Is XCOM dead?

XCOM 2 was 9 years ago. Jake Solomon (director of XCOM EU and XCOM 2) left Firaxis after Midnight Suns flopped.

Apparently they work in the same building as Firaxis and they're making a Sims style game. 🤷‍♂️

I am one of the few people who actually liked Midnight Suns. The combat was fun. But XCOM reboots were instant classics. I even liked this game which seems completely forgotten and never gets brought up.

Seems like XCOM never hit sales that 2k was happy with. Which is a goddamn shame because they were so good. That gameplay loop is S tier and nothing else like it really exists.

But yeah, I wonder if we ever get another game at this point with publishers getting so risk averse. I've never even seen a rumor about a new XCOM and it's been 9 years. What a bummer. These games were both crack cocaine.

Yup, it's dead. Midnight Suns had cool combat, but everything else was dogshit especially if you were a fan coming from XCOM. Hopefully, that turn-based Star Wars game delivers.

Firaxis is in big trouble right now. Midnight Suns was excellent but flopped, Civ 7 is shit and everyone hates it. I think it's time to worry about the studio getting shut down honestly.

I liked XCOM a lot and its multiplayer, played with friends a bunch back in the day. Was sad when 2 didn't have multiplayer, but I guess the symmetrical design was a challenge. I even played Chimera Squad too, which is weaker, but still a welcome entry. I too think it's dead, which is a shame, but they got 2 solid games out of it.

I don't know if I'd want another XCOM from CURRENT Firaxis considering how a lot of their talent left after the Midnight Suns flop. And if you look at Civ7 it's pretty clear that they have internal issues and can't deliver a quality product with features that people actually want to see.

I like Midnight Suns. I have it on my Steam Deck OLED.

There are few things as satisfying as killing an Advent Soldier in XCOM 2.
I would love XCOM 3 it's one of my favorite games and genre (turn based)
Also i liked Midnight Suns

I'm a huge fan of the series since the original from 1993. It's probably the only piece of software that installed on every single PC that I had.

The first new one was ok, but X-com 2 with the expansion and the mods is probably the best Turn based strategy game out there. One of those rare cases where the sequel it's better than both the remake and the original.

I got both Chimera Squad (dirty cheap on one of those CD key sites, it looks like some diluted version of XCOM with DIE all over it) and Midnight Suns (free on epic or prime) but never played them.

I played enough of the reboot to beat it along with an ironman run for an achievement I think. But fell off XCOM2 really quick. Didn't really give it a proper chance, but always heard it was a big improvement. Always meant to give it another try, but so long as I'm here... what mods are you running, and would they be an improvement for a first playthrough?

I don't know for a first play through (I did at least 3 runs on this game, one Vanilla, one War of the choosen, and one long war with a bunch of extras)
If you zap through Nexus or the workshop you will probably find a bunch of "Vanilla" plus collections. But go with War of the choosen (the Xp) at least.

Imho Long War 2 (mod) gives the game another life. It nailed the felling of being the guerrilla opfor, which already is the coolest and the most well executed part of XCOM 2.

Aren't creators of Long War making their own "XCOM" game with even bigger scope. I think it's "Terra Invicta" which is more Grand Strategy vs tight tactical combat but you could call it a spiritual successor.

There is also Xenonauts 2 coming as well. And the first one was pretty decent.

As far as actual XCOM I think it's dead. Personally I thought Midnight Sun was ok, didn't quite dig the card combat and the "Social Links" were a dud. Really wish we got XCOM 3, it that doesn't seem to be on the menu 😔.

Bought midnight suns for like $11 at a point and it ended up being really fun. Didn't really care for the story though.

Really wanting another xcom since I love those games and those type of games. Just cant get enough of them

Surprised it hasn't happened already. Some of the departures (Jake Solomon, Garth DeAngelis) make me think an xcom game is highly unlikely anytime soon if it does stay open.

My dreams tactics game is a mass effect.
So simple. You have a spaceship and the galaxy map is your playground.
Already has great unquie races and classes .
You could easy be a Merc outfit before or after the reaper invasion.
Or could be a team putting out fires while Shepard's doing his thing.

yeah, from what i understand most of the people who made xcom xcom arent there anymore, so even if xcom3 is announced, who knows what we'll get

loved xcom and xcom2/expansions
moving my team up in formation while trying to cover all possible angles/flanks felt so good. extra fun doing this when the lost/zombies were around.
absolutely loved the inside-the-dropship loading screen--calm before the storm.
losing a seasoned character really hurt.

chimera squad sucked but it's better than nothing.

a proper xcom3 would be my most anticipated game of the gen

This is all because of the horrible forced friendship crap in Midnight Suns. The gameplay loop was excellent. The card based tactics were clever and fun.

Then I was forced to sit in a hot tub with Wolverine for some reason and the entire company fell apart.

Thanks for reminding me of yet another American games studio that's failing :messenger_unamused:

Why the fuck can't we make games anymore?

That meme hurts me plenty, but it's the sad reality. Civ 6 sold so much they can afford to support firaxis some more years, but a new xcom? Really doubt.

On the bright side the small studios market has plenty of tactical games
