lol exactly.For $8 a month, I could:
Get Disney Plus, and watch a bunch Star Wars, Marvel, and classic Disney content.
Get Hulu, and watch a bunch of movies and television programs.
Get Twitter, and watch a bunch of people call each other racists and degenerates.
I disagree in that it only takes or or two mentally ill people whipping things up on Twitter to affect real change. Corporations take Twitter extremely seriously (because it is the platform of choice for the institutional class)..Elon is going hard to root out the bots.
That said, I scroll through my twitter feed like twice a day tops, and 95% of it random vapid garbage. It would make zero difference to me if I see it or not.
A lot of people vastly overestimate their significance on the platform. "Oh no, if I'm not verified my post about how frustrating it is to wait in line at the supermarket will end up at the bottom!", yeah nobody cares.
I wouldn't think so. As I posted above, it is likely they are referring to replies which I don't think there is any way to currently sort chronologically - they have always been algo driven. But who knows, Elon is clearly doing this shit on the fly by the seat of his pants so it could end up being anything at this point. It is going to be super interesting to see how this all plays out.So unless they remove this option nothing is really changing.
They’re flocking to a dead site. It's really nice that he is trying to destroy Twitter but I think he shouldn't be so heavy handed as for users to all flock to another site at once.
They’re flocking to a dead site.
They’re flocking to a dead site.
Especially when one of the options is fucking disney channelThis isn’t as effective an argument as you might think.
Great idea. People can still use Twitter for free but verified users get a boost.
Sounds great to me and will help combat bots and spam. What's the problem?
If the institutional collective on Twitter decided to that the war in Ukraine had to end tomorrow, it would end tomorrow.
Every western leader is obsessed with Twitter.
Outside of being dumb, seems just as likely bots and spam pay the $8 to get seen. Not that I’m a comment reader to begin with but I’m expecting a lot more crypto comments to be at the top
Right and $8 isn’t much for a propaganda network to invest in. And you’ll still see bots everywhere in the comments and literally everywhere especially if there aren’t enough people paying and creating content.
I doubt 1 bot is worth 8 dollars. Also as I understand it, the current verification rules will still apply except for the notable section. https://help.twitter.com/en/managing-your-account/about-twitter-verified-accountsWas. I don’t know what the alternative will be though.

Not in the new system.also need to provide a government issued ID + other legal documentation.
It not? I dont have a twitter account, but I checked it. Since it's open up now, I just checked a Maple Leafs post and all the tweets are chronological (by the first reply, not replies of replies). It's not chronological now.
Not in the new system.
If twitter gets destroyed, that would be a win.
Well that’s good. I know a lot of Japanese artists left the site after getting harassed for whiter skin tones and such, when actually it’s just a cultural thingBtw the drama in Japan has been amazing. Musk fired the lot of them and overnight the trending topics switched from the usual cultural and political nonsense to being made up entirely of manga, games and pop music. It turns out that people simply enjoy - and always have enjoyed - chatting about the things that make them happy.
Maybe the rot stops here?
seems to me that the only people mad at this are the ones that lived their lives through this cesspool, if you want your ePoints, now you'll have to pay for them.
Every third post is an advertisement. Why is it Facebook makes so much money? They’ve never had to charge a subscription.
They're oh so oppressed.Yeah, I don't understand the posters being on the side of the blue checkmarks. This doesn't affect 99% of the users on Twitter, as always it's that 1% screaming and yelling.
Peterson isn't banned.
I can't tell the difference between those 3 these days.
This.
Blue checks mad about this are upset they can’t use their anon alt accounts to brigade and cancel people anymore.
Ha ha ha. Get fucked Elon
No way in hell I’m paying to use that hellsite. He’s going to bury the fucking thing completely if he does this.
It’s been fairly entertaining shit show watching him try to figure this out in real time. Although for supposedly championing free speech, he sure is banning a lot of people for making fun of him.
He does seem incredibly thin skinned. More so than I think anyone thought.
As far as I'm aware, he's only banned people for impersonating him. I would think that no impersonating other users has likely been a twitter rule for years now. People seemed to go really quickly from being concerned that their accounts could be impersonated without consequence, to being really upset that account impersonations had consequences. It’s been fairly entertaining shit show watching him try to figure this out in real time. He set up a rule that parody accounts must be labeled as such, so Ethan Klein followed that rule and made fun of him and he got whacked. As far as I'm aware, he's only banned people for impersonating him. I'd give you that Musk's rule was vague and poorly explained, but if you're not changing your Twitter name to something like "Elon Musk (parody)" then you're still going to appear in every tweet that isn't on your actual twitter page as the person you're "parodying." Klein added a note to his bio, which isn't anything people see when he's replying. He set up a rule that parody accounts must be labeled as such, so Ethan Klein followed that rule and made fun of him and he got whacked.
True. Given how twitter works, it wasn’t obvious. Also, Klein made a lot of posts that were closer to defamation than simply being a joke.I'd give you that Musk's rule was vague and poorly explained, but if you're not changing your Twitter name to something like "Elon Musk (parody)" then you're still going to appear in every tweet that isn't on your actual twitter page as the person you're "parodying." The funny thing about all of this is that it's not a new system Musk put into place. If people used their verified accounts this way six months ago, I'm sure the result would have been the same. As I said before, hit pieces will be written criticizing Twitter for problems that always existed with the site. It seems like I was right.

I get that, but he was using his verified status on top of it. If he wasn’t verified, it probably wouldn’t have mattered as muchIt's how parody accounts always worked, info in bio.

So much irony from when we had a Politics board. Thick.Free Speech*
*Speech is not actually free. Pay me.
Ethan Klein followed that rule and made fun of him and he got whacked.
No they went to Tiktok instead.I think the end of social media as we knew it is upon us. The kids don't like fb, Instagram with its shadow bans and now Twitter with this.
