Now that it’s been a week, let’s predict Marathon’s fate.

What is Marathon’s fate gonna be like:

  • Masaive hit, a shot at Fortnite money bag.

    Votes: 6 2.3%
  • Moderate success, growth with updates

    Votes: 121 46.4%
  • DOA, Concord 2

    Votes: 134 51.3%

  • Total voters

I am sorry for the studio, but after the comments from publisher CEOs that there is so much potential in GaaS, I think we need another huge failure, in the hope that they finally learn.

I mean if the feedback is no longer organic how will they know where to advance in gameplay? .
The game itself is one of their issues. They absolutely know what they need to do better; if I remember correctly, the Dr. Lupo dude has been playing/consulting (among others) this game since 2018.

The other issue with this game/studio is the awful PR they have gained over the years.

Game looks fresh. All the concord wishing crowds make me want the game to succeed more.

I think it'll do OK at its worst. Bungie are a talented bunch so the gameplay will be solid.

And while the visuals are a bit of a love/hate thing, for me at least, it's unique and consistent. In a crowd you'll instantly be able to pick out which game is Marathon, which I think is a good thing.

Probably a moderate success.

It won't be another Fortnite, but also not another Concord.

Still too early to really tell though.

If it's $40, between 5 and 8 million players in the first 3 months. Will fall off and go free to play after a year.
This is probably the right answer.

Get the initial dev costs back upfront then if the base drops off go FTP to make more from MTX. Unless it really pops off.

$40 + season pass + well lets be honest...other dlc loaded to the teeth. Only 3 maps at release. We all know how these things usually go. I won't touch it. But hey good luck to them.

In comparison - Helldivers 2 - $40 dollars...and...well thats it. Lots of content at release and to this day continuous support.

Guess which one is successful and which one may not be.

I think Marathon's biggest issue is how niche the "extraction shooter" genre actually seems to be

Most of us have heard of Escape from Tarkov but who has actually played it? Very few people in the relatively large FPS genre community, I would guess

Maybe Marathon is the game which makes "extraction shooter" mainstream but if Tarkov couldn't do it after being available almost 8 years, and Hunt Showdown couldn't do it, and most of the others are tiny indie games, I feel like Bungie will find it hard to get anyone interested in such a hardcore and niche shooter genre

Im going with DOA, but im not wishing it that way or finding it funny ect.
If this was 10yrs ago, I think it might be do ok and grow over time, but this day and age to release a game like this for a price in a crowded market your going to be up against it. If it was free to play it would have a chance, but I dont feel people will want to take the risk, maybe im talking for myself though.

I'll say the reveal was not great, the artsytle is meh, the amount of content is shocking and the graphics are from a generation ago, but Bungie can still do great gameplay and that may just save it.

I think it will be a moderate success and that Bungie will fix and mold the game, based off of people's wishes.

They often overstepped or made changes that weren't liked by the Destiny community. But they listened and adapted, most of the time.

I hope the price of this game will be really low, that's how they can get a big playerbase.

And as we've seen with Overwatch 2 and many other games, a lot of people want PvE gameplay. If Bungie doesn't push Marathon too hard as an eSports sweaty game and more as a dynamic game that also offers a bunch of great PvE content. Then we are golden. I think.

It won't be as bad as Concord but it won't be a moderate success either. I give it about year before it shuts down.

If Skull and Bones got to Year 2, Marathon should be fine. I believe it will find a decent pool of players, for the first 1-2 years at least.

That's very true. I have seen countless comments about their removal of paid DLC in Destiny and other bad practices. As much as people love the game play Bungie provides, there's some negativity surrounding them - and rightfully so. I would be livid if a company removed my paid content.

OT: I predicted moderate success. Bungie has fans and a following and there's always a market for good GaaS games. But this one is not exactly getting a great response so far. It could go either way, imo. Depends on the quality of the final product and how Bungie handles the feed back they're getting now and will get through player testing.

There should be 4th option coz no game will be as bad as concord, that sold 25k copies worldwide, but since in my prediction marathon wont be even a moderate success (say 100k ccu on steam), i have to go with DOA.
4th option should be big bomba but not of concord proportions, kinda like suicide squad or bit above, still 0 profit even if it made some revenue.

Why not wait until you actually play the game instead of picking & choosing how games will be before you even experience them. We are in strange times & I believe it will only hurt gaming in the end.

Nobody has ever not tried to predict how good a game will be before it comes out.

Even a kid renting NES games will try and predict the best games to pick out so he doesn't waste a five dollar opportunity with his parent

This kind of game isn't really in my sphere of interest so I don't really know how it will perform. I think it might do okay initially thanks to the interest from Destiny fans.

I think they are doing everything they can to create an Extraction shooter the casuals with want to engage and stay with.

Destiny
Fortnite
Cod
Apex
Tarkov

This is the audience Marathon is trying to bring over, as a GAAS. Which means they want all of your time.
I don't see any of these entrenched communities ditching their game to play Marathon full-time. The exception is Destiny.

If it's confirmed that you have to buy, it's dead. If it's free, it will be Sony's Apex Legend

This is the part that I'm talking about with judgment of games not being based on the games .

Gotta keep in mind that Tarkov is a PC game.
Hunt Showdown is quite niche indeed.

The benefit Marathon could have, is that Bungie is a AAA-dev, console-centric and has the backing of Playstation.

I'm going with moderate > growth, but I really align somewhere between DOA and moderate. I'm not confident in growth. I expect moderate, slow death, then switching to a more F2P model to avoid shutting down the game.

bungies fandom and gunplay will push it through whatever hiccups it will have at the start...updates will partially solve issues, part create new ones.

let's remember that bungie character design has never been their strogest asset, since halo, so let's no act like they need to make another Overwatch to sell copies.

It will do okay. The real questions are how much will it cost, how much is the battle pass, how bad are the microtransactions, and will you have to pay for the fabled fourth map? This is Bungie, they have fucked Destiny with type of shit.
I'm thinking the game will be 40 and the battlepass 20 per season. 5 dollar skins, 15 dollars for the "raid" maps

No way will skins be just $5.

Look at what the completion charge. $15 and up, minimum.

A paid for extraction shooter in highly competitive field of games featuring a name no one under 50 has nostalgia for with visuals unappealing to the extraction shooter crowd.
