It's like the typical western game which contains soldiers that wear sci-fi suits equiped with big guns and fightning aliens. (half-life, halo, metroid, duke nukem, quake and doom to name a few)

It's difficult to not create a generic looking artstyle today.

I actually like the art direction, it's oriental enough without being anime-ish. The thing is, the graphics are really not good - unless it's very low jpeg compression the textures are way too blurred (bilinear and low res) and objects/buildings are too blocky (low poly). There isn't even any bumpmapping on walls/floors etc.. It just has the bloom effect (is this the new big thing or what?) This far into the generation, I would expect much better. I dare say it doesn't look better than KOTOR..

I played through the entire Jade Empire demo a few times at Summerfest a few months ago, and I was really pleased. The combat was fluid, and the game looked great in motion. The combat and transformation system works really well.

I'm hoping that the relatively low-poly props and backdrops will translate to better framerates than the Odyssey engine (KotOR). If the game looks like it does in screenshots and manages to run at a steady 30 FPS, with long draw distances and good AI, I'll be satisfied. As far as the lack of bump-mapping goes, I'm frankly glad that they didn't go crazy with it--I think it's far more overused than bloom lighting is, effect-wise. Not every surface needs to look like it's made out of heavily-embossed plastic, which is what a lot of bump-mapped textures end up looking like.

I'm interested in seeing the game in motion. There's a lot that doesn't come through in stills.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Dynasty Warriors? I know that Koei was batting around the idea of Chinese voiceovers with subtitles as an option--IIRC, they even had a poll up about it on their webpage at one point. I don't recall hearing anything about Chinese voiceovers for Jade Empire.

I believe so. Jade Empire takes place in an original setting created by Bioware. It's a world heavily influenced by Asian themes, but it's not intended to be ancient China per se, just as Ivalice in Final Fantasy Tactics isn't medieval Europe despite all the castles, scheming noble families, and armored knights running around.

I can think of several PS2 games that looks worlds better than this game. Why do people make empty, thoroughly unconvincing statements like "These don't look like Xbox, they look like PS2"? The height of sophistry is where that statement soars to.

It doesn't always deliver, but the assumption is when you look at one machine and then at the other you expect the one that is "noted" for having greater graphical capabilities to, you know, actually have better looking games on it.

Regardless, Fatumi, the fact that Squeenix felt the need to fall back on the crutch of the effeminate man-child main character has doomed the game for me. I understand that is what is appealing in Japan, and that is the market that must be appeased for FF games to succeed, but I do not appreciate the continued cliched characters that Square recycles for it's games. I initially had very high hopes for FF XII, but when I saw the main character most of them died.

I am pretty new here but i have picked up on the "western sucks" attitudes by many here and the certain person told to go live in japan was called for.

I can understand that the word jap can be offensive but at the same time people like my grandfather who served in the war by cleaning up the dead, rotting corpses and restoring services in nagasaki can call them whatever they like. I also think its political correctness taken too far. But hey, JPN is just as easy as JAP and i am sure everyone would recognise it stands for japan.

No, I'd still whine about the poor textures, very noticeable slowdown, and low-poly cigar.

I'd also bitch about the lack of a useful camera (is it wrong of me to want to run "down"?) and the voice acting, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a "poor VA modulator" in the PS2.

Considering the focus on Jade Empire is 'action rpg' with 'real time combat' (as I understand it) I'm more interested in fluid controls and character animations than I am in Teh Graphix. This isn't to say they have a pass to make an ugly game. But really, if the game is stunning and then runs at 2 FPS, and is chunky as hell, whats the point? Keep the visuals warm and satisfying, but make_sure_the_framerate_is_solid.

In fact, as long as it looks better than Kotor I'll be happy. Note that I did not say Kotor 2, because that game is so fucking ugly my soul cringes every time I boot it up.
