Yup. In my opinion, this isn't just a watershed moment for DS game design, but it's also the kick in the ass the Zelda series has needed. Playing this has given me a lot of hope for the actual Wii version of Zelda. All the stuff you do with the map, taking notes, this is where it's at.

How much input did Aonuma have in this game? It seems so different than the console Zeldas. It has a lot of non-game inspired moments which makes me think this was headed by one of the younger guys.

TP was really a big disappointment for me. The main reason was because it was more of the same. This game is so much more creative and fresh.

This is the type of kick in the ass Zelda's needed? I'm sorry, even though this may work, there's nothing about the touch screen controls that seems to add to/improve/rejuvinate the gameplay. Did you play the Wii version of TP? Cause if you did, I'm not sure why you would be disappointed, since it's basically doing the same thing PH is.

*mind explodes*

Are you...are you being serious? There's NOTHING in common with PH and TP.

And obviously you wouldn't know if the touch screen makes the series better. You haven't played it yet, while Kobun and sporsk have.

No.

I was talking about TP taking advantage of the Wii controls, the way PH taken advantage of the DS's touchscreen.

Edit: And I never said it didn't work.

yeah, but TP's wiimote controls consist of aiming a crosshair, fishing, and swinging a sword.

ALL of PH is controlled via the touchscreen.

Actually, I'm sorry to say for those proclaiming this is "revolution", you should play Tingle RPG. It's the perfect blend...it just had bad combat. Much of Tingle RPG is IDENTICAL to Phantom Hourglass, it's just watered down combat and puzzles. But you can control Tingle with the D-pad, but use the stylus for interacting with the world.

While I am having fun with this game and it's different, I'm going to have to say that the all-stylus movement isn't perfect, but again, like TP on Wii, it works. I wish there was an option to play Phantom Hourglass with the D-pad so I could compare. I mean, moving with the stylus so far is more fluid, but less precise. So it's a trade offf. And the issues of trying to move will tapping, ie the stylus affects everything on screen at all times from movement to actions, does cause some frustration here and there. I personally think if this game had Tingle RPG's basic "mechanics" for movement, it would be flawless.

But, it's still too early. Let me beat the game a few times. I'm playing Oracle of Ages and this at the same time, I think that will be a good way to compare the two types of playstyles (somewhat).

The only thing that isn't flawless is the roll. The touchpen movement runs circles (sometimes literally) around analog control. It's just so much more precise.

Whatever. I guess I just can't understand how this so called revolution has more to do with the controls, rather than any actual new gameplay ideas, a la MM.

It has to do with both. I never said it had anything to do with the controls.

Wow, I can't even I contemplated actually skipping this iteration of Zelda. Totally psyched now after the impression and the art in the intro.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I'm glad this turned out so well control-wise, gives me faith for NG: DS as well. Looking forward to playing these games now. :D

you could just wait, buy the game, play it, and find out for yourself.

Okay, my copy is in. I got shit to take care of today, but I'll try and put in some time and give some impressions tonight. It should be interesting, since I'm still one of the naysayers who is cautiously against touchpen only controls. :lol

I'm supposed to wait till later this year for this, I am going to go insane.

Thanks for answering my theme song question, I cant believe this game took it out as well. When I am in the overworld I want the Zelda theme song to play, thats the freaking overworld music, USE IT! Especially in handhelds, every single handheld used the theme for the overworld, now this one is trying to be too much like the console versions. You can play all the original music you want at any other part of the game but the overworld needs the theme song.

/rant.

I'm so ****ing stoked. It'd move up to the top of my "most anticipated DS games" list if it weren't for the fact that the top positions are dominated by the Phoenix Wright franchise by default.

Damn. I really want to play this game right now. (in english)
Of all the games I loved, Zelda is the only one that can make me feel like this...

Video walkthrough of Intro, First Island, Second Island and First Dungeon uploading...probably will only get Intro up tonight.

Recorded on DVC, so it's not lame EMU video of ROM. It will be obvious.

I have impressions written up, but I hate writing impressions of a final product. I'll wait till I write my review to give my final thoughts. I'll keep posting my "notes" every now and then. I don't want to give too much away, but I'll try to get up to the end of dungeon 1 ASAP.

it honestly seems it turned out better than I expected. I'm more willing to play this now. as I expected, the touch screen controls aren't perfect... but I guess it suffices.

I still want a traditional Zelda on the DS, though... :( no I'm not tired of the formula, and I love TP.

To TSA... could you at least tell us if it has anything to do with Phantom Hourglass or not?

Anyone tried multiplayer yet? And easy is it to do the spin attack? Because from what I've seen, the spin attack looks a tad hard to pull of(maybe it just was the guy playing that sucked, I don't know)

Got the game, beat the first
proper
dungeon last night.

Totally, utterly brilliant. Best handheld Zelda by a mile (yes) and far more enjoyable than TP. Wonderful graphics, great gameplay and fantastic use of the DS
and all it's unique abilities
.

This isn't just the shot in the arm the Zelda series needed, it's the shot in the arm gaming needed. Essential.

Had a go on the 'practice' mode, which is just a tutorial really, and it seems fun. Spin attack is easy.

Anyone not picking this up because it's in Japanese needn't worry, if you can get by with missing some of the story the puzzles so far have been straightforward.

Yeah the multiplayer is mmmmmmmm it's interesting. I kinda like it. Doing spin attacks aren't hard.

Just listening to the music in the game...wow. Very, very good use of songs from nearly every title and altering them and incorporating portions into newer pieces.

And wow...I'm hearing some Twilight Princess parts here and there...

I love the themes from Wind Waker. The OST is a must-buy.

What? The OST is out?

Not sure - wishful thinking. I'm downloading that Sendspace link from earlier in the thread, not sure what that is but hopefully legal...

Edit - hmm, not sure what the zip actually is. Looks like songs from other games, unless there's some crazy spoilers in there...

Oh, I see. It seems like the TP soundtrack isn't out either. Not that the music was awesome, but I really liked the
Cowboy theme.

The multiplayer is awesome. Me and a buddy spent about an hour just getting the hang of different strategies against eachother.

It feels damn good sneaking into your buddies base stealing all his Triforce pieces and bringing them back to yours.

I think I've spent more time (about 2-3 hours total) on multiplayer than I have the main game so far.

Right, I've just seen what the multiplayer is based on
within the single player game
. This game just keeps getting better and better. Didn't manage it the first time... :)

Zuh? If your talking about the guy in the northern island on the north map then it's someone completely different.

Ok ok, so the boat parts: you can move freely now right? No more, friggin, changing the directions with the wind wand and stuff?

Reading the impressions has got me psyched. This can be good. Van Johnson good.

Yeh, jusat make a path of where you want to go.

On the way you can bomb, or change camera angle. Also search for treasure underwater. Battleships, octoroks and other things are there to deter you, not too hard though :)

Also, a great lil spoiler for those who liked LttP/Zelda1 enemies... Zora related..
The evil Zoras are back, the one tha shoot fireballs, this time they can go on land and have a sword and shield.

I desperately want to play this, but I need a new DS. I entered a million competitions the other night so I could get hold of one again, and I intend to buy one next month if all goes well.

I hope we hear on Western release dates at E3.

Same here. I never liked handheld games. PH is sounding so awesome. This might be my first import ever. How hard is this game if you don't know Japanese at all?

So I was flipping through the manual and looking at the complete credits to the game. The director Daiki Iwamoto was a programmer on the GBA LttP, cinematic director of OoT and the boss battle director of Four Swords. The sub director Hidemaro Fujibayashi is also director on the GBA LttP, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages and Minish Cap. :D
