It appears Super Mario Run will require an internet connection at all times

I can't help but feel like that they should have just rolled with the Cheating and Piracy over giving the consumer a less flexible product.

This is a huge new initiative for them. I assume they don't want Mario to instantly be the most pirated app ever the day after launch. It's probably a greater concern for the Android version, but they'll have it on iOS for parity at least.

I dont understand some people here saying "ohh but it is a mobile game".

Errr, excuse me? I have played countless mobile games and none of them required me to stay connected to the internet all times.

In fact, that would be a HUGE inconvenience for me since I mostly rely on the College wifi, which is not very good.

I didn't know there were so many passionate mobile phone gamers here.

Surely that means you've experienced having to play at least one game that required an internet connection like say... Terra Battle?

So no airplane usage unless you pony up for in-flight wi-fi, and no subway use unless you're lucky enough to have subways with on-board wi-fi. Pretty terrible decision and anti-consumer. Always online is not a requirement for most paid mobile games.

I play lots of games on my iPad.

None of them require an internet connection.

Because I often play on my iPad without an internet connection.

I don't see why anyone would consider this bizarre.

Also worth mentioning that Miitomo requiring an internet connection means it is pretty laggy to do anything. To boot up, to move between menus etc, you spend a lot of time looking at a loading screen.
This is my greatest concern with an always-online game on mobile. I've played some others that seem to minimize the internet connection "load" time, but it always seems to stick out like a sore thumb.

I'm hoping for the best. Nintendo and Apple really need to put their best foot forward with this.

I'm not a passionate mobile gamer. I'm a casual mobile gamer who will play mobile games whenever I need to entertain myself and don't have a book around/don't have data/wi-fi. Thus, none of the mobile games I own require an internet connection. Thus, I won't be bothered with downloading Super Mario Run.

Seriously, how many times are people going to have to say this?

There are NO microtransactions

There is a paid unlock which is an ingame purchase which you'll have to be online to make and for which they may wish to do server side receipt verification on.

Can't wait to see Mom hand her phone to little Timmy on the 5 hour cross country flight and struggle to figure out why Super Mario won't work...

Not only this. Tens of millions of people in the world commute with subway, and this would have been their perfect commute game.

Also, ipad exists.

Which cities don't have coverage in their subways so I can know to cross them off my visit list. Seriously, I thought Melbourne was slow to get signal underground and that was a year ago.

It'll still get cracked, I wonder what their excuse will be then.

Evidently, subways are just a myth. Just like the Chupacabra or Geometry.

Online requirement won't stop pirates. If anything, they'll have a better experience than us because they'll play it offline.

Like what happened with Sim City 2013, pirates got to play the game offline since launch!

Nintendo protecting their IP.
Might be a good idea for games on Switch as well, seeing as most Nintendo consoles get hacked pretty quickly.

Yeah, it would be a great idea.

I am sure Microsoft thought the same thing with the Xbox One reveal.

Now because of that great idea they are just 20 million consoles behind the market leader.

...hate me...
I will still buy the game but this isn't very nice. Let's forget about the the iPod Touch but what about the iPad for
example? Needs to be tethered all the time in order
to play the game.

Not a good look when your games costs $/€10, not cheap for mobile standards. At a minimum should be playable anywhere, anytime.

Knowing Nintendo, it's probably a draconian anti-piracy measure.

Nintendo is different. Their fans will buy anything they come up with.

So if Nintendo decides to end the service for whatever reason (like other developers have done in the past), the game would become unplayable?

Most of Toronto besides the part when you're headed to Kennedy or passing by Rosedale. Some parts of Vancouver besides when you're going to Metrotown.

Lots of parts of London is underground

So im not sure why particularly this game requires a constant connection. Like i said im a mobile developer and our game requires a connection. Reasons for this are varied, but the main one is obviously if you plan to dynamically update the content in your game you cant simply submit a new version every day. You need an ability to upload shit outside of an external approval process. When you submit a compile you are subject to apple or google deciding to approve it. It is slightly weird Mario Run would need this. My particular app requires a connection simply to download new content and get around having to download a giant bloated upfornt process. Mario Run seems a bit more straight forward in what is is delivering.

Not sure why everyone is accepting this just because it's Nintendo. It's complete bullshit. It makes sense with the free to play games which have to try to sell you stuff every few minutes but makes no sense with a game after you've paid $10 to buy it.

There is absolutely no reason it needs to connect to the internet afte you've paid to buy the full version.

There are two reasons the game needs to be online at some point after purchase

1. to facilitate the ingame unlock purchase
2. to allow the social/competitive elements

Of course, requiring to be online ALL the time rather than disabling those two aspects when offline would appear to be a strategic choice, perhaps for simplicity or consistency in the experience.

How would the social features work then?

If there isn't a ton on noise on this, always online will be standard on every Nintendo mobile game going forward. Bang those pans now or this shit will be the new normal.

No big deal for me. I don't think I've been in many situations where I didn't have internet on my phone. I guess I won't be playing this while in an airplane, but otherwise...
Wonder what they'll do about the whole being able to play on the subway on your way to work or school though. Many subways around the world don't have internet while moving from one station to the next.

I have to say me getting involved in the game dev process in unexpected ways has really opened my eyes to how much is taken for granted and how difficult it is to actually live up to expectations. Lots of stuff goes on people dont think of or even should think of really.
