Definitely even without a price drop.Switch will outsell PS2.
That's a weird take, considering that launching at a later date in Japan would have been quite assurely read as disinterest in the regione. The stock Is limited anywhere worldwideThat's indeed fair. Not launching at a later date to avoid stock problems is not telling of much confidence though.
One big issue in Japan since the PS3 era is that Sony completely lost the youth market. Nintendo regained that with the Wii and DS and never let go. Plus with Nintendo’s position of making games for everyone, something Sony did in the ps1 and ps2 days in japan, it has been an easy sale to Japanese audiences. While playstation still has a large audience it’s mainly towards older players, high school, college age and adults. And as we know, gaming for adults in Japan isn’t as wide spread as the west. Yet it’s a market they focus on. Ask many young kids today about playstation and some believe it or not don’t know it well. It’s all about switch to them.
the supply issue is a huge problem here for sure. No supply, no hype. Heck I just saw my first ps5 commercial on Japanese tv this morning! On the news. Nintendo advertises everywhere and on every program. Sony will too eventually but they are keeping too quiet. But yeah next week with New Years is the biggest holiday of the year and no systems for people to buy is not good. The lotteries are just causing more frustration than help for those of us who want one. Not to mention Amazon Japan’s overselling the system giving people like myself an uncertain wait time for when it will arrive.
Maybe by next Christmas Sony will make important changes and all, but for the considerable future in Japan, nintendo is more than king, it’s gaming god.
That's not a good strategy. You hit it when it's hot. Switch will be 4 years on the market next March. You want this high momentum to be your aid when releasing your next console so you're riding high on that wave while also still offering the older consoles. You don't wait for the momentum to drop. With that kind of momentum it's difficult to see them putting out the Switch Pro next year. They have to be making a killing selling this many units at March 2017 launch prices.
My guess is they ride out a small dip in unit sales next year with maybe some discount for the holidays and either launch the Switch Pro in Q1 2022 or wait a bit longer and just put out a backwards compatible Switch 2 for Q4 2023 with plenty of cross-gen games for the first two years.
The fact that they've been able to maintain the same price point for 4 years with no adverse impact whatsoever gives them a lot of flexibility moving forward.
I mean, pandemic and all they still manufactured more ps5 than ps4 globally. The share they allocated to Japan is questionable, but i think they realized that ,unless of drastic changes, their ceiling in Japan is gonna be the same as ps3/ps4.That's indeed fair. Not launching at a later date to avoid stock problems is not telling of much confidence though.
Meanwhile SQE still is still unsure whether to release an exclusive mainline Dragon Quest game on Nintendo Switch or not.
Momotaro Dentetsu will overtakes Dragon Quest 11 on PS4 soon and yet SQE is unable to see the potential that Nintendo Switch could give to Dragon Quest series in Japan and Worldwide.
Exactly on launching later. Launching later for PS4 really was not a great move in Japan. It angered the PlayStation fan base, especially with the excuse that they wanted more Japanese games at launch and didn’t really provide many more games then promised when it finally launched here. I think the fan base here realizes quite well that PlayStation is so big in the west that it needs more supply there, but the numbers that have been allocated here are just too way too small. Just take a look at Japanese twitter and you’ll see so many people frustrated, sad, and angry over the whole situation. Sony needs to do something fast to fix the situation. Sure the pandemic and stock situations around the world make that very hard to do, but every decision being made on Japan and PlayStation now is not good. Shame especially with the popularity of Ghost of Tsushima here helping push the ps brand more recently. The demand exists here but the longer they don’t fulfill it people will just be content with their switch.I mean, pandemic and all they still manufactured more ps5 than ps4 globally. Launching later in the homeland would have been awful pr too for the consumers and local developers. People are already questioning sony's interest in Japan without that, imagine if they did.
Agreed, add me to the frustrated list. I have been applying on Geo since day 1 with no avail.Exactly on launching later. Launching later for PS4 really was not a great move in Japan. Very true. Sony is obviously feeding what stock they can into more important regions. Japan stopped being into home consoles shortly after the PS2 ended it's run. Even the highly popular Wii could only muster 12M there. PS3 did 10M. PS4 might hit 9.5M. I'd imagine PS5 ends up at 8.5M-9.2M. More than double Wii U's paltry 3.3M.To be fair, the console is completely sold out here.
They don`t have enough for now.

Man Rune Factory 5 and the new Story of Seasons next year...The funny thing is that we are heading towards a much stronger 2021, this year both first and third party line-ups were impacted by COVID. I imagine that Rune Factory 5, Bravely Default 2 and Bowser's Fury should have all launched this fall making things very packed. Next year we have a steady schedule of games that will allow Switch to maintain momentum and we might actually finally see Ring Fit achieve it's true potential

Honestly speaking Sony doesn't need to be concentrated on japanese market - they cannot defeat Nintendo there and the presence of Xbox is not existent.I know supply is an issue, but sony clearly has little interest in Japan, they shipped like as little as 1/10th of what they shipped in the US. That's not a display of interest in the region.
JapanThe fuck is a Momotaro Dentetsu

Switch getting DQ12 is guaranteed. Real question is will it be a multiplat on the PS4, or PS5?They're going to repeat the same mistake like what they had done during 3ds era.
Project Octopath Travellers with 2 million units sold on Nintendo Switch alone was a good indicator for them to jump with much better projects on the market leader platform instead of a few AA games like BD2 and Mana Remake.
Gaming devices sell a lot lot less than mobile devices. That would be just as true in Japan as it is in every other country around the world.I wonder how the chart would like if we throw in mobile gaming
Not like this as there were always many different platforms all competing. Now with Sony and Nintendo focusing on one system each. There's only two consoles that can have strong software sales (currently Switch and PS5).I don't think the DS dominated to this extent, did it?
I remember seeing one or two games from other consoles in the Top 10 every week. And then the PSP kinda got a resurgence with the help of Monster Hunter circa 2007..
But the Switch now is just killing it!
This is the first time since NES where the market is too one sided.I don't think the DS dominated to this extent, did it?

Japanese dedicated gaming market is second only to the US. Based on that they're very serious about gaming just not aligned with the west on the yearly COD, Fifa, Madden, NBA, GTA, and Ubisoft games.I wish Japanese consumers took gaming more serious.

PS4 - 1
I think that's the point. PS5 is being treated as the lead platform for SE as a whole and not the Switch.Switch getting DQ12 is guaranteed. Real question is will it be a multiplat on the PS4, or PS5?
Most of what SE puts out from Japan are the small/mid tier stuff, which is all coming to Switch. The future of their franchises are:
DQ - Switch is the home of this franchise. Every game will come to the platform even if it isn't exclusive.
FF - Sony is paying to keep mainline titles and Project Athia on PlayStation. Switch will get ports, remakes and spin offs, as long as Sony doesn't intervene
KH - Tricky one to call but Switch will get spin offs and could get a dedicated game like the 3DS did. I'd expect KH4 to come to the Switch successor, depending on its release date.
Nier - Home of this franchise is PS/XB/PC. I don't expect anything on this to come to Switch. Maybe a late port to the successor.
They still do, but it’s a different type of market for many reasons. Larger older population, one in which most stop playing most games at adult age unlike the west. A strong youth market that’s heavily into Nintendo games. Not to mention Japan still has never really completely recovered from the bubble burst from decades past. But still it’s a huge market here for sure. Different than the west but it’s quite diverse. Heck even pc gaming is very very slowly gaining ground here. It will never reach the consoles but I’m still surprised at its small climbs.I wish Japanese consumers took gaming more serious.

Ill take some of that list over some of the top 5 over there yikes!Japanese dedicated gaming market is second only to the US. Based on that they're very serious about gaming just not aligned with the west on the yearly COD, Fifa, Madden, NBA, GTA, and Ubisoft games.
I for one I'm glad they're the final frontier still standing against the cinematic AAA boreathon walk em up.
From my understanding the only games that Sony has announced for PS5 only are the ones with direct funding from Sony, so that's not too surprising.I think that's the point. PS5 is being treated as the lead platform for SE as a whole and not the Switch.
