Is PSN really this bad?

I'll never understand why they don't apply the patches to what's already on PSN.

Saying that I don't understand why some games have multiple patches either. I remember when I played Uncharted 2 a few months ago. I had to go through 9 patches/installs. That needs to be fixed.

KICK-ASS was like that too. I installed it, then it prompted for a patch as big as the original game itself. I sad F it and just deleted the game entirely.
It was a gameshared title so I didn't lose too much money at the time.

not to defend this.. but it is a BETA.. so the patch system is quite different, they actually (almost always) just make you download the whole beta again with the changes in effect, instead of patching the changes into the current version of the beta..

it still sucks..

Yeah, but why not just release a smaller patch? It makes no sense to force people to download the entire beta again as a patch.

Hell, if they can't release a smaller patch, replace the beta that's on the store with the most up to date version. Goddamn, what an absolutely idiotic approach to betas. O_o

Yup. I haven't played a PS3 beta before and I'm glad I didn't if they keep forcing you download the entire game as a patch whenever they make changes.

PSN downloads are disgustingly slow. I get 6mb/s download speeds on PC, quick downloads on xbox but on PS3 it takes like an hour to download 2 gigs

It's fucking annoying.

Sounds about right to me. I remember it took me 3 hours to download a 500 meg patch for Gran Turismo 5, and it takes me literally 3 minutes to do the same on Steam.

I've even forgotten I've had downloads on in the background, turned off my PS3, turned it back on and they resume as normal.

Download speeds are solid too. Nothing special but no worse than when I'm downloading albums or w/e off of iTunes.

PSN downloads are horrifically slow most of the time, but nothing compared to how slow the patch servers are. I probably get around 500kB/s on average downloading from the store, but around 100kB/s on average with patches. Downloading the 1GB patch for Spess Mehren was fun at that speed.

No idea why it's all so slow now. A few years ago it always maxed out my connection.

I get the exact same speed on PSN as I do on my PC. Never had any problems with PSN. Works great overall. The fact it can automatically turn off your PS3 after its downloaded your game, should have been enough reason for you to background download anyways. It's a lesson you'll know for next time though :)

If you lose connection it should automatically restart at the same percentage it stopped at.

Pretty certain that if I'm downloading something in Windows from IE and my internet drops i'm fucked too. The storefront is not a download client, if you want that push it to the XMB and download in the background.

This is the OP's problem in not understanding, not Sonys.

The way PSN operates has always pissed me off. I'm pretty much always frustrated whenever I have to download something. Not to mention the frequency of the system updates and how fucking long they take.

I really don't get the hate, is your life that jam packed that you can't wait for a download? Accept the fact that it's slow and stop comparing to other systems.

I don't moan that my car isn't as fast as sports cars, because it's not a sports car. PSN is NOT Live or Steam, it's PSN!

I've never had issues with download speeds on there with BT, always pretty much maxing out my connection speed. Just Cause 2 downloaded in about 40 minutes the other day. That's quick enough for me.

I'm allowed to complain that a service is barely using my connection speed

I don't have this problem with anything else, psn is just pretty damn terrible in regards to downloads

Wired connection here using google DNS servers and my d/l speeds are always really good. Try changing your DNS servers. I think some isp's throttle stuff like psn, hulu and Netflix

So you feel you have the right to COMPLAIN about something you aren't paying for? Awesome! You could be disgruntled or frustrated by it, but you have no right to complain about it.

Just imagining downloading a 10 Gig file on PSN makes me cringe.

I upgraded my PS3 hard disc last weekend; after doing so, I thought I'd download all the full games my PSPlus subscription offers.

It took me a full *two days* to complete the downloads. Total size would have been 50+GB, I think, but I'd have to count to make sure.

but you have no right to complain about it.

I don't have these issues on my 360 or computer or any other device or service.

The downloads are throttled.
They're faster for me than on XBL. Xbox Live gets me about 1.5 MB/s and that's nowehre close to maxing out my connection. DMZ, wired, of course.

Speed depends on a lot of factors so its hard to say if it's PSN, your connection, how your PS3 is connected to your wifi, etc.

But... unfortunately there is an issue with not downloading big files in the background - dropped connections can give trouble in my experience while if you download in the background its normally fine to restart automatically.

Generally anything more than a few seconds to download I chose background download.

But... I do think Sony should have this better sorted out better : either make sure both methods have parity in re-start ability, or provide a small txt warning recommending background for larger files or (my preference) allow you to set a flag so that any files over a certain size automatically get set to download in the background.

Personally my PSN is fast enough to download, although a little slower than my 360 on the same WiFi. If the speed is slow for you I'd check out options for making sure you have your PS3/WiFi talking to each other optimally - no doubt google could provide some suggestions.

I have a shitty connection, but I manage to download at 1MB/s on PS3 and only 0.5MB/s on PC (even with torrents etc). It is more than enough for my standards, lol
I'm downloading Deus Ex right now. Multi5 version, hooray! ;_;
Never had a problem with Store contents, but I always downloaded things in background so I always stopped and restart download without much troubles.

The only thing I hate is not being able to download patches in background.

In this regard, Vita handles PSN in a better way - the OS starts the background download automatically, even with patches, and installing takes less than a minute.
Data transfer speed (between PC/Vita) is slow, but I don't know if it's related to memory card tech or some kind of encryption system.

Says who? you?

Get the fuck out of here. I bought the system, I can complain all I want about its shortcomings

I was in a similar situation as the OP. I did not know storefront downloads weren't resume-able. My connection dropped midway and realized I couldn't continue where I left off. It wasn't too bad though. The filesize of the game was just around 1GB-ish.

However, it's still a pretty bad design. How hard is it for Sony to push downloads automatically to the XMB background downloader client.

Not really. My PS3 is connected via a wired connection, using the same router as every other device in my house, all of which have no download speed problems. I even have all my PS3 ports nicely forwarded to make my NAT nice and open. I've also tried different DNS solutions, including Google, OpenDNS and my ISP's defaults.

There's nothing more I could possibly be doing on my end to make it faster, and yet it still only uses 20% of my connection speed at most. So I'm going to say it's pretty easy to lay the blame on PSN itself in my case.

I'm in Europe and I have had some of these troubles too. For instance, PSN doesn't seem to calculate the space needed before it starts to download, resulting in a crash as soon as your HDD is filled up. Speeds for me are ok, but not optimal. And yes, it slows down to a crawl as long as you play games.

That said, PSN+ is a fantastic deal and I'd recommend it to anyone.

It's just hard not to bitch about my ps3 when I've also got an xbox that has nowhere near the same problems when they're both using the same wireless. I absolutely do not want to start a console war; I'm just saying that when one works better by default, the first thing that comes to mind is NOT: "I must be doing something wrong!"

c'mon Speevy.

PSN downloads are incredibly slow for me at home and at work (where I routinely pull 10-15 megabytes a second from Steam). I assume they're throttling transfers significantly. You get what you pay for?
You get what you pay for but Steam is blazingly fast? :p

Nah, PSN is just that bad.

This is so unnecessary. People like discussing and comparing things, the shush squad doesn't need to show up every time criticism occurs.

Never had a problem since I got PS+, just saying ...

Auto downloads of what I queued up, auto install of downloads and patches. I guess I get what I pay for.

PSN must only be slow in America, because here in Japan I get lightning fast download speeds on the Playstation store. Never understood the complaints but would make sense that it's just worse overall in the States.

In Italy too it's real fast. And considering that our network infrastructure is shit...

However, wired + background downloading makes the trick.

I can't remember what this says exactly, but doesn't the download screen tell you you can pause and resume background downloads from Download Management under network?

background001.jpg

What's the small text here?

I've just given up on PSN, like every time I'm going to watch a Blu-ray, I'm logged out. After I log in I have to update and that takes like hours for some reason.

It's odd... Where the Xbox might be too dependant on internet, PS3 is the exact opposite.

No, that just tells you where you can find your background downloads. That's it.

Does download speed of games and patches actually improve with PS+?

No, but then again .. I queue overnight or go to make a sandwich and it's there. DL speeds are pretty good for me (approx 2-3 MB/s). The only time it's slower is during peek times and when PSN has a store update.

Patches are overnight.

Everyone with very slow download speeds should try to pause the download (and resume it). PSN usually connects you to a different server after you've paused it, which can be seen if you tried something like ProxyVoxy.

Just imagining downloading a 10 Gig file on PSN makes me cringe.

Ratchet is 14 gigs. Took around 20 minutes.

A lot of times if it's just slow dl speed, that can be your router and connection too (had this with Time Warner). There are times when it gets hammered, like any other dl service.

Same thing with updating, hey--if you don't turn your PS3/360 on for months, there's probably an update waiting for you. That's not the network's fault, its yours.

Does download speed of games and patches actually improve with PS+?

Not speed, it just downloads patches, syncs data, etc. Convenience stuff. Honestly, that's not the type of thing you should pay for anyway--speed should be consistent regardless of content pricing. As should online.

I've never had most of these problems through 3 PS3's (dead 60, live Slims).

Also, PS3 has no games.

Well played.

I don't know. The Xbox 360 UI has had at least three to four complete redesign and overhauls this gen while the PS3 has been stuck with the same awful one since launch. Doesn't the Vita also use the same shitty OS and UI?

1)WHAT?! PS3's Ui is great!
2) No it doesn't

Download speed on PSN is so random, 99% of the time though I get crazy slow speed, and every now and then the download speed is just as good as when I download from the PC.

inFamous 2 (15GB) took me around 3-3.5hrs to download. that's ~5GB/hr, this is PC download speed, BUT normally on PSN its 1GB/hr for download speed.

The only times my downloads are slow. Is when the item i am downloading is from way in the past

but anything new usually maxes out my internet connection 3.5MBs
