Is there anything within the gaming sphere you refuse to support on principal?

I may get flack for this, but Tomb Raider.

With how they revealed the Rise of the Tomb Raider (no platforms announced, but assumed would be all of them), followed by the next reveal showcasing it to be MS exclusive and their PR responses afterwards, I can't give them any of my money.

I wouldn't even download their Lara Croft game when it was free on PS+ knowing it might actually give them money or inflate their download numbers.

I used to play every Tomb Raider game, but I'm moving on to Uncharted now. They clearly didn't want my money or any money from PS4 users, so I'm just respecting their wishes.

EA and Ubisoft will probably never see another dollar from me. I've been burned many times by both and I'm done.

I'll never really understand boycotting a company (unless they support murder or something). If they make a good game that you want to play, just play it. Don't buy their bad games.

You're boycotting a game because of a bad assumption that you made, which is actually turning out to be true anyways?

Mobile gaming. Just no. I also rarely support DLC pricing on things like gun skins for five dollars or costumes for five dollars. That shits fucked.

There have been several games that get revealed without even the mention of a console it's coming to. It's a timer exclusive for a bit. That is not the end of the world. We've seen it be done with DLC and other games for years.

I won't buy DLC outside of expansions. I am okay with paying for it in a GOTY edition. I won't buy games that I know to have withheld content to sell as DLC later.

I rarely buy Day 1 and don't pre-order. It is irresponsible consumption, in my view.

If it is pro-Gamergate, it does not have my support. In fact, anything that does not support equality and fair treatment of people loses me.

It's not the assumption, it was how they handled it. How they made it seem like it was exclusive, as opposed to timed exclusive, how they worded things and handled their PR, how MS bought a multiplatform game instead of creating their own to compete with Uncharted. It rubbed me the wrong way, that's not how things should be handled and I swore off Tomb Raiders because of it.

This in particular:
This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

Thanks. But why would I play a game where the sequel is cut off from me? We can really feel the love over here, CD.

And this:
Were the fans considered when making this decision? Are Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix aware of the franchise history with PlayStation and on PC?
Of course. We did not make this decision lightly. Our goal is to build the best game that we possibly can, and our relationship with Microsoft will help us realize our vision for the game.

Why didn’t Microsoft, Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics say upfront it was a timed exclusive? Why all the indirect language?
We certainly didn’t intend to cause any confusion with the announcement. The Microsoft Gamescom stage was a great place to make the initial announcement, but not necessarily to go into details.

Using the word "timed" was too difficult?

And this:
Crystal has been investing in that game and Square has as well, in Tomb Raider as a franchise, and wanting to put it at the highest level, with the big triple-A franchises out there, but that's expensive. For us, as we've been working together on this, it's a nice franchise for us in terms of the genre and how it fits into our first-party portfolio. Do I wish I had an owned IP first-party action adventure game? Absolutely. But I don't right now. This is one that fits well and we had such a good working relationship with them.

...

It really was nothing against any other platform. It's just looking at our portfolio next holiday and saying, this is a great game for us, and we can go really big with it. If we look back on the franchise and this release, it can raise the elevation of what it means in gaming. I'll be happy to be part of that.

...

I want you to ask me, because I want to get this story out there. This whole thing that, like we just somehow found something that Sony fans love and said hey, if we just drop millions of dollars then they can't go play the game, that's not how it played out.

No, Phil, that's exactly what you did. You admitted it. Here. When comparing it to Uncharted:
But yeah, when you think about our portfolio, if it was a sci-fi shooter, I probably wouldn't do that! I've got one of those! Or if it's a Gears competitor, or a Forza competitor, there are things I wouldn't go after. But this is one that clearly fit in our portfolio really well. That's definitely part of the analysis. I want to be a good partner. I wouldn't be a good partner to Crystal and Square if I had a game I thought was directly competitive with this in the timeframe, and I didn't.

I just hated all of the run-around, and lies and misinformation and back-handed apologies and in the end, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix did NOT want my money over MS's, so it is being allocated elsewhere.

Even to their reversed all the policies, on principle i refuse to buy an Xbone, it's become easier since they anounced KI is comming to PC.

I refuse to play Bayonetta and The binding of Isaac for thematic reasons (yet different for each game), despite knowing fully that they're both good series, i just have a rule that if a game resorts to cheap tactics to sell (Oversexualisation for Bayo, shock value and trying to be as offensive as possible for Isaac) they don't deserve my money.

There's not much I oppose out of principle, except spending money in advance, or before knowing what I pay for exactly (although it's more a matter of common sense and good management than principle, IMO).
So I never buy seasons pass (unless they're on sale and all their content released already), and don't preorder (well I did it once because the Insomniac guys on Neogaf were cool, but that wasn't for me).

I'm not really thrilled by the concept of early access either, and have never paid for one yet. I won't close the door though, maybe some may be worth it, but it will depend on how "early" it is. I want my money worth of entertainment.

Microtransactions, whether the game is free or paid;
Advertising in free games (with an exception made for real-life ads like soccer team's shirts or pitchside boards etc where it would be distracting if the ads weren't there);
Pre-ordering, ever.
Day 1 DLC.

EDIT: Looking back I feel like I can happily say I've never paid for a microtrans; I've never bought a game that interrupts me with advertising; I've never pre-ordered a game; and I've never bought a game with Day 1 DLC. Mortal Kombat X was the last game I had to skip due to these principles, but there have been many others.

Microtransactions and cliffhangers leading to DLC are both unsupportable from my perspective. They're part of an industry more interested in wringing more dollars out of a customer than in producing great experiences that attract more customers.

I don't mind legitimate content DLC. New tracks for music games are a staple for me, and Left Behind was a brilliant addition to The Last of Us. I'm leery of season passes and generally don't sign on. Certainly never before I've played the core game extensively. The two I have purchased were clearly spelled out in advance (Drive Club and Witcher 3.)

Xbox live. MS has abused their position with this for 2 generations and still won't give console gamers or power games a path to dedicated servers. MS is also aware of bufferbloat and does nothing pc or console within their software or hardware base to remedy or mitigate the issue. Bufferbloat affects all net users lessening it especially in instances of mainly P2P gaming should be a no brainer.

If I'm paying for matchmaking service or on online infrastructure I think there should be more tangible benefits than a unified friends list.

I've never bought a Season pass, but it's not out of "principal", it's just because they seem like a terrible value to me. If the value proposition were ever there I would probably buy one, but I don't spend money on anything sight unseen.

I usually forego games for a while if said companies practices are not to my liking. So at various times; Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and currently Konami. I was going to buy MGSV used , but a friend told me that the game is incomplete and that you can only see the end of the game if you buy the CE so I'm now waiting till the game is a lot cheaper.

microtransactions

pre-orders

season pass

day 1 dlc

always online in single player "offline" games

pay 2 win in full priced games (the top tier characters in KOF 13 (Karate/Flame Iori) where behind pay wall DLC in a full priced game - fuck that shit)

platform parity clauses

bad PC ports

You can usually still buy season passes after all the content has released.

capped 30fps games on pc. or just bad pc ports in general. f2p games that are pay to win. ive also been trying to stay away from 30fps console games. so far bloodborne has been the only exception.

Items such as skylanders, that Disney one, and Lego dimensions. They all have those extra Booster packs that you might not want right away, but you will later on. My kids want these games but I've had to explain to them that this sort of marketing of a game is just simply for more money.
Same with ambiios, they hold no relatively great purpose. They're memory is really low (may as well be a floppy disk), and it looks like they're just turning into collectable items.

I don't do season passes, I ignore bioware and bethesda because their concept of a game and what I play are opposed.

I will never play a western made MMO again almost off MMOs period if not for Blade and Soul. Won't do mobile because what they can provide and what I want will never align.

I'm with everyone on this season pass stuff. I do everything I can to buy the cheapest version of any game that comes out, 60$ is what a full triple A should cost not 80 for content that hasn't even come out yet...

Marvel Mobile Gaming.
-if you wanna charge me, then don't give me a thousand confusing Pop up windows to try.
-why so many in game currency options? Gold, ISO, crystals, credits. Have an In-game currency and a real money one if you wanna be jerks.
-use better art. You wanna fleece me, and you're based on comics, but you have the most uninspired character portraits imaginable.

Tried a few without paying. The contstant menus and text drov me nuts

I don't buy Nintendo products on principle anymore. It seems to me that every other game company/publisher/developer out there tries to accomodate the consumer (in order to make profit, sure). While Nintendo believes its costumers should accomodate Nintendo for the priviledge of paying for their branded products.

Basically it's because you are forced to buy their proprietary hardware in order to access their games. It's been a long time since their consoles/handhelds had any kind of value other than the single ability to play Nintendo games. The fact is that they cannot compete on services and technology with their competitors, so they 'blackmail' their fans into buying worthless additional hardware they should not have to. Sony and Microsoft can provide infrastracture for a gaming platform, Nintendo can't anymore. Yet here they are asking money for outdated and overpriced hardware that only actually plays certain exclusive games.

Imagine what would happen if EA decided to make a proprietary console that would only run exclusive FIFA, Madden and Battlefield games. Now imagine if every other publisher with more than two-three major franchises followed suit. It doesn't happen because they understand that the industry would implode. This is the only reason Nintendo is allowed to keep doing it. Because due to their history and position they are the only ones who can get away with it.

Well, until they go multiplatform, they aren't getting any of my money again. I have learnt to live without Mario or Metroid and after a few years of withdrawal I realised I don't even need them anymore.

IAP for anything that's not cosmetic. This is mainly a problem on mobile now where f2p games are designed around gating you based on time or in game resources. Just sell me a damn video game that doesn't need to nag me every second to pony up money. Jesus.

I'm aware. I'm just saying, I've never bought one before the content all came out because I don't know if it's going to be worth it, and I've never bought one after all the content came out because the content has never seemed worth it to me. Does that make sense?

Not sure I'd call it a principal thing.. I refuse to buy online only games. If I can't play solo or I *have* to play with other people then I won't buy the game.
I learned this the hard way with Destiny.

pre-orders or even day one, but not based on the principles that spawn whole 20 page threads here. I just find that the games don't work day one. so why pay full price.

.....or they are half as good as the initial reviews state which is also very common.

Pre ordering, Kickstarter, etc. If I pay, I get what I paid for, there's absolutely no reason to do that, no incentive to me, and an unlockable costume is not going to change my mind.

I don't buy season passes cause i refuse to buy content that I have no idea what it is (Maybe I'll buy a season pass once all the dlc is out to get them at a discount but i have yet to do this as normally i don't feel that the dlc is worth money. Witcher 3 will be the first time I'll actually end up buying a season pass for once the 2nd dlc is released) & I don't buy microtransactions for paid games, sometimes i don't even end up buying the game (dead space 3 being an example i can think of off the top of my head)

I'm aware. I'm just saying, I've never bought one before the content all came out because I don't know if it's going to be worth it, and I've never bought one after all the content came out because the content has never seemed worth it to me. Does that make sense?

Ok, got it.

If it is pro-Gamergate, it does not have my support. In fact, anything that does not support equality and fair treatment of people loses me.

I came here to post this.

Also depending on representation I may or may not stop supporting a game/company. As soon as that whole transphobic debacle happened, I stopped consuming anything related to Penny Arcade instantly. Screw those guys.

uPlay, due to the scummy always-online DRM it had. I don't want that to spread, much less succeed, so I've decided against having any uPlay products. Ubisoft in general has little of interest because of this.

I'm just glad Dark Messiah of Might & Magic wasn't uPlay, because I'd totally miss that game.

Micro transactions and pay 2 win. I also don't buy a season pass until the content is already out and I want to play the new content.

I never understood why people buy season passes before the actual dlc came out. You can always buy the season pass later, usually at a discount.

I won't ever buy a Ubisoft or EA game on launch day again. My hype for SW Battlefront is insanely high, but I'll still be waiting a week to see if the game works first.

Preorder Bonus and story dlc. If there is any of this I'm out. Steam sale at a maximum for $5 from now on. I have enough games already. No pressure to buy them day (or year) one.
