It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

That's pretty shit. It's always nice to have some games which can be played without data. You don't always have data, especially when travelling to other countries where data costs and arm and a leg.

For you.
Every mobile game app i have requires constant internet connection
I don't see the big deal here...

I have a ridiculous ammount of paid mobile games, around 200. I've went through most of them and haven't yet been faced into a single one that requires a internet connection.

That seems like you have a bigger issue there than whether or not you can play Mario.

You should be better than this.

If there isn't a ton on noise on this, always online will be standard on every Nintendo mobile game going forward. Bang those pans now or this shit will be the new normal.

It'll be normal anyway because 100% of them will be based around social elements. That was the whole point for them getting in after all. This one just happens to be a pay once experiment. It's probably not going to fail, but if it did it would just solidify pay to play for all future titles.

Super Mario play, stop when you're in a tunnel, play, stop when out of coverage, play, stop when out of data, reload data and run some more.

This is fine for my phone since that's connected 99% of the time, but I'm not going to be able to play it on my iPad out of the house unless I have a WiFi connection. :(

People are not going to throw down 10 bucks on a mobile game because of social features. They want to play Mario wherever they are, and they're going to be rightly pissed when the game prevents them from doing so.

I think people forget that this game can be bought on a tablet with no 3g/4g option whatsoever. So basically only wifi would be an option. Many parents now get their kid a tablet to play in the car... No Super mario run for them i guess

Seconded. Mountains out of molehills

Presumably the kingdom mode is running persistently on their server and your "ghost" is being recorded in on World Tour mode for use in the Toad Rally mode and collected coins adding to your kingdom mode's count. Hence, all 3 modes working together
Hey here's a reasonable reply/explanation on page 1 everyone on page 1 ignored.

It still totally sucks, though.

The problem to me is that if it's always connected and recording yhe ghost it will be another battery drainer like PokeGo

Just to provide some more insight here. This game in particular im not sure why they would need the connection beyond the update/piracy thing. But any app interested in delivering new content to users basically will require a connection. Google store and Apple store can be very strict in how they approve content and so the only real way to get around that is to have hooks in the app for external downloads, and of course that requires an internet connection. I have to say shit isnt as insidious as you may think when it comes to the phone/tablet ecosystem. But yeah, i would suspect the new Mario game to have a set bunch of levels that dont require an online environment outside of leaderboards. I really dont see google or apple rejecting a mario game.

Do you know what an underground tunnel is

almost every subterranean subway in NYC doesnt cut off 3g/4g connections. also dont plenty of airlines have free wifi now?

If a game like pokemon go with constant online can be downloaded and played by half a billion I really do see this being a huge issue

It's absolutely insane for a game that you pay $10 to buy forcever to require this. But it makes sense based on Nintendo complete bullshit understanding of how to connect the internet to its games.

If subway in NYC have internet or 4g it's only at the stops. So you wouldn't be able to play st all because you wouldn't be connected for 95% of the trip. Seeing people try to justify Nintendo requiring this is absolutely disgusting.

It's a package, you get it whether you want it or not because that's what Nintendo is going for on mobile. Otherwise, you buy a Switch.

I don't think you actually played Pokemon Go if you thought the constant online wasn't an issue. And yeah, the NYC subway blocks phone signal in most stations and every tunnel.

Pokemon go: free and GPS is used so 3g/4g made sense

Super Mario Run: not free, 3g/4g mandatory doesnt make sense.

That is news to me. Last time I was on a plane, I had the priviledge of overpaying for shit wifi service.

Probably a dealbreaker for me since I mostly only mess around with phone games at work, and we get shit reception and wifi inside (hospital). Since I only have android devices I wasn't really worried about it day one obviously so I guess I'll see how the game itself actually pans out first at least.

"Free": You could be paying up to a thousand dollars on a "free" game.
(No joke, there are people that have spent even more than that on a "free" game.)

What?

air lines? Free wifi? I've only flown air canada and westjet lately and they sure as hell aren't free

Pokemon go is free to play and isn't really a stationary game

Every console game could be always online and I wouldn't care, but it's super annoying on mobile. I want to play these games during my commute.

Well they just saved me 10 bucks. Oh well. Life will go on. Besides who knows. Maybe one day if it ever goes on sale or something I'll pick it up.

Neither of these are true in my experience and I fly multiple times a year and live right outside NYC.

I don't like it, but my phone's almost always connected to the internet anyway so I guess it will almost never be a problem for me.

Annoying but I expect this game to lose its appeal quickly so I doubt I'll have the urge to play it somewhere without an Internet connection.
