9.5 Presentation
Many extras, cutscenes, options, modes and a very slick interface make Jak X a winning production. Classic Naughty Dog! Hooray!
8.5 Graphics
Cars and levels look amazing and the game runs great, but there isn't a lot of on-track activity.
7.5 Sound
The in-game music is unmemorable, especially considering the brief snippets of Queens of the Stone Age spread across a few cutscenes. The voices and effects are at least solid, though.
7.0 Gameplay
Too much emphasis is placed on the random acquisition of various weapons and too little is put on legitimate racing skill. My hand is also fixed in an eagle's claw thanks to the constant boosting.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Jak X features a satisfying singleplayer game, a very nicely put together multiplayer mode, and a good deal of bonus content.

The catchup AI issue bothers me a little bit, but the online sounds interesting and it sounds like it has great presentation. I'm a sucker for kart racing games so I'll proabably pick it up in the TRU 2 for 1 next week.

I'm not ashamed to admit that Crash Team Racing made me its bitch and I think it remains the last game I 100%'d, so Jak X will be mine.

Does this game fix the horrible controls that had to be suffered through in Jak 3? That's the only thing stopping me from picking this one up. I can't stand the thought of going through hours of crappy controls.

I played the Jak X demo and I was pleasantly surprised. I still don't know if I would have taken my platforming franchise in this direction, but Naughty Dog obviously made a quality car combat game out of it.

Nothing to be ashamed about anyways, It's one of the best kart racers ever, if not the best.

The demo of Jak X: Combat Racing was very good. It featured four levels which all played differently and demonstrated a lot of variety in the game.

The gameplay is an amalgamation of Burnout, Wipeout, and Twisted Metal, which in my book is a good thing. Two of the demo levels were open fields to drive around and battle it out, much like Twisted Metal. One of these had objects that would randomly appear, and the players would all try to be the first to capture it.

The other two were race courses. One was a fairly straightforward race, while another had you firing away at a lot of rather dumb drone cars. The latter was reminiscent of the new Traffic Attack events in Burnout Revenge, but with less cars, no oncoming traffic, and the need to shoot the other cars rather than ramming them.

The opening cinematic sequence was great, with lots of attention to detail. Once again, Naughty Dog's artists and animators show why they are virtually unrivaled in the video game industry. Some areas of the environment (particularly the wide open fields) looked like they could've used a bit of sprucing up, though. I don't know if the overall appearance will be as impressive as the rich environments of Jak 3, but it's still a fine-looking game.

I enjoyed the demo very much, and I look forward to getting this game tomorrow!

not bad at all, but I was expecting much better.

BTW, back in 1999 this is CTR review by IGN:

8.5 Presentation
Cartoon-like, straight-forward and helpful, players learn all the tricks in adventure. Everything else is solid. Nice replays too.
8.0 Graphics
Just like in Crash Warped, Crash and his buddies are clean and fast moving. The multiplayer mode looks great.
6.0 Sound
Forgettable but typical Crash music. Sound effects are ho-hum, too. And what's with Crash sounding like Luigi?
9.0 Gameplay
Solid kart racing. Little to no slowdown, lots of modes, and four-person multiplayer.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
You want to party? Grab three friends and have a blast with Crash. Deep modes and long play life, too.
