Reveal that the *real* plot is exclusive press rights and not "a war to drum up ratings" earlier on
Get rid of Teri Hatcher
ground the plot a bit more overall
I love Jonathan Price, but have him rein is in a little bit (consider how much more menacing he was in Game of Thrones while barely ever raising his voice)

The Brosnan films see like the closet ones to "good" that aren't good-- they're so frustrating that way.

With OHMSS, the original plan was to have them just driving off, and then for Tracy to die at the beginning of Diamonds Are Forever, thus setting off the revenge plot. I'm undecided if I'd like that better or not.

My changes to Spectre are pretty big standard

No Blofield twist.
Emphasis on Spectre as an organization in the background.
More Mr Hinx time (if you're going to have steel thumbnails, kill more than one person with them for fucks sake).
Controversial: blow up the Max Denbigh b-plot to be the a-plot, except with an actor who gives a shit. Keep Spectre for a third act twist.
Promote Belluci to main Bond Girl.

Movie has more problems, but that's my starting point.

I could get behind all of that. The B Plot in Spectre just felt like they needed a reason for the rest of the cast to be in the movie more than 5 minutes. It took away time from the A Plot but added nothing on its own. A movie focused on the dismantling of the 00 program would have be new, at least.

Watching 'Tomorrow Never Dies' again and it still so surprising how such a great idea for a film ends up delivering such an average film. Shame that it was filmed during the Brosnan era (not blaming him, but the series as it was was just on its last leg), because I honestly think redoing this one today would be really interesting with social media being what it is today.

I finally finished Spectre. Holyshit, that had to have been the most boring Bond movie I've seen. I was just completely uninterested in everything that was happening. Fell asleep during it the first two times I tried watching it. Really bums me out, I loved the other Craig movies, especially Skyfall. They fucked it up. Waltz was probably the worst bond villain I can think of.

It was the first Bond movie I saw, so I look at it (and TWINE as well) more fondly than most. Especially since I was 11 for TND and 13 for TWINE.

It's interesting to hear them be so candid about their process, and Bond is a proxy for Britain's current place in the world. I remember a lot of people thinking Trump becoming President would be a godsend for writers, especially comedians. But it's actually the opposite. Things have become so ridiculous that you can't exaggerate for comedic effect. And with drama, you'll just depress people because you're not telling a cautionary tale, it's a mirror of reality.

Maybe they should think outside of the box and go backwards. Do a Bond film set in the 1960s. You could still do ridiculous gadgets, they'd just be rudimentary versions of things we have today.

Sure, Blofeld's jailed, but since when has that stopped evil plans? Throw in some "Manchurian Candidate", some UKIP analogues, and a ludicrous evil plan that involves globe-trotting and voila.

I personally would like to see something like the first 30 minutes of Die Another Day. Have Bond behind enemy lines, abandoned by a Trump-like politician and with no allies, just his wits and survival instincts. And an interesting twist would be to just have one "Bond Girl" as a full-on enemy for the entire film.

I dunno if you guys have rewatched Spectre recently. I have. I feel like it actually plays a little better than it did when I saw it theatrically. Sure, all the problems are still there. But it also somehow feels more like a Brosnan Bond, especially once all the pre-release buildup is gone and you already know this isn't some serious, serious-minded pursuit of the Bond ideal, but an over-the-top, weird, big dumb spy movie that plays like a blend of For Your Eyes Only and Tomorrow Never Dies.

But directed by Sam Mendes.

I dunno. It's loopy, ramshackle, meandering vibe works a little better on lazy Sunday afternoon TV, where it sits next to a LOT of loopy, ramshackle, meandering Bond films in the canon the way I first watched them.

I couldn't get a read on what kind of tone Spectre was going for. It feels like a serious Craig Bond but told with goofier Bond beats, if that makes any sense.

God why can't we get rid of Purvis and Wade?

I know we are talking about next movie and not next Bond (I'm assuming those are still different movies), but as for shaking things up I think the next Bond should be in his mid/late 20's to match young Q. Partially so we can reach a fourth movie without him approaching 50.

Nah, that makes sense. That exact same thing was getting in my way in the theater too. Something about watching it on a Sunday afternoon at home just caught me in a different mindset than opening weekend with all the thunder that accompanies it. It doesn't actually feel that serious, or at least it didn't to me on that rewatch.

It's still an ungainly beast that makes too many mistakes, but it also, on rewatch, feels much more at home in the canon than I initially thought it did.

It felt like trying to shoehorn Craig's hard nose Bond into a prototypical Bond film and he was never that guy.

Oh right bumped the thread to wonder what's going on... like not hearing any real movement on the next movie.

Assuming we're getting another Bond movie next year, when should we expect to hear an update on it? This summer? Guess it depends on whether or not Craig returns or they have to spend time recasting the part.

BBC had a marathon over the weekend. I saw From Russia with Love for the first time. Wonderful movie. One of the best in the series

That is a very fair point.

And ironically, I think SPECTRE makes a ton more sense in the modern age... but guess won't need to play America and Russia against each other

From Russia is some good stuff. Great looking film, probably Connery's best performance, great Bond girl, the BEST rival character, great action scenes (that train fight, damn), and aside from the second act lull in the gypsy camp, is one of the few Bond films that are watchable the whole way through.

Lego James Bond with the alcohol, cigarettes, and sex would be pretty hilarious. I mean what would be left if they had to take those thing out? Plus the missions are usually above the target Lego demographics understanding or too boring for them.

I haven't read any of the non-Fleming books.

I do wonder if they filmmakers are ever going to go to any of those novels for film inspiration? Although they'd then have to cut those authors into profits too, wouldn't they? Can't imagine they'd want to do that if they didn't have to.

Well, one of the more recent ones "Solo" is actually set in the 60's, and yeah he is smoking in that one.

I would guess the authors sign a lot of their rights away because they are writing for the license. More of a you need us more than we need you situation.

The time has sadly sort of passed now. Some of the stuff being written around the Brosnan era was clearly writers working with Brosnan's Bond in mind and I dare say any one of those novels would've adapted to film better than TWINE and certainly DAD. The books were contemporary technology and villain plots that made sense for the time, but under Craig the books have taken a different direction entirely and most of the current Bond novels have divorced from the post-Fleming continuity a string of other writers set up in the 80s and 90s and are now writing direct continuations of the original novels set in the 60s.

These aren't bad, broadly speaking, but the problem is the settings and stories would take a lot more work to adapt to a contemporary setting.

...Unless their post-Craig move is to do a period piece Bond, which we do know they entertained briefly around Casino Royale time before Craig was cast.

Based on Skyfall and SPECTRE, principal photography should be underway by November 2017 if they intend to hit November 2018. If that holds true, yes, this summer is when we will get some info.

Hoping Craig steps down. Last two films were trash and the dude is hitting 50. I don't want another, "You're too old for this shit Bond" film or "He's not in MI6 anymore, but really he is". If he sticks, either do the full Bond cheese shit or give him a solid send off. Stop trying to do both.


Since I'm seeing TND talk, I still quite like the film. For me, it's Bronsan's classical one. Each Bond seems to get one, that for all purposes isn't bad, but isn't great. It's just sort of there, but it follows the Bond formula pretty well. Villain was fun, girl was good, action was good, intro was aces, etc. But it sort of has the mediocrity to it also I can't shake anymore. The lousy, I'm not going to try anything different.
