linux is more open and flexible. Valve wouldn't be able to do the things they have done in Linux with Windows.

There is something essential missing in the OP:

Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for......?

Without the second part the question is meaningless clickbait.

Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for me?
Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for people who like cheap game deals?
Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for Trophy lovers?
Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for ease of use gaming?
Is PC the best gaming plattforn this generation for people who like to have the best experience visually?

You can continue the list without end, but without a target group the question is reduced to clickbait ragepost material, because everybody values soemthing different.

From the OP:

"PC has games from microsoft from sony even some from nintendo all in one system and more to come!, this year we are going to play Hellblade 2, indiana jones, Avowed ,MFS24 and Stalker 2 all in day one! and maybe on Game-Pass?, it is really my prefered platform for many reasons! what about you?"

I don't see what is missing. He states why it is his preferred platform and asks others what they think. He doesn't need to list every possible target group. They can respond and answer for themselves.

I know. I just felt the need to state that based on how the 9 pages of discussion presented themself so far. ;)

Judging by all unreleased games in the next 3 years I wouldn't consider the 30 and 40 series gpus from Nvidia helpful for their value. Next gen maybe but definitely not this gen.

Just a question.

Yep. I run a 9070xt to my LG C1 TV. Setup was minimal- turned on HDR and set Hz to 120.

Nvidia was a bit more- set HDMI to max, bit rate to 10bit etc. It put all HDMI settings to the lowest by default which is odd. Found the picture on AMD better and more vibrant than Nvidia when comparing both. Nvidia also requires two apps to manage the GPU.

Now is a good time to buy. A lot of Nvidia GPUs just went on "sale" back to MSRP, at least in Canada. Even 5090. They are giving away Borderlands 4 on 5070ti or higher GPUs.

PC is getting worse but not as fast as consoles. It has been very clearly the best platform for gaming since the 360/PS3 era, since both consoles shit the bed with HD gaming, and just became inferior PCs.

I'd definitely wait for the next batch at this point...

"Easily" is relative to the user knowledge but it will never be as "ease" as a console.

It's getting more and more games, emulation included, but somehow is getting worse???

Nope, I've been there done that.
Built a powerful HTPC-cased Gaming PC that was plugged in the same as the consoles.
Not in a million years as easy as a console despite PCMR clowns claiming the same for /checks calendar, 15 years now.
You can get better performance and cheaper games with PC gaming but anyone who says there isn't an ease of use/convenience compromise to be made is lying or delusional.
Fanboys gonna fanboy though.

I recently built my first gaming PC after having consoles all my life.

The build was pretty simple (I went small form as I wanted it on my TV) and it did take a few weeks to get used to it with some teething problems but now it's seriously amazing.

I'm playing old games I missed at 4k 120fps, adding mod patches in to improve games and I got Cyberpunk running at over 100fps at 4k....it's insane!
So much choice and options.

I did have a period of feeling weird leaving PS (mainly as I got so many games left in it plus account credit) but honestly I haven't turned it on more than once since I got my PC.

Hooked up to my Samsung QLED easily as well.
