Imagine another snarky PS commercial about, "How to play all the best Playstation and Xbox games," then it cuts to someone buying a PS5 and playing Halo and then Spiderman 2 on it.

I'm sure MS wouldn't mind the free advertising

I do think halo could make a very big splash on PlayStation

Going third party with games (after they have been on Xbox/PC for a few months at least) and continuing to release Xbox hardware for the time being (including an updated 2TB Series X with no disc drive as well as an updated controller). Might hear some more about activison blizzard games coming to game pass too. What will be the point of getting an Xbox now? Gamepass I guess, and day 1 MS games. I'm hoping they hold it together a couple more years at least. But I'm sure as hell ain't investing in their ecosystem at this point in time other than a gamepass subscription. I mean I want to buy fighting and 2D games on my Xbox due to the better d-pad on the controller. But I know for sure PS6 will be coming and will be BC with PS5 at least.

Considering they just made the biggest purchase in gaming history along with buying up Bethesda and multiple other studios in the last 5-6 years, I'd say no.

Xbox as a console may be dead, or even just changing as a business. They might not even try to directly compete with PlayStation anymore as they really don't need to. They own the PC market so that's no a problem for them to sell on, and if they go 3rd party publisher, does anyone really care?

I actually think if they took less of a focus on their hardware, they might actually start producing decent games with all that money they have. I've always been a multiplatform gamer, this makes no difference to me.

I'll miss the hardware if they do though. They certainly got good at designing a small box but just never knew how to squeeze every last drop and make something truly special like they did with the 360.

Relax OP, here's their next console logo:

The next console is codenamed: Dream.

I think this is what will happen:

- The xbox brand isn't being discontinued
- But some (if not all) first party content will start shipping on other platforms, after a certain delay, not too different from how Sony treats PC ports these days.

You don't think the circumstances are markedly different between MS and Sony? Sony's 'To PC' strategy is well defined, whereas if MS suddenly say Starfield is coming to Ps5, when they've been claiming exclusivity all this time up to now, it'll feel like a desperation move, rather than something planned. That wouldn't exactly inspire confidence in the future...

I don't think the frenzied masturbotary console warring could hit any greater heights on gaf, but that would give it a good nudge

If it wont go down, it certainly started going down. The damage to the brand is severe and sales were already too low.
Also, i believe Series S was the main reason the xbox brand began the downfall

Can't believe the poll is at 50/50, a lot of denial on this board. Xbox is dead, all they will release in the future is a new controller and a Microsoft version of a Chromecast to hook to your TV, which may or may not have an Xbox branding.
If you consider that enough to vote BS.... like I said, in clear denial.

didn't follow the situation closely, but it started with a bunch of rumors and "leakers" basically confirming each other.

the only actual proofs i think are just two, but are big ones

-Some exclusive games are getting released to competitor platforms
-Recently MS is starting to refer to game pass as "MS gamepass" instead of "xbox gamepass"

both could be isolated decisions or part of a steer towards multiplatform.

the only thing sure is that most of the leakers know nothing and are just following the trend, if they got it right they'll put it on the pile of wins, if they don't they'll shrug and forget about it.

Also, when Microsoft literally tripped over themselves to give up exclusive rights to Activision's most popular games I knew it was over.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft isn't/wasn't closely watching the way Apple moves with the App Store and the precedent they just set with EU. Where Apple fulfilled their promise to open up iOS to 3rd party app stores...thereby fulflling the letter of the law. BUT....introduced a bunch of rules, restrictions, and fees along with it.

What's to stop Microsoft from explicitly tying future COD games to GamePass architecture and requiring Sony and Nintendo to allow GamePass in order to get COD? Again, that seems like it fulfills the letter of the law of non-exclusivity. And with the the app store wars raging here in the U.S. Something tells me that Sony and Nintendo might soon (5 years) have to open up the doors to 3rd party app stores and a potential full version of GamePass before that COD deal ends in 10 years. Whether they like it or not.

Things are about to heat up.
When you believe that Sony allowing GamePass on Playstation you are delussional...not gonna happen. MS needs Sony (and Nintendo) to urn money back from the almost 87 billion acquisitions they bought the last years. They bought Activision/ Blizzard on paper for 68 billion but with the closing cost is a whooping 75,4 billion, let that sink in..
Dont know about where Nintendo stands in this but Sony will allow Xbox games on Playstation ( but not GamePass) for a 30/70-20/80 split...thats gonna happen.

Selling between 15-20 Million copies across PS and Switch will deffo be the play. At least, for years.

And other than COD, what games that they have do you think have the capacity to sell that amount across Playstation and Switch?

You havent really specified what you mean, there are loads of outcomes:
Nothing changes
Some XBox games coming to rivals
All XBox games going to rivals
They are going digital only
They have new hardware available soon (digital only Series X)
They have new hardware in a couple of years (start next gen early)
They are getting out of the hardware business

Or any combination of the above

For me personally, I think they'll go digital only, there will be a digital series X and they will release 'some' games on rival consoles.

Edit: so I guess #TeamBelieveSomeOfIt? or #TeamSomeOfItIsBS?
The announcement will be a PC case with PC components in it branded (braindead?) as Xbox. The new Xbox is a PC! Xbox lan card, xbox memory, xbox ssd, xbox gpu with a small Jensen Huang looking nvidia demon-midget inside.

It won't do down next week, but it's certainly the beginning of the end for Xbox as we know it.

I expect Microsoft Games will be the new branding going forward.

I do think in a decade the whole thing will have evaporated and Mircosoft won't be in gaming.

Be interesting to see who else jumps in to fill the void....Valve maybe?

Nah!! Probably will say that new Xbox games will be day-one Game Pass for 6 months and then games will go to other platforms for $70. The cost of those day-one games will cause GP to go up by $5. New Xbox console coming out in 2026. No backwards compatibility of new games on XSS.

Not going down, your series x will become just another option for "MS games". Just like your smart TV, Playstation and next Nintendo console.

I think it's pure bs, lots of haters wishful thinking and fake rumors, Phil will just announce something GP related and that's it we're gonna have a next-gen Xbox.
Define going down.

I think most of the rumours are real and it will feel like it's all over to invested xbox fanboys that have been searching for copium all week.

To be honest- the only way i see Sony approving this is the stipulation that
A. Its no longer (Xbox Gamepass) which we may already be seeing in ads.
B. That the pass does not funnel gamers to Xbox hardware. (Which they may be pulling out from)

With those two in line and Microsoft strictly 3rd party- i am sure Sony will approve. No reason not to- it's just more revenue for Sony and a threat of another console eliminated.

Its a joke refering to the meme: "When will MS buy Sega?"..... next wednesday😁

ohhh okay, I missed the joke.

edit: Ash Wednesday would be a good choice, though. Xbox owners could put ashes on their forehead like Catholics (ashes are a reminder of mortality: "ashes to ashes, dust to dust").

Only rumors that have some proof to back them up : Hi Fi Rush and SoT coming on other platforms.

Conclusion : Xbox is going down.

Never change.

I don't think Xbox is "going down", sure, there's lots of smoke for there not to be fire but there's also mentions of the opposite (ie new hardware), not that I'll lose any sleep over it, in fact, I'd be actually interested in a portable console version (if that proves to be true) that can be connected to my TV and play the Xbox library - BC included.

Interesting times ahead indeed
