My place didn't shake, train for morning commute wasn't late, couldn't hear the wind or rain as I slept, you really wonder if a typhoon really came at all.

23区内だけど40階建の建物で台風じゃなくても強い風が吹くと結構揺れちゃう。耐震構造かなんかで揺れやすいんだと思う。

Haha, this is so cute! We're talking about typhoons and earthquakes, it really isn't that interesting. Basically the same as you have seen in English. www

It's easy to notice typhoons and earthquakes from earthquake resistant buildings. Normally I barely hear the rain but this weekend it was rattling a lot and I hear the wind coming down the kitchen fan.

I'm no architect but I believe it is healthy if a house can swing during an earthquake. It needs to be flexible enough to handle the pressure. We have earthquake proof windows as well, which is very reassuring. In many ways, typhoons can be more scary than earthquakes though. While I live in central Tokyo, I'm never going to be in trouble if there is a tsunami from an earthquake, but typhoon kind of affects everyone in a huge area affected. The wind from typhoons is also worse than earthquake swingings, anything can fall on anybody walking down a random road..

Looks so scary but I am ok. :)

That does look scary! Check out this one:

I just found this thread. Subbed. I plan on going to Japan with my vacation time next year. It will be my first time.

is it some random taifun pic or an actual picture from the one yesterday?

how's this even possible? shouldn't they like close of the airspace/all airports in times like these?

I got this app that shows all the airplanes flying in real time, and during the typhoon Japan was packed with airplanes flying all over, so...

I'm guessing this particular flight wasn't closed (the guy was flying from Australia to Japan) because the airplane wouldn't fly through the typhoon but above it.

Believe it or not, there were airplanes flying from Okinawara on both Saturday and Sunday. That's a little bit worse.. a lot of them were delayed a few hours though.

We need to be blunt as heck. New title suggestion:

"Wrong thread for travel tips. Link in OP!"

Then just a big fat link on the top of the OP:

So I am going to Osaka for 2 weeks on October 27th, any suggestions for things to do and see?

You can read my posts in the Japan Travel OT; I went to Osaka during Golden Week this year.

RE: OT title change...if you change my glorious OT title, I'll fight you all! :p

Somebody should figure out something better to put in the first post of the thread since it's full of travel advice right now :p

I'm listening.

Side note: If you write in all Japanese, please add a translation for the people in this thread that can't understand because they don't speak Japanese. :p

In fairness, the title is very vague.

As an aside, after almost two years living in Japan, I still find train etiquette to be a very strange thing. I understand it, sure - but I think it's where I often find the highest concentration of rudeness.

That actually hovered over our heads last weekend and Monday, bro. So scary.

Oh yes, please do not think about changing the title. It is not vague or confusion in any way. We talked about this a plenty in another thread which all lead to that OT title which many of us love. "Japan GAF" plus "I am not planning a trip, I LIVE HERE" is very clear cut so it shouldn't be anyone's problem if certain people do not read properly.

It's not so clear if it's still being misconstrued. Also, the nature of thread title (as per most community threads on GAF), comes across as an inside reference, rather than a clear descriptor. It actually doesn't bother me personally, but as long as people are going to be annoyed about people stumbling into here, it's probably something you should think about.

I did that first bit as a gag because I had no idea what everybody was saying, and the second one because Gromph wanted a silly title

I could use some gaf advice. I got a friend who is allergic to gluten (yes, she is 1 of like 10 people who are actually allergic) and I wanted to get her something for her birthday, like some gluten-free flour. rice flour should be gluten free, right? anyone any idea where I could buy something like that?

As a fellow non-native Japanese speaker, I say don't worry about it too much, and the more you write, the more comfortable you will be! Many folks in Japan never write, never get better at it, and always have a "complex".

私、文書でいつも使っている表現が全然自然じゃないけど、毎日毎日いろんなことを書くしかない！伝えたいことが通じるなら別にいい！
The way I write doesn't sound natural at all, but all one can do is keep on writing every day![ If you can get across what you want it say then who cares!

As for your question, I don't know. My wife is into vegan cooking, etc., which sometimes has overlap into gluten free, and she makes a lot of vegan/gluten tortillas (with beans likes soramame, soy, etc.) I'll ask her today.
Despite her being an amazing vegan cook, I still am able to gain weight!

Do they really need to translate what they type? Do other community threads do that? Giant blocks of meaningless spoiler tags. Put it in the J-go thread then?

I don't think they need to translate all they type, however the thread must be mostly in English with some lines/jokes every now and then in the language the OT alludes to, that's how other countries OTs do it.

The main forum language is English, i don't mind a bit of Japanese in the thread.

But as a courtesy for the people who don't understand i remind to put the translation.

I don't care at all (minus the dumb non-spoiler spoiler blocks). I just thought I remember seeing foreign language threads where people speak the foreign language. Which I guess is the j-go thread and not this one anyway.

went to Azabu Juban today to visit some old colleagues and they told me to check out Nisshin in higashi azabu. went there and they got quite a lot of gluten free stuff, It wasn't cheap though! about 700yen for a few slices of gluten-free bread. but hey, I guess it was worth it. They also got loads of other imported food stuff from all over the world.

Allright my fellow japan livers: here's a phenomenon I've noticed lately and curious if it's just me:

The "don't invade my token Gaijin turf" fellow Gaijin.

You make them less unique, thus they don't want to deal with you.

I've met three of them in the past month so: These people have either lived in Japan or visit Japan very often, Japanese is very good, can be found at sub-culture events. Don't really want to converse with you(Even today I overheard the guy telling Japanese fokls that he doesn't like being around Gaijin because he likes to be unique...) Generally I find these people to be extremely talkative types(aka most of the conversation is about themselves) etc.

I'm I just socially inadequate in dealing with my fellow foreigners, or do these people really exist?

I'd say they do. Some want to live in their own Japan bubble only interacting with Japanese people and acting like foreigners don't exist, when, well... even said person is a foreigner.

Now, I can understand not actively wanting to go to events where foreigners are the majority. I personally don't go to those foreign exchange events because they don't appeal to me (because the topics usually are things I don't care much about), but where I work there are more foreigners that I'm friends with, and I also like to hang around with other foreigners... not because they are foreigners, but because we just happen to like the same stuff. Even last weekend I hanged out with thetrin (does he post in this thread? don't think so...?) and a few other guys and it was awesome.

So yeah, that kind of people exist, indeed. Just leave them be, I've found a couple of them and they rarely have anything of interest to say either way.

I think he posted once, in the beginning.

I find there are less of those kind of people in the Kansai area. I can't think of any I met while living there, anyway. I've met a couple in Tokyo though. Completely anecdotal though.
