The spider part was hilarious and so out of place in that movie. But that's probably why it is so funny.

I've listened to about half of the LALD episode of James Bonding and I'm really disappointed that they enjoy the movie so much. It's so uncomfortably racist. Fuck that movie so much. I can't believe the song is associated with that mess.

Eh, to be fair, early days and all that. Dr No also did a hell of a lot right. But yeah, when it was funny, it was funny because it was the first movie. From Russia With Love remains my favourite. It's just perfect to me. My only gripes are the weird and pointless Gypsy fight, and the fact that, although so damn enjoyable, about a third of the movie is pointless.

And yeah, TECHNICALLY, Live and Let Die isn't necessarily a bad movie (it's actually quite good), but way too many people overlook its racism. It's best viewed from a historical viewpoint, as in a "this is what old movies WERE like" manner (and even then, it's very uncomfortable). But yes, if you're just watching it as a movie, it's easily the absolute worst due to the racism.
I regret to say that it was one of my favourites when I was a kid, as I didn't quite understand what racism is, let alone how racist the movie was.

Also, compressed air pellet death.

Die Another Day remains a close second, although I was one of the few who enjoyed how terrible and stupid it was. 2/3rds of it were pretty fun, if you view it as a dumb action movie. But a Bond movie it ain't.

I legitimately haven't seen any movie from the 70s as blatantly racist as LALD. Not even legit blaxploitation movies. Which god damn it, why wasn't Pam Grier a Bond girl in that? She had been around for a couple of years before LALD. She should have been one anyway. At any point in the 70s. INSTANTLY would have been the GOAT Bond Girl. Not even close, either.

Die Another Day is the most miserable of all the Bond movies. There are others that are more boring, but DAD is just bad. Everything about it is so bad. From the CGI to the story to the awful awful awful WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE references to the other movies, to the music. It's just dog shit from start to finish.

It would have been awesome to see another Brosnan movie after Die Another Day, just to see how fucking awful it could be.

Although we might have missed out on the awesome reboot that was Casino Royale.

LALD is possibly the most racist movie ever made, yes. Everyone black is evil, everyone white is good. Bond movies were actually rather abhorrent in general, but it just took the biscuit. To be fair, I have to watch most of the older ones from a Historical viewpoint, if only to get over the sexism and homophobia and classism (another somewhat touchy subject that's rarely ever referred to, strangely). Also, I agree with you on Pam Grier. She'd have fit the role perfectly.

DAD made me want a rapier and a suit of electricity.

...

... It's about a Korean who cheats death by getting impossible surgery, leading to the side effect of being unable to sleep, all the while he becomes a billionaire. It's so bad, it's... Almost good. But mainly bad. Brosnan movies were weird in general, though. Even Goldeneye, which, although a HIGHLY enjoyable and well-made film, is especially... Dated.

Nice to see some Wint and Kidd appreciation, too. It's not even stated that they work for Blofeld. They're just... There. And if they bothered to leave Bond alone after Blofeld's death, they would have had the distinction of being among the few henchmen who actually survive a movie. In fact, come to think of it... Are they even henchmen? Or just weird murderers who just so happen to affect Bond? We may never know. Anyways, points also go to them for being genuinely believable threats, creepy, and Kidd's groovy beard.

EDIT: Actually, come to think about it, they did try to get diamonds for Blofeld. That doesn't mean they were directly working for him, though.

I'm fully down with Ibushi/Nak being 5 stars. But then he has the 4 way tag at 4 stars, so that makes me question every rating on the rest of the show. If that was 4 stars, Ibushi/Nak should have been 19 stars.

That 4-way tag was by no means a 4-star match.
It was significantly worse than the 3-team match between the Hooligans, Bucks and Splitters match I caught in person at Global Wars last year.

Yeah, I question a few of those rankings. The 4-way tag was 3 stars at best. Probably 2.75.

Put my thoughts in about each Meltz star rating below.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck Meltzer gave Nakamura/Ibushi from WK9 5 stars. Can't argue with that. What a fucking match.

The rest of the card:

Yuji Nagata won the New Japan Rumble in 26:09. *1/2

-agreed. This was nothing special outside of the legends appearing.

Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly retained the IWGP jr. tag team titles over Alex Shelley & Kushida, The Young Bucks and Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov in 13:01. ****

-disagree. 3 stars at best. There have been better six-mans and three-ways between these teams and combinations of other wrestlers. Much preferred the three-way @ ROH Global Wars and the six-man with The Bucks @ ROH Final Battle

Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Tomoaki Honma beat Yujiro Takahashi & Jeff Jarrett & Bad Luck Fale in 5:35. **1/4

-I guess. Honma hitting the headbutt and Jarrett missing the guitar shot were nice.

Toru Yano & Naomichi Marufuji & Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste beat Takashi Iizuka & Shelton Benjamin & Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer in 5:15. **

-agree. Least memorable match of the night.

Minoru Suzuki beat Kazushi Sakuraba in 9:21 in a UWF rules match ***3/4

-3.5 or .75 seems on point for this one. Good stuff.

Togi Makabe pinned Tomohiro Ishii in 12:23 to win the Never Open weight championship. ****1/2

-a bit too high. 4 stars flat for me. Still really good.

Kenny Omega pinned Ryusuke Taguchi to win the IWGP jr. heavyweight title in 13:20. *** 3/4

-need to re-watch this. Think it was 3 or 3.5 for me.

Katsuyori Shibata & Hirooki Goto beat Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows in 9:00 to win the IWGP tag team titles. ***1/2

-I'm good with this. Solid match with a feel-good ending.

A.J. Styles pinned Tetsuya Naito in 14:25. ****1/4

-agreed. Really liked this match.

Shinsuke Nakamura retained the IC title pinning Kota Ibushi in 20:12. *****

-no argument. One of the best matches I've ever seen, period.

Hiroshi Tanahashi pinned Kazuchika Okada in 30:57 to retain the IWGP heavyweight title. ****3/4

-the post-match added to this. 4.5 or 4.75 is right where I'm at with this too. Superb main event with some great reversals.

Uguuuu. So cold. -8. Feels like -23. Plus wind. Get that shit out of here. It was in the 50s not even a week ago. I was going to go back to the liberried today but I'm not about to go jump my car to get it started and then hope it starts back up at the library. I feel like this happened last year, too. SUPER mild Nov/Dec and then record cold in January.

This dude just has one of those faces you want to smash with a brick. I don't know what it is, have nothing against the guy, probably have only seen maybe two of his matches at best.

Low Ki is a pretty unique dude and in-ring performer. His name literally means "demon warrior." Nobody like him in the ring. Whether you like his comic book mannerisms or not is a matter of personal taste. I'm in the middle, but leaning more towards being a fan. He's had some great matches in his career. And he was the first ever ROH champion, so they really believed in him.

So, the thing I'm getting from the Impact reviews last night is that I should check out Austin Aries vs. Low Ki. I'll try to track it down at some point today. Wanna give TNA a chance despite the totally illogical ending.

The bloom has been off the Low Ki rose for like...10 years now. He never evolved his game and is stuck in 2002 puro mark US indie mode. In addition to thinking he's a super bad ass for realz and frequently taking advantage of lesser known opponents for years. He's a little shit

I've seen enough really good matches involving him to be a fan, regardless of whether or not he has evolved his war crate. I get not being a fan of his because of that reason, though. And for the other reasons you mentioned.

I used to really enjoy Low-Ki ever since I first saw him on WWF Metal years ago, and thinking to myself "Why isn't this guy on TV as a regular". But then I found out exactly why years later. The man is just a spectacular hardheaded asshole. I can understand the difficulties of working in the WWE system, but to burn bridges with a handful of indies makes me not want to waste my time defending this mans character anymore. I'll say this though... The man has an incredible deep voice. I have no clue why he hasn't retired from wrestling, and just become a full-time voice actor?

Thinking about it, Rottweiler Low Ki is the only time he's actually changed his character in any meaningful way...or had a character. But he couldn't make that gimmick work on his own. Shame the guy's such an ass.

His voice is indeed pretty awesome. I think he'd do great as a voice actor, but I doubt that's something he's even considered. I'll tweet him and ask...

Also, happy Thursday, GAF.

100 Yen documentary is pretty good, but the white dude from Kotaku who lives in Japan trying to talk like he knows Japanese arcade history fucking sucks. I know at least 5 amateur youtubers who speak more knowledgeably and with better annunciation than this dude. And they live in the states.

Brock Lesnar - Rey Mysterio was great. Similar narrative to the one Brock-Eddie did a few months later when Eddie finally won the gold.

Brock flailing around on some of the shots and reversals Rey's doing, I wonder if Austin and whomever would be calling him weak. The crowd is awesome though, and Cole-Tazz sound like a HoF duo compared to today's commentary.

Sabin looks like he has had some rough times.

It's an old promo pic.

I saw him in person last month and he looked great. Genuinely happy and full of energy. He had an excellent match with Ricochet. I yelled out "You guys are pretty good!" 3-4 minutes into the match, and both guys looked back and just smiled/laughed. Love that indy closeness.I got a $5 autographed picture of the guy just based on his performance that night.

Damn, we never got Zandig vs. Ki.

He was all right in NXT too specifically because he was forced to change a little.
